The rose bushes were finally in full bloom and were so fascinating on that spring morning. By     1     end of last spring ten bushes had been planted by the couple.

The sight of roses always brings to mind Wanda’s childhood     2     (memorial). The family had no money to buy extra things two     3     (decade) ago, so even a tired rose was something to value. Now they will gather large amounts of roses in their garden.

Currently,     4     (have) a backyard full of different roses is pure enjoyment. And her husband, Dale,     5     occupation was one of the assistants in a government department, takes care of the roses     6     (appropriate). Aware that she loves the very first blooms, he picked some on this particular morning.

But as Dale returned, he came cross a neighbor who had stopped by for a quick visit. Before the woman turned to go, Dale generously gave the roses to her.    7     a glance, she knew the roses were so pretty. And even though their visitor insisted she didn’t want to take them, Dale honestly said that the flowers were for her to keep.

Seeing her precious first blooms go out of the door filled Wanda with regret, and a bit of selflessness. She knew it was “better to give than to receive”. However, what she wished was that she could have kept the roses for herself.

Later that day, the couple headed to the post office, where Wanda waited outside in the car.

Then out of     8     (expect), an older woman suddenly appeared at the open window. At the moment some fresh roses     9     (hold) by her. Then she gave them to her. She said, “These are for you. They’re my first blooms this spring.” The woman’s real motivation was to delight her.

Completely amazed, Wanda thanked the woman and bent for a moment to breathe in the rich fragrance (芳香). By the time she looked back, the mysterious visitor had left.

As far as Wanda was concerned, that special delivery changed her. She drew a conclusion that it made her     10     (convince) that the true meaning of giving others unexpected gifts was deep. Now, she always gives away her first blooms to others, as a reminder that someone is thinking of them.

Wintry Scenes from a Swedish Wonderland

I always give the same advice to ambitious photographers: Wherever home is, that’s where you should begin. Having lived and worked everywhere but in Sweden for most of my life, I was terrible at following it myself. For me, Sweden has always been a place to relax and spend time with family. I’ve never explored it in the same way I’ve explored destinations like Zambia     1     now.

With all of my foreign trips     2     (cancel) this year, I decided to travel north from my home near Stockholm. What began as a two-week trip quickly turned into journeys     3    , both starting and finishing in midwinter, lasted the entire year.

Climate change doesn’t have any impact on the length of our daylight. And yet,     4     (lie) on the back staring up at the magical light show of the aurora borealis (北极光), I hardly minded the lack of daylight. Instead,     5     caught my attention was the fascinating beauty of the white, frozen landscapes and the endless shades of blue.

But Johan Stenevad, my host at Lapland Guesthouse, showed me     6     else. One day, on a snowmobile path lined with tall trees on both sides, he turned off his engine and asked me what I saw. “Trees,” I answered. “A forest.”

He shook his head. “Not a forest, just a plantation. Soon, this is what     7     (leave).” he said. For over half a century now, the ancient forests that once seemed endless continue     8     (cut) down. The Sami that live mainly in the northern areas     9     (face) an existential crisis. Their lives and culture are closely linked to the ancient forests and the reindeer (驯鹿) there. The slow growing lichen (地衣) and mushrooms upon which the reindeer depend for survival are not found in plantations. So, the death of one     10     mean the death of the other, and an uncertain future for an entire people.

We are not visitors in nature and it’s essential for our own survival as well as that of the natural world.

Dear Easy,

I wouldn’t put too much stock in what your “literary” friends say; they sound like bores. When it comes down to it, people who think about reading in terms of what “counts” don’t seem to actually enjoy books all that much. Their moralistic (说教的) gloom is evident in the extent     1     reading has come to resemble exercise, with readers tracking their word-count metrics, trying to improve their speed.

2     some disciples of this culture are quick to dismiss audiobooks as a shortcut, they cannot seem to agree on why, exactly, listening is an inferior form of engagement. Some cite studies that have shown people who listen to books retain less than those who read them, which     3     (bind) up with how tempting it is to do other things while listening.     4     insist that audiobooks eliminate the reader’s responsibility to interpret things like irony, tone, and inflection, given that the person on the recording is doing the work of conveying the emotions in the book for them.

The larger problem, however, is in viewing books as     5     means to some other end. Many people who aspire to read more are motivated by the promise that doing so will prevent cognitive decline, improve brain connectivity. Some assume that the purpose of reading is     6     (absorb) knowledge or nuggets of trivia that one can use in order to demonstrate being “well read”. I’d be willing to bet, Easy Listening, that your earliest experiences with the joy of literature were aural. Most of us were read to by adults before we learned to read ourselves, and listening to audiobooks recalls the distinctive delight of     7     (tell) a story.

If you’re like most people I know, you probably find it difficult to recall the last time a book regardless of     8     you consumed it — succeeded in altering your consciousness, suggesting that many books you’ve encountered have failed to live up to their potential.

My advice, Easy, is to be     9     (discriminating) about the medium and more choosy about the books you pick up. If you find that your mind is wandering or that you’re not able to fully enter into the reality of the narrative,     10     (consider) that this might be a problem with the content, not the mechanism through which you are experiencing it.

Faithfully,

Cloud

Can you remember an experience when a mistake helped you to understand an idea or a skill? For me, it was sailing. I took a sailing class in a high school. No matter how many times I read the     1     (explain ), I could not understand the difference between a “tack” and a “jibe” — two     2    (method) of turning a boat — one much     3     (safe) than the other. Later, while we were sailing, a heavy wind     4     (come) up. We needed to head back. I called out the warning “hard alee”.     5     I realized my mistake, it was too late. I had pushed the boat in the wrong direction. Luckily, no one was hurt. Only after this experience did I     6     (clear) understand the sailing phrase “turning on the wind” that I     7     (read) so many times in the textbook. I never confused a jibe with a tack again! I often share this story     8     my students after telling them they have made     9     serious mistake. I hope they know I learned something important by     10     (make) that mistake many years ago.
