Grieve Her Mum Through Cooking

Grief and mourning can be expressed in many ways.     1    . She found comfort through cooking her mother’s recipes in a planner and in turn, learned about her mother. Her attitude to life was mirrored in her cooking.

Along with the love of food and family, her mother, and her grandmother before her, had passed down a carved wooden spoon. It was given from one to the next.     2    . She inherited this spoon and the passion her mother had.

After her mother’s death, Debbie also found the planner containing these detailed dinner party plans and recipes. Her mother was not gone.     3    . And Debbie has learned a lot about her since she began cooking her food.

4    . In trying to make out her mother’s notes, Debbie has bonded again with her father in shared grief and understanding. Asking Dad who is who, what is what and learning and understanding, Debbie has been able to see a new side of her mother.

Everything Debbie is cooking is inherited, as is the joy and sense of achievement she feels. When she began cooking with her mother as a kid, she was in charge of turning the toast, to stop it catching. Now she is holding the spoon, adding the spices and still looking up from the stove to her mum.     5    .

A.It was never easy to lose someone we love
B.She was guiding her through a lifetime of food
C.When it reached Debbie, it was worn and perfect
D.She felt a sense of achievement in cooking her food
E.She is always going to be her mother’s kitchen follower

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要讲的是在一起事故中Rihaan因为没有戴头盔所以头部受了伤,兄弟Aarush表现得很冷静并且对其伤口进行了的处理,并因此获得了奖章。

【推荐1】It was the scene from every parent’s worst nightmare when 8-year-old Rihaan was left lying in the middle of the road, with his bike bent beside him as the car that hit him stopped suddenly.

On hearing the loud bang, my husband, Ashish, ran down the driveway, picked his limp son up into his arms and carried him inside. Seeing Rihaan was bleeding badly from his head, legs and arms, my husband and I were both terrified he’d been so seriously injured.

I called triple zero. But I was overcome with shock and struggling to speak. It was young Aarush, Rihaan’s brother, who took over the call, communicating key information to emergency services. Then, he quickly took clean towels to press on Rihaan’s wounds and stop the blood. When he noticed his brother’s eyes wide with fear and tears falling down his cheeks, he also tried to comfort him.

After a short time, an ambulance and the police arrived, and the professionals could take over from Aarush. Rihaan was rushed to hospital where scans showed he was concussed (脑震荡) but luckily had broken no bones.

“He’d been thrown 7 metres in the air.” Ashish recalled. “And wearing no helmet (头盔), he was very lucky the driver was not speeding. We don’t blame the driver, for it could have been anyone,” Ashish said.

With Rihaan recovering well, it meant the focus turned quickly to his brave brother. After the accident the operator who took Ashish’s call, Nick Smith, nominated (提名) him for a Junior Triple Zero Hero award. As for Rihaan — who is back on the bike and always wears a helmet now — he agrees his brother was a hero. “But I’d quite like a medal too,” Rihaan, said cheerfully, “I suffered all the pain and then he got the award!”

2】My memories of my father are divided into parts and shares. Alive, and then dead. Healthy, and then helpless. And further back in time, the first and most division: Present and then absent; loving, and then indifferent.

He used to be a good writer and loving father. When I was a 16-year-old girl, he was fired from his company, a public, gossip-based dismissal that he would spend decades refusing responsibility for. This was the first crack that divided my relationship with him into poles of before and after. To escape his shame, he pushed away those who reminded him of it, first divorcing my mother, then alienating my sister and I.

As an adult, my relationship with my father was one of low expectations and high boundaries. He spent most of his time travelling. But when he died of heart failure in August, I was knocked off balance by the weight of the blow. I thought, after years of setting up delicate fences around our relationship, that I had already begun letting go. His death delivered a realization: despite years of analyzing his complicated love for me, there were pieces of my father I never understood—until I found my father’s notebooks in his cupboard.

In the notebooks, he often collected documentation: train tickets from Rome or a photograph of San Francisco’s Prescott Hotel. But what he was also doing was offering fatherly guidance, the kind I could only receive after he died. His life, in which what he had was never quite enough, was eventually exposed. In his final decade, he realized he had built a castle for himself upon sand and regret. Now in his entries, I hear his voice. “Debaleh,” I hear him say, using his pet name for me, “learn from my mistakes.”

I read these pages among my dad’s clothes, and wept. I hadn’t known that my father, too, lived with that familiar ache for new horizons in his heart, the one that can only be comforted by traveling.

A.Finding her father’s clothes.B.Getting to know her late father.
