New Year’s Eve is the last day of the year. It is always an exciting time because people look forward to     1    (welcome) a new year. April Fools' Day is a day     1     people can play jokes on others. No one knows for sure how this holiday began. Some English people hold the     2    （believe） that it began on a day during the 1200. At that time, King John of England was in     3     habit of making a road out of nearly every path he walked regularly. The citizens of one farm village were aware of this. To protect their grass and farms from being destroyed, they built a fence that could keep the king     4     walking through their countryside. The king sent a group of soldiers to tell the villagers     5    （remove） the fence. On hearing that, however, the villagers developed a plan of their own. Shi Liming     4     is a paper-making craftsman in Baoding, Hebei province has been working on the development of high-quality domestic watercolor paper for more than three decades in the industry. Shi’s factory, the Baoding Huarong Paper Factory,     5     (build) in 1992 in Baoding. It makes products for both domestic markets     6     customers in more than forty countries.

    7     factory mainly produces paper for watercolor, oil painting and industrial use, aimed at producing high-quality watercolor paper. While making the watercolor paper, Shi tries his best     8     (show) the excellence of Chinese art and craftsmanship.

Later, Shi set     9     the Baohong Art Museum to promote paper-related knowledge and artistic experience. The museum contains     10     (variety) exhibition areas for multiple functions, where visitors can experience making paper by hand and other interesting hand-on activities.

David was one of     1     most helpful students that we ever had. In 2004, he went to university in London and became     2     (interest) in Chinese culture.

After his graduation     3     university, he went to China to study Chinese at Beijing Language and Culture University. Two years later, he was able to speak Chinese     4     (fluent) and achieved high grades in all subjects.     5     (finish) his studies, he started travelling in China. Some of the cities in China he likes most     6     (be) Beijing, Shanghai, Harbin and Nanjing. In China, he developed an interest in teaching English to Chinese students. Most of the students whom he taught     7     (become) his friends ever since.

When he returned to Britain two months ago, he     8     (bring) back from China many interesting books, dictionaries, paintings and photos     9     (spread) Chinese culture. He donated most of them to our school library. Some of the books were gifts he got from his Chinese friends and students. The paintings that David donated to the school are being shown in the exhibition room. Teachers and students at our school wish to thank David for his     10     (kind).
