One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea; the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year,I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn't break it open until I could afford my dream bike.
Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, "This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up." When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens,I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn't break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

Ninny grew up with her grandparents. Her grandmother worked as a housekeeper, and her grandfather was too weak to move. In his wheelchair, Grandfather told her stories about flowers, princesses and sunrises. Those stories always ended with the same message: A simple act of kindness creates an endless ripple (涟漪) that comes back to you.
One day, Ninny was at the supermarket with her grandmother. They only bought the bare minimum. “Oh!” Ninny jumped when she spotted a chocolate cake. She pulled her grandmother’s sleeve. “Grandfather’s birthday is around the corner! Can we please, please, please have it?” The old lady eyed the chocolate cake. There were beautiful decorations on the top with fancy designs on the side. Picking up the cake, Grandmother took a close look at the price and sighed, “Ninny, we can’t afford it. It’s $40!”
Ninny pouted (噘嘴), trying to convince her grandmother. Yet she knew that her grandmother would not bend, even if she begged with her puppy eyes. No matter what, money did not grow on trees. Ninny sighed and turned around. Grandmother gave her a sad smile and turned towards the cashier.
Almost out of nowhere, a man with a 50 dollar bill and the chocolate cake approached her and handed these things to Ninny. “Have them, dear.”
Ninny took a closer look at the man. He was average. Average face, average clothes, and average everything. He was just a random man.
The man bent down and maintained eye contact with Ninny. “Do you know why I’m giving you these?” Ninny shook her head. “When I was a little boy, a man bought me a chocolate cake. He just overheard a conversation I had with my mother. Nothing else. He gave me some money and a small slip of paper. Then he left.” The man reached into his pocket and took out a dog-eared piece of paper. Looking at the words written, Ninny wore a smile on her face, for she was so familiar with the message.

Some people think of the future literally like the next day. To others, it means the unknown. To me, it signifies hope.
Every day, on the way to and from school I pass by a children’s hospital. One morning, as I was hurrying to school, I noticed a child staring out of a small window on the first floor. The next minute I tripped (绊倒) and sprawled on the ground. As I slowly pulled myself up and dusted myself off, I looked up again and saw the child laughing. In spite of my situation, I was pleased to have made someone laugh. I bowed as though I were a performer. The child clapped and waved at me. As I stepped closer, I saw that the girl’s head was bald, a sign that she was a cancer patient. I quickly waved one last time to her before heading for the school
The next morning and the next, I looked out for the little girl and waved to her, doing a little jig just to make her laugh. I thought about her and wondered what her life must be like. Was that how the child lived from day to day?
I felt the urge to visit the child. I went to the hospital and looked for the room facing the road. I found the little girl. She was thin and pale. When she saw me, her eyes widened with recognition and she welcomed me with a shy smile. I talked to her a bit and learned her name, Suki. The nurse who saw me talking to her later told me that Suki was a leukemia patient. Her mother died two years ago and her father was now on duty outside the country. The nurse encouraged me to visit Suki so that she would not be so lonesome. As I was leaving, Suki called to me, “Tomorrow?” I understood and said,
“Yes, tomorrow.”

It was the homecoming parade in Rockwall, Texas and cheerleader Tyra was riding atop one of the school’s floats(彩车) in her cheerleading uniform. As it slowly made its way down the avenue, the 17-year-old enthusiastically waved at the crowd, all the while soaked in the music, laughter, and applause. An expression of intense joy illuminated Tyra’s eyes. She was a fine, tall, and slim beauty, with blue eyes and dark hair. The atmosphere in the street was electric as everyone enjoyed the parade.
All of a sudden, a horrific scream shattered the joyous atmosphere. Tyra looked down and saw a two-year-old on the sidewalk gasping for air. His nose was short and broad, while his nostrils flared like those of a lion. His frantic(情绪失控的) mother pleaded with the gathered crowds for help. She was trembling helplessly as she stood over him.The boy, Clarke, was sucking on a piece of candy when it slid down the back of his mouth. It had lodged in his throat and blocked the windpipe(气管).
“Someone helps me;someone helps me,” the boy’s mum Nicole kept begging. People stood in shock, and Nicole could not understand why nobody would help them. She was becoming more and more panicky and tears streamed down her face. The boy was no longer coughing. He lay on the ground in despair as he gasped for breath, but no matter how hard he tried, no air was reaching his lungs. No one seemed to know how to help except Tyra.
Tyra was a senior with dreams of becoming a pediatric surgeon. To show prospective universities how dedicated she was to her career goals, she had taken a first aid course and learned the Heimlich maneuver(海姆立克急救法) and CPR. Now it looked as if those lessons were going to be used a lot sooner than she had expected. Knowing that every second would count, she leaped off the moving float and ran to the child.

During breakfast, Alan suggested going to the Lego Land to have fun and his mom agreed.
“We’ll stop by the supermarket and buy some snacks and fruits. Now hurry and eat and then we’ll go. It’s going to be a lovely day. Grandma is coming with us. She’ll be here any minute.”
Alan ate his breakfast and then ran into his room to get his shoes. The problem was that he could only find one of them. He looked under his bed, but all he could see were dirty pants. He moved some of his toys out of the way, but still couldn’t find his shoe. After he had checked everywhere in his room, he ran into the kitchen. “Mom, I can’t find my shoe. Will you wait while I look for it?” he asked.
His mom thought about how many times she’d told Alan to clean his room up. She said something to Alan’s grandma in a low voice. Then, she said to Alan,“You will have to stay home. Your dad and I will take your brother Alex to the Lego Land. Grandma will stay at home with you.”
“No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the Lego Land,” Alan cried. “I’m sorry, Alan. I’ve told you a dozen times to clean your room and you did not do it. You can’t find your shoe now. It’s your own fault for not cleaning your room. You will stay home.”
Alan ran into his bedroom, crying. His mom came to the door and said, “Alan, clean that room of yours before I get home. I’ve told Grandma not to give you any sweets until you make your room clean and tidy.” She went out with Alex and the brothers’ dad. After a minute, they drove away.

A Gift I Treasure
It was just a week before my seventeenth birthday. Party preparations had started. My family never celebrated birthdays on such a grand scale. However, this was a double celebration. I had a passed A level examination with flying colors and my parents thought this was an occasion to celebrate.
The whole house was full of activities. Complete cleaning had started a week before. There was a continuous work in and out as everyone went about doing their share of the work. Mama, who was the chief event organizer, was busy planning the budget and the menu. Papa was in charge of paying for the different purchases. My siblings (兄弟姐妹) were busy sending out the invitations. Even Grandpa, who enjoys watching his favorite Cable TV from the comfort of his armchair, did not want to be left out. He made numerous trips to town to run errands (跑腿) for Mama.
Grandpa and I shared a special bond. Perhaps it was because I was his oldest grandchild. He was always there for me and he would offer me his shoulder to cry on whenever I was depressed. He seemed to be the happiest man to celebrate my birthday and he even secretly whispered to my ear that he was going to give me a great gift on that day.
Two days before my birthday, Grandpa complained of chest pains. We rushed him to the hospital but he refused to be admitted. He was given a lot of medicine instead. When he came home, he remained in his room. Whenever I went into his room, he managed a smile. I could see that he was very tired. The corners of his mouth and eyes had numerous wrinkles while the skin on his skinny limbs had shriveled. I felt a stab of pain in my heart each time I saw him.

When Canadian couple Edith Lemay and Sebastien Pelletier first noticed that their daughter Mia was having visual problems, she was just three years old.
A few years after they first took her to see a specialist, Mia was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (视网膜色素变性), a rare genetic disease that caused a loss or decline in vision over time. There’s nothing they could really do, because there was currently no cure or effective treatment to slow down the progression of retinitis pigmentosa.
Once they came to terms with the news, the couple focused their attention on helping their child to build the skills that she’d need to lead her way through life. When Mia’s specialist suggested that they should assist her with “visual memories”, Lemay realized that there was one truly incredible way that they could do just that for her.
“I thought, ‘I’m not going to show her an elephant in a book. I’m going to take her to see a real elephant,’” she explains. “And I’m going to fill her visual memory with the best, most beautiful images I can.”
She and her husband soon began making plans to spend a year traveling around the globe with their kid. They thought there were great things to do at home, but there’s nothing better than traveling where they could feast their eyes on the wonderful scenery.
After gathering up enough savings, they soon began their family journey with an in-depth itinerary (行程) that involved traveling to lots of places all over the world.
