I threw the newspaper away and rushed to the scene. My only daughter looked frightened. Tears were welling up in her eyes. I cleared my throat, and picked up the bowl. “Dina, why don’t you take a few mouthfuls? Just for Dad’s sake, dear.” Dina softened a bit, and wiped her tears with the back of her hands. “OK, Dad. I will eat not just a few mouthfuls, but the whole lot. But, you should. She hesitated. “Dad, if I eat this entire curd rice, will you give me whatever I ask for?” “Oh sure, darling,” I replied. “Promise.”
My girl stared at her mom and continued, “Ask Mom also to give a promise.” My wife put her hand on Dina’s and said, “Promise.”
“Dear, you still want a new computer? Dad doesn’t have that kind of money right now. OK?”I became a bit anxious.
“No, Dad. I don’t want anything expensive,” Slowly and painfully, she finished eating the rice. Dina came to me with her eyes wide with expectation. All our attention was on her. She demanded, “Dad, I want to have my head shaved off this Sunday!” My wife shouted, “A girl having her head shaved off? Impossible!”
“Dina, can you ask for something else? Seeing you with a clean-shaven head, we’ll be sad,” I said. But Dina said, “No, Dad. I don’t want anything else. You promised to reward me with whatever I ask for. Now, you are going back on your words. Was it not you who told me the story of King Harishchandra, and its moral that we should honor our promises no matter what?” Dina was in tears.
It was time for me to call the shots for our promise must be kept.

I have to admit the examples from his youth fascinated me. He specialized in his adventures growing up in Omaha in the early 1900s. His brothers threw him into a lake to teach him to swim. When my Monday came, I took a bus to the TV station with my Dad. I checked in at the desk. The host of Talent Sprouts, and the musical director welcomed the participants and described the routine for us. Everything was fresh there. Sweat poured down Marquez’s face. He was preparing for a basketball game and he would win. That was a pretty sure thing. After all, he wasn’t just good; he was excellent.
Basketball was a way of life in Marquez’s family. His older brother Reggie was now playing at a top college. Marquez was ready to follow in his brother’s footsteps and make his family proud. But he had a secret. As good as he was at basketball, Marquez’s heart wasn’t in it anymore. He had another sport on his mind.
Wiping the sweat from his forehead (额头), Marquez jumped on a bus heading home. Through the bus window, he could see cheerleaders dancing and performing amazingly on the field. Marquez was attracted. Every year, she takes this money and puts it toward something — a cause, an act of kindness, anything that can help someone. Sometimes, she buys coffee for the next people in line at a coffee shop. Other times, she buys something for an organization that needs it.
If you ask her about this tradition, she will tell you that she is carrying on something that her mother used to do around the holidays. If you ask anyone else who knows her, however, they will tell you that she has a huge heart. She manages to get our whole family involved in this movement every year.
Last year, for example, my younger brother Bob and I volunteered in a shelter for the homeless. Once, when we helped with delivering daily supplies there, he noticed the wish list on the wall: comforters, a DVD player, a coffee maker and supplies. We told Mum, and she quickly organized a family meeting to discuss how to help the shelter. We all agreed that the coffee maker would be the best thing for our family to work on together. We found a coffee maker online and decided to buy one.
Bob opened “The Charity Jar” and we counted the money Mum collected. Unfortunately, it was 50 dollars short. “Any way to make it up?” Mum asked me and Bob.

He found they had a lot in common. They were both athletic and practically the same age. Another thing he learned about James: His grave site (墓地) was in Jacksonville—the other side of the country.
