This year, it felt as if every good movie was also an argument for why movies matter. They reward your attention, engage your feelings and respect your intelligence.
Petite Maman (Céline Sciamma)
The death of a grandmother, the sorrow of a parent, the acquisition of a new friend — these ordinary experiences, occurring in the life of an 8-year-old girl, provide the basic structure of this spare, perfect film. Whether it’s best described as a modern-dress fairy tale, or a low-tech time travel fantasy is up to you. What’s certain is that the performance of the cast causes maximum emotional impact. (Coming to theaters.)
Summer of Soul (Questlove)
This documentary about a series of open-air concerts in Harlem in 1969, connecting impressive performances with interviews with musicians and audience members, is a shot of pure joy. But the film is more than a time capsule: It’s a history lesson and an argument for why art matters, and what it can do, especially in time of anxiety. (Streaming on Hulu.)
Bring Your Own Brigade (Lucy Walker)
This documentary about California wildfires of September 2021 is also, almost by accident, an exploration of the country’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The picture Walker paints is complicated, partly because that’s the way people are: panicked, generous, stupid and brave. The movie is hardly optimistic, but its open-mindedness provides a buffer against despair. (In theaters.)
The Velvet Underground (Todd Haynes)
Like “Summer of Soul”, this documentary revisits the music of the 1960s in a spirit that is more historical than just recalling the past. Rather than gathering present-day musicians to celebrate their ancestors, Haynes concentrates on the Velvet, a band, and on the artistic scene that inspired them. In particular, he focuses on their connections to the experimental cinema that boomed in New York. (Streaming on Apple TV+.)

The production is staged in the James J. Hill House in St. Paul, Minnesota. The action takes place in several rooms on several levels of the 36,000 square foot building.
This is not the first time that the Wayward Theatre Company has chosen a special place to stage a theatrical production. Cofounder and director Sarah Nargang said that the group prefers to perform (表演) in untraditional spaces. She noted, “It allows people to communicate with these spaces, as well as the text, in new and interesting ways.”
Besides the James J. Hill House, the group has performed at the Minnesota Transportation Museum, in hotel rooms, and in the back of a brewery (酒厂).
“We usually choose a play and then find a place for it,” Nargang said. “But we try to choose historic places as much as we can.”
The James J. Hill House was built for a railroad businessman of the same name. The fivestory mansion (豪宅) sits on a large area of land overlooking the city of St. Paul and the Mississippi River. Completed in 1891, in what was known as the Gilded Age, it is now owned by the Minnesota Historical Society.
“The James J. Hill House allowed us to stage Hamlet during the Gilded Age and show much of rich people’s lives of that time,” Nargang said.
Performing Hamlet in a mansion affected the way the production was choreographed (为……编舞). “Entering and exiting are more difficult because you don’t have many choices of where you can go,” said Tim McVean, who plays the role of Hamlet.
“There’s a lot more running around,” added actor Tim Perfect, who plays Claudius, the ruler who marries Hamlet’s mother. “But there’s no way any stage could compete with this place for beauty.”

Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel Little Women isn’t a stranger to film adaptation, but this 1994 version from the director Gillian Armstrong targets the film at modern audiences without changing its old-fashioned style. Handsomely staged and acted, this is a first-rate introduction to one of the great works of young adult literature.
My Fair Lady (1964)
George Cukor’s energetic adaptation of the Broadway musical based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion won eight Academy Awards. Audrey Hepburn shines as Eliza Doolittle, the lower-class Cockney flower girl who the phonetics (语音学) professor Henry Higgins believes he can turn into a proper lady by merely bettering her speech. The script carefully touches issues of gender and class while creating a credible chemistry between the leads.
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
The latest Alice adaptation on the big screen, Tim Burton’s in 2010, is perhaps the furthest of all the adaptations from Caroll’s original. Burton’s Alice, trying to freshen up a 150-year -old story, picks up the story some years after Alice wakes up, imagining a grown-up Alice who finds herself once again in Wonderland when she escapes from a marriage proposal (求婚).
Lady Bird (2017)
Adapted by Greta Gerwig, this funny coming-of-age story is set in her hometown. Saoirse Ronan shines in the leading role as a quietly rebellious (叛逆的) high-school senior whose search for love and popularity causes conflicts with her mother. In Gerwig’s screenplay, characters are complicated and flawed, yet deeply sympathetic.

It’s really good to know you’re covering for me while I’m away on a training course. Thanks so much. Knowing that you will be teaching the kids has made me relaxed. I’m sure you’ll get on fine with them. I thought I should leave you some notes on a couple of things that are planned for this week and other advice that will hopefully see you through to next Friday.
Tuesday: The class is going to visit the dinosaur museum, make sure they take their notebooks and remind them on Monday to bring a packed lunch and entrance money.
Thursday: I’ve promised them they can watch a disney DVD as a special treat. It’s in my locker. There are some worksheets to go with it. By the way, don’t worry about marking them. I’ll do it when I’m back.
You know the head teacher is on the warpath about being late. So be warned. If you get to school even a minute past 8:15, she is likely to give you a really telling off.
Seriously, though you have a great week, the kids are wonderful. Don’t let Mark and Jack sit together and you shouldn’t have any disciplinary (纪律性的) problems! Which reminds me, if you do have any problems, just tell the head. She is very supportive when it comes to discipline. One last thing, could you leave notes on what you do, please?
Best wishes,
Stef
