Red Sorghum | Mo Yan (Author), George Backman (Narrator), Howard Goldblatt (translator) The acclaimed novel of love and resistance during late 1930s China by Mo Yan, winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature. Spanning three generations, this novel of family and myth is told through a series of flashbacks that describe events of shocking horror set against a landscape of gemlike beauty, as the Chinese battle both Japanese invaders and each other in the turbulent (动荡的) 1930s. |

jklm It was interesting and vivid, but not…
This is a ‘history’ of a family recalling various exploits of family members. I liked the realism but the jumping about backwards and forwards from decade to decade makes me confused.
There is a distinct lack of ideals or kindness, but it did lead me to reflect on the charm that gang leaders can have. So it was interesting and vivid, but not a page turner or a pleasant read.
K.N.R. A New Classic
War cannot destroy all. This family stretches three generations and the bonds are as strong as the sorghum, though perhaps suffering from storms. His style of writing is very pretty, sometimes too much and sometimes just perfect. The novel switches lawlessly back and forth. The use of third-person always enables the writing to adjust to different scenes with ease. The only bad part is the end. Mo Yan tries too hard to force a feeling of filial (孝顺的) devotion and ancestral respect on the reader. Otherwise it is an exciting, intense book with violence, horror, and shooting. An extraordinary achievement.

【推荐1】New psychological thriller Curses of Cousins is a fascinating novel, mixing real-world issues with a fictional investigation to uncover the truth behind an island nation’s misfortunes.
It is set in the fictitious Caribbean island of Sigatoo and follows a young teacher called Brooklyn as she sets out on a personal pursuit to end the community’s traditional practice of intermarriage between cousins.
This custom, as we discover, is the reason that many families, including her own, suffer from a range of incurable illnesses—the “curse” referred to in the book’s title which hurts not only the lead character, but the rest of her immediate relations.
With a sharp intelligence and natural curiosity into the ‘whys’ behind things, Brooklyn wants to clear up the misunderstanding of the curse, which has made generations of islanders suffer since Sigatoo’s original settlement, and let the light of reason shine down to save future generations from the same health problems.
This, however, is going to be anything but easy. As she quickly learns, discovering the truth is only the first obstacle. The challenge will lie in getting the misogynistic (歧视女性的), immoral island leaders to back her, and the families that have been brought up to consider intermarriage between cousins as perfectly acceptable to change their ways.
All of this she must do while being in great pain because of her MS, and having to live with a series of tragedies, including losing her baby daughter and twin sister to cruel genetic diseases.
And if that isn’t enough, there’s also a metaphysical battle—literally between manifestations (显示) of good and evil—spreading in her mind. In one corner is VOD, an evil creature who teases Brooklyn and tries to lead her away from her important social mission. On the other side is Chutzpah, the representation of purity and all that is noble within the human spirit.
Brooklyn, however, is a fighter and is only strengthened by each new disaster to push on harder with her campaign to educate the islanders about the dangers of interbreeding.
What raises Curses of Cousins, however, is that the author, Cliff Bacchus, a practising doctor based in the Bahamas, is, like Brooklyn, on a mission. The unusual theme for the story—it is the first time this topic has been handled in fiction—is based on his own research and experiences with patients who have been the unfortunate victims of the practice of cousin intermarriage. His purpose is admirable. As a doctor, he wishes to warn readers of the risks that come with the practice, wherever they are in the world.

Today, I would like to recommend a book to you, which taught me an important lesson about prejudice and racism.
The main character in this novel is a lawyer named Atticus Finch from the American South. The American South in the 1960s was known to be a place where many white people looked down upon black people, except for Finch. When the local judge asked him to defend a black man named Tom Robinson, who was wrongly accused of raping a white woman, Finch agreed.
The author Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama in 1926. In her childhood, she, like Scout and Jem, learned about racial prejudice and the damage it could do. To Kill a Mockingbird was her first and only novel published.
For me, the most memorable quotes in the book are “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but… sing their hearts out for us.
A.It took her seven years to complete. |
B.Racism exists at all levels of society. |
C.People worked for the rights of black people. |
D.But many people tried to stop Finch from doing his job. |
E.That’s why it is morally and totally wrong to kill a mockingbird. |
F.To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel published in1960 by American author Harper Lee. |
G.And they finally understood the importance of looking at the world with an unprejudiced mind. |
【推荐3】I was delighted to receive a copy of Marie Curie and her Daughters by Shelley Emling through my letter-box a few weeks ago.
Actually science has never really been my “thing”. At school I really struggled with physics and chemistry and was much happier in English Language or History classes. My mind is not structured enough to understand how science works, I’m a bit of a daydreamer and prefer using my imagination rather than learning facts, figures and formulae(公式). Of course I knew who Marie Curie was, her great achievements, her contribution to science, to medical advances and influence on the world, but other than that, I really had very little idea about her life.
Shelley Emling has based this book on Marie Curie’s relationship with her two daughters, Irene and Eve. The book begins after the early death of Pierre Curie, when Marie is left to carry on the work that they started as a couple and to bring up her two small daughters alone. Emling has concentrated her book on the communication between Marie and her daughters. She was not an overly-protective mother, nor did she hesitate to spend time away from her daughters, yet this did not weaken their relationship. Marie was a caring and loving mother, who encouraged her daughters to become individuals, to achieve what they wanted to.
Marie Curie and her husband made the decision not to profit from their discoveries. It was because of this that Marie had to depend on donations to carry out her work, and that she had to carry out tours of the States.
I was very impressed by Emling’s writing style — she has told the story of three extraordinary women who were way ahead of their time in an interesting and very readable manner.
