Tianwen-1 Probe Enters Orbit Around Mars

After nearly seven months in space, China’s Tianwen-1 probe successfully entered the orbit around Mars on February 10. It marks the first time that a Chinese spacecraft     1    (orbit) an extraterrestrial planet, according to the China National Space Administration(国家航天局) .

Tianwen-1     2    (consist) of an orbiter, a lander and a six-wheeled rover carrying scientific instruments. A 3,000-newton engine was fired up at 7:52 p.m. to decelerate the spacecraft. After some 15 minutes, precise braking near Mars helped the probe succeed in     3    (enter) the orbit around the Red Planet. That means Tianwen-1 has become China’s first artificial satellite of Mars and achieved the first goal of its three-step mission - orbiting, landing and roving.

Tianwen-1 makes China the sixth country to ever reach Mars. It     4    (launch) by a Long March-5 carrier rocket, China’s largest launch vehicle, on Jul 23, 2020. The probe has flown 475 million kilometers and was 192 million kilometers away from Earth when it reached the Mars orbit.

Tianwen-1 will now conduct several orbital corrections     5    (enter) a temporary Mars “parking” orbit,     6    (look) for potential landing sites in preparation for a “touch-down” in May or June. The most challenging part of the mission will be the soft landing, an independent process for the probe lasting seven to eight minutes.

Chinese space engineers and scientists have chosen a relatively flat region in the southern part of the Utopia Planitia(乌托邦平原) , the largest plain on Mars,     7     the potential landing zone. The sites was selected for its conditions for a safe landing and scientific value. It has not been investigated by other countries yet.     8     the scientific data can be shared with the international community to enrich the knowledge of the Red Planet.

After the landing, the rover will be set free to conduct scientific exploration and it has an expected lifespan(使用期限) of at least 90 Martian days (about three months on Earth). The orbiter, with a design lifespan of one Martian year (about 687 days on Earth), will relay(接转) communications to and from the rover while carrying out its own scientific detection work,     9     China can succeed in orbiting, landing and roving with Tianwen-1, it will take further challenges on the next Mars mission: collecting and bringing back samples from the surface.

Tianwen-1 means “Questions to Heaven” and comes form a poem written by Qu Yuan, one of     10    (great) poets of ancient China. The name signifies the Chinese nation’s perseverance in pursuing truth and science and exploring nature and the universe.

Chinese astronauts successfully carried out the country’s first spacewalk outside their space station—an    1    (importance) milestone in its rapidly expanding space program.

The spacewalk is only the second by Chinese astronauts since the Shenzhou 7 manned mission (任务)of 2008,     2    was conducted outside a spacecraft.

China launched three astronauts into space    3    June. On Sunday morning, two of    4    (they)left the core module (核心舱)of the space station called Tiangong. During    5    spacewalk, they tested new-generation spacesuits, fit equipment, and tested the station’s robotic arm.

According to the plan, there will be another spacewalk during the astronauts’ orbital flight, which, lasting three    6     (month), will be China’s longest crewed mission.

As part of its plans to have a fully crewed space station by December 2022, China    7    (launch) the first core module, known as Tianhe or Harmony of the Heavens, on April 29. The module is the    8    (large) spacecraft developed by China to date, with a total length of 16.6 meters and a living space of 50 cubic meters.

While China is not considering foreign participation in the space station’s    9    (develop)now, non-Chinese astronauts will certainly    10    (welcome) in the years to come.

The three Chinese astronauts living in space for 90 days have returned to Earth,     1     (mark) an end to China’s longest-ever crewed mission.

The astronauts—Nie Haisheng, Liu Borning and Tang Hongbo—     2     (send) in June to the core module (舱) of China’s planned space station, called Tiangong or Heavenly Palace, which is still     3       construction in a low-Earth orbit.

The crew boarded the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft on Thursday and touched down at the Gobi desert in Inner Mongolia on Friday afternoon, state news agency Xinhua reported.

During their three months at     4     space station, the astronauts conducted two spacewalks to test their     5    (equip), new-generation spacesuits and life maintenance systems. Their mission is a major step in China’s plan     6    (complete) the space station by December 2022,     7     it’s expected to be fully crewed and operational

Before then, China plans to send three more manned spacecraft and two laboratory modules to the space station.

It’s an     8     (ambition) target for China’s rapidly expanding space program, which has received     9    (billion) of dollars in government investment and achieved a series of other milestones in recent years - including landing a lunar probe in a     10     (previous) unexplored area of the moon last December, and landing a rover on Mars in May.

On May 15th, China landed its Mars probe,Tianwen-1, on the red planet,     1     (mark) another contribution to humanity's exploration of the universe. Mars     2     (capture) humanity's collective imagination for generations. The successful landing of Tianwen-1 in Utopia Planitia (乌托邦平原) is     3     stepping stone to future missions.

Like the space station project and lunar exploration program, China is pursuing the deep space quest for a better future    4     (share) by all, in addition to proving its space capacity.

Mars is at the forefront of international deep space exploration. It can help humanity go deeper into space and provide first-hand data for research, such as the origin and    5     (evolve) of the solar system and life.

Mars,     6     can be reached with existing space capabilities, is also a potential target for crewed landing missions as its environment is closest to     7     of the earth

The independent mission had endured a near 10-month journey     8     the final moment of landing came. A     9     (relative) flat region in the southern part of the Utopia Planitia was chosen for the landing and scientific research value. Earlier research showed the landing site might be the edge of an ancient ocean or lake in the early history of Mars. Now, Chinese scientists    10     (look) for more evidence of water-ice, and will share the data with their international counterparts.
