Pedigree Matters Less

The Exciting Offer, a reality show     1     is now well into its second season, has gained in popularity recently because it vividly portrays     2     new college graduates compete for their dream job.

Two participants in particular have attracted a great deal of attention: Wang Xiao, who graduated with a master’s degree in law from Stanford University, and Ding Hui, who     3    (not start) his law studies East China University of Political Science and Law until he turned 25.

Many Viewers imagined that Wang     4     (have) a big advantage over his opponents because of his outstanding educational qualifications. However, Wang turned out to be impatient with his fellow interns, often     5     (interrupt) them when they were sharing their opinions. Ding, on the other hand, presented determination and the attitude of a life-long learner.

You     6     be wondering, “Shouldn’t the student at the ‘better’ university automatically be the better learner and the better intern?”

Well, I hate to rain on your parade (泼冷水),    7     being able to go to a top university is nothing more than a testament to one’s hard work at a certain stage in his or her life. It does not automatically transform them into a better, smarter person     8     their making continuous efforts. Even top university graduates should always keep on working instead of resting on their laurels (不思进取).

More importantly, no amount of prestige can make up for being an arrogant know-it-all.     9    , many Harvard or Peking University degrees you hold, if you do not have regard     10     other people, you won’t earn respect from them in return.

In a word, respect is earned by becoming a worthy role model for others rather than through an excellent pedigree (历史).

In May, ByteDance, the world’s most valuable start-up, leapt further ahead of other technology “unicorns”. The reason? TikTok, a short-video app that has been downloaded 2 billion times. The “last sunny corner” of the Internet,    1    it is known thanks to jolly user-generated(用户生成的) content, is China’s first worldwide Internet sensation(轰动事物). For ByteDance’s 37-year-old    2    (found),Zhang Yiming, it is part of an ambition    3    (build)a global software giant. Now that ambition is in jeopardy(危机). On June 29th India    4    (ban) TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps. America is now threatening to ban the app altogether.

TikTok has an estimated 70m American users, in the same league as Snapchat. “TikTok is a place for everyone now,” says Vanessa Pappas, the app’s general manager for America. To TikTok’s users the idea of Uncle Sam    5    (crack) down on videos of baby hedgehogs is as silly as grandpas learning to shuffle. The Trump Administration has two concerns. The first is over censorship(审查制度) and propaganda(宣传). The second worry is that as a Chinese firm, ByteDance is subject to laws that require it to work with China’s authorities.

What ByteDance fears most is a    6    (force)sale of 90-100% of global TikTok to American investors or a tech giant. However, letting go of some or all of TikTok would be a    7    (finance) blow to ByteDance. Without TikTok America its potential value would fall from $500 billion to perhaps $300 billion. Losing TikTok globally would be    8    (painful) still. A split could also stunt(扼杀) the future development of the app,    9    popularity has been fuelled by ByteDance’s algorithms, honed(进化) in developing Douyin and Toutiao.

TikTok’s woes(麻烦) offer others an opening. In India,    10    200 million users lost access to it overnight, a local rival, Roposo, got 22 million sign-ups in 48 hours. In America Facebook is about to launch Instagram “Reels”, a TikTok clone, and YouTube will soon roll out “Shorts”.
