When my family moved to the United States from Colombia, I was 9 years old and knew little about English. As time passed, teachers finally knew all of their students and slowly everyone began to adapt to the life, except for me. No one called out my name, and no one seemed to know I existed. I spent the next month in my new classroom quietly. I felt that fear, loneliness and sadness came over me.

The school never cared that I didn't speak English, but something else was teaching me English. Every morning when my aunt drove me to school and picked me up, she always had 106. 7 Light FM (私家车广播) on. It was this station that introduced my young ears to the English sounds.

Because of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, I learned the difference between “witch” and “which”. While watching the TV show South Park, I was attracted by the funny characters. In fact, thanks to pop culture, the world of English became available to me while it was being turned down at school.

I also learned how to express my emotions thanks to pop culture. One day at school, we were taking a math quiz and the whole class was quiet. Suddenly, the tip of my pencil broke and I yelled, “My Jesus!” Everyone held their breath in surprise and I laughed to myself because something at that moment told me I had just learned my first bad word in English.

Paragraph 1:

I appeared to be embarrassed at that moment, but in my heart I felt happy.

【推荐2】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

When she was 22 years old, Pat Jones decided to travel around the world and see as many foreign places as she could when she was young. When she finished college at home in Britain, Pat chose to visit Latin America first. She managed to get a job as an English teacher in a secondary school in Bolivia. Pat spoke a little Spanish, so she was able to communicate with her students even though they did not know much English.

A sentence she had once read somewhere stuck in her mind: if you dream in a foreign language, it means that you have really mastered it. Pat repeated this sentence to her students and she hoped that someday she would dream in Spanish and they would dream in English.

One day, Tim, one of the worst students in her class, came up to her and explained in Spanish that he had not done his homework. He said that he had gone to bed early, but slept badly. Pat was quite angry with him, for she did not think that his explanation had anything to do with his homework. But Tim told her that he dreamed all night and his dream was in English.

“In English!” Pat thought. She was greatly surprised, since Tim was such a bad student. She was also jealous (嫉妒的). Her dreams were still not in Spanish, but she decided to encourage her students and asked him to tell her about his dream.

“All the people in my dream spoke English,” Tim said. “And all the signs were in English. All the newspapers, magazines and TV programs were in English, too.”

“But that’s wonderful,” said Pat. “What did all the people say to you?” she asked.

“I’m sorry, Miss Jones. That’s why I slept so badly all night. I didn’t understand a word they said. It is a nightmare (噩梦)!” Tim answered.

【推荐3】阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I’m an English self-learner, but English is not my first language. Today I am an English teacher. I would like to say that failures are not disastrous. Have faith, keep moving on, and never give up hope, and you will see your hard work pay off.

I was a slow learner when I was little. Before five, I couldn’t even speak in full sentences. Unlike most other children, I seldom interacted with others; I neither cried nor threw tantrums. My extreme quietness made my parents wonder if I was mentally slow, but they were not sure. Actually, I have to confess that my memories of my early childhood are quite unclear.

My learning problems were the result of my mother taking some medicine when she became pregnant with me. Although I was born without any physical defects (缺陷), the medicine did affect my early intellectual development. When I was in elementary school, I learned very slowly and was as quiet as a doll. While my teacher was teaching, my mind often wandered outside the classroom to the playground. As a fifth grader, I finally started interacting with my classmates. That was the first time in my memory that I had some friends.

After heading at full speed for my junior high education, my learning situation got stuck in the mud again. In my country, students entering junior high school had to take an IQ test. It was a test for schools to evaluate students’ learning abilities so that they could arrange them into different levels of classes based on their IQ test scores. I was placed in the “bottom class” as a result of my below-average IQ score. Most of my teachers taught us using easy and slow methods because they considered us incapable of learning much. However, I never wanted to lose faith that I might one day succeed. To prove that when God closes a door, He will definitely open up a big window, a miracle occurred. That’s when I discovered a strong passion for English.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
