A Hole in the Fence
In a small village, a little boy lived with his father and mother. He was the only son of the family, so his parents, especially his mother spoiled him very much. Gradually, the boy got angry easily and teased others with his words. He scolded kids, neighbors and even his friends due to anger. His friends and neighbors avoided him, for which his parents were very worried and depressed.
His parents advised him many times to control his anger and develop kindness. Unfortunately, all their attempts failed. Finally, the boy’s father came up with an idea.
One day, his father gave him a huge bag of nails. He asked his son to hammer one nail to the fence every time he became angry. The little boy found it amusing, so he agreed to do what his father said.
The first day the boy hammered 38 nails into the fence. Then it began to become less. He found it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.
Gradually, the number of nails hammered to the fence was reduced and the day arrived when no nail was hammered! Yes, the boy did not lose his temper at all that day. For the next several days, he did not lose his temper, and he did not hammer any nail.

“I figured, if it can float on the water, it can slide on the ice,” Gelinne says. The kayaks’ paddles (桨) proved easily broken, so the pair tried using shovels (铁铲) to push the boats along. Their first attempts left them moving in circles. But with some muscle, they made progress.

It was a great pity when one day I heard that the Sunshine Bookstore was closing after fifty years of business. I was also heartbroken. The bookstore was a place where anyone in the neighborhood could drop by (顺便拜访) and be connected through their love of books.

Its old brick outside hadn’t changed, but inside it was like a different world. Clearly, the Sunshine Bookstore was in good and creative hands.

Seeing my nervousness, my parents told me to sit up, and to take deep breaths to keep calm, which worked. However, the peace was short-lived. Almost immediately, my name was called, signaling my turn had come. I pretended to be deaf but my mother gestured at me to stand up. I forced myself to step forward and tripped over a toy left lying around by some kid. My clumsiness (笨拙) got me the attention of everyone in the room.
I had refused my parents’ offer to accompany me. I meant to show them that I was brave enough to face the difficulty on my own. Thankfully, I forgot my anxiety as I looked around the dentist’s room. I didn’t look at my dentist in the eye as I took my place on the chair nervously. The dentist spoke in a relaxing voice behind her mask. Everything was going smoothly and I was quite proud of myself. Then something went wrong. I was picking up the cup of water placed next to the chair for patients to rinse (冲洗) their mouths when I caught sight of the dental drill. Panic related to a bad childhood experience involving the drill kicked into me, and I spat out the rinsing water, right into the surprised dentist’s face.

Jill didn't feel special at having lots of friends. Kathy was the one in the class who seemed to do that much better than anyone else and Jill wished she could be more like Kathy. Kathy was always laughing and joking and telling stories. Everyone wanted to be her friend. Jill was not without friends. It was just that she didn't get invited to every birthday party like Kathy did. So when some kids were asked, and she was not, she felt decidedly unhappy.
One afternoon after school, Jill walked past Emma, who was desperately pulling all the contents out of her bag. “What's the matter?” asked Jill. “I lost my math homework sheet,” said Emma, “and it's due tomorrow, I don't know what to do.” Jill said, “You can come to my home and we can do it together.” When they had completed their math assignment, Emma expressed her thanks to Jill. Jill felt a tiny feeling of being special for helping someone she admired. Before leaving, Emma said to Jill, “You know, it's hard always being at the top of the class; your parents and teachers expect so much of you. I often wish I was like you and didn't have all these pressures.”
