In the farmers' market, there were many other stalls (摊位) with all kinds of food for sale as well as colourful rows of fruit and vegetables set out on tables. Cooked food stalls filled the air with the wonderful smells of hot tasty snacks, and the smell of fresh coffee was everywhere.
"Wow," Gus cried out, "Jam (果酱)!"
Just in front of him, there was a jam stall that sold all kinds of home-made jam. But the only kind Gus wanted was strawberry, so he bought a jar. He couldn't help but taste the jam immediately. It was OK, he frowned (皱眉) and shook his head, but never as good as Rose's, whose jam was just magic.
Rose was his neighbour, an elderly lady who lived alone but liked company now and again. Her doorbell was usually too quiet before Gus and his mom moved to the village after his father's death. Gus often rang her doorbell and asked whether she needed anything from the supermarket as he and his mother were going to town. In return, Rose would often give Gus a jar of jam. Gus was amazed how jam could be so delicious, so whenever free he would be at Rose's home watching her make the super jam.
Suddenly, an idea struck Gus. Probably he could try that to make some money and help his mum. He then bought a bag of potatoes for Rose for her kind offer of wonderful jam.

“See you at Open House (学校开放日) tonight, Amy,” Evelyn shouted from the school bus window. “Don’t forget to ask your mom if I can come over tomorrow!” “OK!” I called back. I wished I could feel excited about my first Open House at my new school, but I was worried. What would other kids say when they found out my parents can’t hear?
And I wanted Evelyn to visit, but then she’d see how different my house was. My parents use a video phone so they can use sign language to communicate with callers. We also have a light on the wall that flashes when the phone or doorbell rings. Would Evelyn think my house was strange?
That night, Dad drove us to the brightly lit school. We stopped in front of the bulletin board in the hall. “Look at Amy’s picture!” Mom said, too loud! She does that when she’s excited, because she can’t hear herself. Some older kids turned to stare at us and I wanted to hide.
I led my family into my classroom and looked around. Evelyn was not there yet. Ms. Jennings walked over to us. I introduced her to my family and explained that my parents are deaf. “Oh,” she said. “Well, how do you say welcome in sign language?” “Like this.” I swept my open right hand in toward my body, palm up. She repeated the motion. “Thank you,” Mom said, smiling. “Nice to meet you.” Ms. Jennings looked surprised. “You speak very well,” she said. In sign language, I repeated what Ms. Jennings had said in case my parents hadn’t read her lips.
“Was it difficult teaching Amy to talk?” Ms. Jennings asked. “Not really,” Dad said in sign language, and I translated so Ms. Jennings understood. “She went to daycare with other hearing kids.”
Some of my classmates were watching us and whispering. Then I noticed Evelyn and her mom standing by the door. “Hi, Amy,” Evelyn waved to me and approached us. “I didn’t know your parents are deaf.”

I handed the card from my school's help-wanted board to the man behind the counter of Mort's Deli (熟食店). Even before I opened my mouth, he was shaking his head.
It was September 1957, and my family had just arrived in California. My father only got work two or three days a week. Our poor savings were gone, and as the eldest boy of the family, I was the only one able to help.
''Let me work the rest of the week, and if you don’t like the way I do the job, don't pay me,'' I said. The tall man stared at me, and then nodded, ''I'm Mort Robin. What's your name?''
At Mort's, I worked very hard. Near the end of the day he called me up to him. ''How much did that card at school say this job paid?'' he asked. ''One dollar an hour,'' I whispered. Actually I was willing to take less.
''That's not enough for someone who works as hard as you,'' Mort said. ''You start at 1.25.'' Over the next few weeks, I learned a lot about Mort. A few years older than my dad, he was from Chicago and had a daughter at my age. When things were slow, he often shared stories from his army days. Our store was closed on Sundays, so every Saturday evening Mort urged me to take home the leftover soup. It was a meal in itself, a treat for my struggling family.
One Saturday after work, I was about to step in my house when I saw a large bald man in my father's chair. He was shouting at my father. I quietly walked into the kitchen and listened through the door. The man wanted to take our car. I had been in Los Angeles just long enough to understand how essential a car was. Dad offered to make the three payments that were due, but the man demanded the entire sum - $325, or the car.
I slipped out of the door, thinking: Who might have $325? Who would even consider lending me so much money?

The only person I could think of was Mort.

On a sunny afternoon, my friend Ollie and I were enjoying skatcboarding at our local park. Our mood was light until Olle spotted a poster for the upcoming Harvest Fair. The idea of attending it was thrilling, but the ticket price of $50 quickly iced our enthusiasm.
While we were thinking over the cost, our attention was drawn to the list of attractions. Among the various activities, we noticed that our favorite band - Eagles was going to perform. We couldn’t help but break into singing our favorite song by them. What added to our excitement was the pie contest in the poster, a delightful reminder of our shared memory. It used to be the most popular event in our community. But thinking of the expensive tickets, which seemed to be a shadow over our excitement, we all sighed. Then I suggested going to my parents’ store to see if they could help.
Upon arriving, my dad told us he had some good news, showing some tickets to us. They were the very ones we had seen in the poster! My dad explained that his old partner had made a request to hang a poster here for the Harvest Fair, and in return, he offered us free passes. Much to my delight, there were six tickets for five people in our family and an extra one for my friend! The news was like a breath of fresh air, bringing unexpected joy into our day. We could all set out to experience the fair together, no one missing out.
Just then, Mrs. Smith, out awesome 80-year-old neighbor, walked unsteadily towards us.“I just saw the poster in your window. How I used to love going to fairs!” She paused, with her eyes dropping before she continued. “But it’s hard for me to get around now, and tickets cost so much these days...”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________One day last June, I picked my son up from afterschool care to take him to the second of his twice-weekly boxing classes. He was tired and hungry and didn’t feel like going. “Can you drive me to the dam (大坝), Mom? I want to find something fun there,” he begged. The Colliery Dam is a pleasant attraction in our town. Beautiful big trees with birds calling, a freshwater reservoir (水库) filled with fish, and acres of paths to wander. But I insisted I had decided that it was important that he finish what he started, and that it was equally important to teach him that sometimes we have to do things even when we don’t feel like it.
Effectively, I was ignoring an eight-year-old’s request for some rest. He went to school five days a week, as well as before and afterschool care; he had a tutor once a week, two boxing classes and gymnastics on the weekend. However, I felt it justified in that he’s a very active boy and needs ways to get out all his energy.
But on this particular day, he was not going to let me ignore his feelings, however hard I tried. He even declared that he would never go to the boring boxing classes and instead take the painting courses he had been longing for. As usual, I rejected, claiming that’s an activity for girls. As we got in the hot car for a 15-minute drive to boxing, he returned to a three-year-old--he screamed and cried and kicked my seat.
We pulled into the parking lot, both of us worn out, annoyed and angry. My son took off his seat belt and curled (蜷缩) into a ball on the floor. What was I doing? Why was I so determined that he go to boxing? Was I worried that his absence would reflect badly on me as a parent somehow? Wouldn’t it actually teach him that I heard he was tired and hungry and needed a break and that it was just as well that boys took painting classes? “Put on your seat belt,” I said. “We’re going to the dam.”

A girl went to her mother and told her mother about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed that as one problem was solved, a new one arose.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots (锅) with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the water came to the boil. She placed carrots into the first pot. Then she placed eggs into the second pot. Finally, she placed ground coffee beans into the last pot. She let them boil without saying a word.
In about twenty minutes, she turned off the burners. She took the carrots, the eggs and the coffee out with a scoop and placed each of them in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, the mother asked, “Tell me, what do you see?” “Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” the young woman replied. The mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked her to drink the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted it.
The daughter then asked, “What does it mean, Mom?” Her mother explained that these objects had faced the same adversity (逆境) —boiling water, but they reacted differently. The carrots had been hard. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, they softened and became weak. The eggs had been weak. Their thin outer shells had protected their liquid interior (内部). But after sitting through the boiling water, their inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water. “Which are you?” the mother asked her daughter.
