Ada Smith, chairwoman of a non-profit organization Protect the Earth, wore green for a special event with school children in New York on Wednesday. The 40-year-old woman stood against the cool weather in a long green coat that has been in her wardrobe (衣柜) for years.
She wore the coat for the first time in 2019 during her husband Bill Smith’s tour to a national environmental conference, and she put on it again in her classic sustainable (可持续的) style. Ada’s recycled outfit was perfect for the occasion, all about the environment.
Ada and Bill headed to the Central Park, where they spent time brainstorming ideas with students on how to deal with environmental issues. Ada said, “Education is such an important part of protecting our planet. We must inspire the next generation with the optimism, confidence and enthusiasm to chase those solutions and continue building a more sustainable future.”
Ada and Bill helped the students generate more than 60 ideas to help the environment. Ada said, “Young children already identify the climate as one of their biggest worries, and our organization aims to educate them that we can find the answers by working together.”
Their visit came ahead of an award ceremony, in which five winners will be announced in the first round of the environmental prize pioneered by Ada. Ada and Bill will appear at the ceremony on the next weekend, when they will walk the “green carpet” with activists committed to environmental causes.
Though their time with the children was part of a larger initiative, environmentalist Steve Johnson said, “They didn’t come there for a photo, but to sit, talk to and listen to kids. It is from the heart and people get that.”

These days the news about the planet can be overwhelming for kids and their parents. Actually, personal actions can make a difference.
UNPLUG
Don't worry—we don't mean taking a break from your phone. We’re talking about the charger. Chargers that remain plugged into the wall can suck energy even when the device is turned off. Ask your kids to remind you to unplug chargers when they’re not in use, as well as switch off power plugs for TVs and lamps.
FRESH FRUIT
Buying seasonal, local food cuts down on the energy needed to grow and transport it. Before taking your children to the grocery store, ask them to look for fruits and vegetables in season.
SAFE SOUVENIRS
Avoid souvenirs or other things made from animal parts like scales, teeth, feathers, seashells, and so on. Instead, take your kids to local markets where you can meet the artists and search for something made of materials like used cans, or magazine paper.
KID SCIENTISTS
Instantly transform your kids into scientists by signing up for a citizen science project that identifies animals. Just taking a photo of an animal and uploading it to a site like iNaturalist can help biologists learn how the animal is adapting to a changing world.
It's true that sweeping collective action is needed to control climate change, but small adjustments by people help too. Plus, by taking action to protect the planet, you can help your children feel empowered in the face of these global problems. Start with these tips to get the whole family involved in protecting the Earth.

Snaizeholme, near the town of Hawes, was covered in woodland centuries ago but the 561-hectare valley is now almost barren (贫瘠的). Across the Yorkshire Dales, total tree cover amounts to just five per cent, the Woodland Trust has said, with ancient woodland making up just one per cent of that cover.
The trust wants to raise £8 million for a decades-long program that will see a restored forest providing habitats for threatened species such as woodland birds and black grouse. Planted trees will be mostly native broadleaved species such as alder, silver birch, down birch, willow, aspen, rowan, hawthorn and blackthorn, with montane species on the higher slopes.
Al Nash, who is heading the project for the Woodland Trust, said, “I love the Dales but the one thing it lacks in many areas is an abundance (丰富性) of trees. Here we will be giving nature and biodiversity a big boost and creating a rich variety of habitats. It is a rare opportunity to create a sizeable wildlife conservation area for the north of England. It’s clearly a wonderful opportunity to create something real that can be seen and touched in the Yorkshire Dales for the fight against climate change.”
The first stage of planting has already begun with funding from the White Rose Forest, DEFRA and corporate donors. More trees than needed will be planted as not all will survive in the windswept, rainy upland valley. They will be arranged at random and without plastic guards to help stimulate natural forest growth, the trust said.

Covering less than two-thousandth of the space in the ocean, coral reefs provider shelter for more than a quarter of the world's sea creatures. However, the coral cover area has been declining in the past few decades. Global warming is the reason for the decline adding impact to other human activities such as over-exploitation and coastal development.
Xisha Islands in the South China sea was once a paradise for fish and sea plants. It is now silent in the water there because the coral reefs are in critical situation. To help the coral community recover, Huang decided to plant corals under the sea. Huang and her team first bred coral seedlings in a nursery, and then transplanted them to the seabed. Different types of corals were chosen according to the various seabed conditions.
However, growing corals on the seafloor is not an easy job weather conditions are one of the most major variables that influence coral planting. Wave, height 2 meters or more can be dangerous, because the divers find moving around underwater difficult and the small diving boat can easily be blown away.
Seasickness is another great challenge.“The journey to a coral plantation area usually takes four days, but it took six days last time because of the strong wind. 1just lay in the bed and moved up and down with the boat, which made me feel sick,” she said.
Their efforts have paid off. Since 2000, Huang and her team have planted 120,000 to 150,000 corals, covering 20,000 square meters of seabed of the South China Sea.
“The underwater ecosystem needs time to recover. Planting corals is only the first step in restoring the underwater ecology. We need time to plant more,” said Huang. “Hopefully, the corals will gradually become a forest and the fish will come back.”

Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than did Westerners. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

Teenagers, however, have many more opportunities to get stressed than people in any other age group. Being a teenager is hard. You are not a child any more, but you are not an adult, even though you have to deal with some very grown-up problems and decisions. Families can be one of the biggest causes of stress, such as problems with parents arguing at home or problems with brothers and sisters. Teenagers also have a lot of stress from school, either from their teachers or from their friends. Some teenagers also feel stressed about choosing their education after high school. Getting a place at university can be very difficult and some cannot afford to go to university. The stress about getting a job when finishing school is hard for some teenagers. There are so many young people finishing school and not enough jobs for them. Sadly, there is nothing we can do to remove these causes of stress from the 1ives of teenagers, but you can learn the best way to deal with it. Talking to people is one of the best ways to deal with stress. It may sound simple, but it is true. A problem shared is a problem halved.
1. Why is being a teenager often difficult?A.Because even though you are not an adult, you must deal with adult problems. |
B.Because even though you are an adult, you must deal with children's problems. |
C.Because even though you are a teenager, you must do a lot of homework. |
D.Because adults often make them feel stressed. |
A.by asking them to go to university. |
B.by helping them with their homework. |
C.as teenagers quarrel with their parents, and their brothers or sisters |
D.as families never support their children enough. |
A.by not trying to find a job. | B.by forgetting about our problems. |

Last week, the question was answered with a song. “The answer is blowing in the wind,” said Michael Meyer, taking a line from a Bob Dylan song. Meyer is the lead scientist for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program. It turns out that solar winds from the sun are slowly blowing away Mars’ atmosphere.
Today, Mars has a thin atmosphere. It is cold and dry, with a desert-like environment. Jakosky says it used to be much more different. “When we look at ancient Mars, we see a different type of surface. One that had valleys looked like they were carved by water, lakes that were standing for a long period of time. We see an environment that was much more able to support liquid water.”
Recently they found a kind of liquid water that flows with salt down a mountain area of the planet. But it is not always there. Scientist Michael Meyer describes what they found: “We’re seeing water, with the salt that’s able to flow down the sides of the cliff. Why is this important? That means there is water on Mars, on the surface of Mars today.”
Scientists already knew that ice exists on Mars. So why is it important to find liquid water? Meyer explains: “It means that we have a resource. And when we're looking at sending humans to Mars, water is one of the key things that we need to have, not only for astronauts to drink, but also to make oxygen, to make fuel.”
Sending humans to Mars is still in the distant future. NASA is aiming for the 2030s. Both US government and private industries are developing rockets and spacecraft to get people to Mars.
1. Why is the atmosphere of Mars disappearing?A.Because Mars doesn't have water to keep the atmosphere. |
B.Because the atmosphere is affected by the earth. |
C.Because the atmosphere is blown away by the solar wind. |
D.Because Mars has no condition to make the atmosphere exist. |
①Taking shower. ②Drinking for astronauts. ③Making fuel.
④Watering plants. ⑤Producing oxygen. ⑥Washing clothes.
A.②④⑤ | B.①③④⑤ | C.②③④⑥ | D.②③⑤ |
A.Whether water exists on Mars or not isn’t important to humans. |
B.Mars’ atmosphere has changed a lot since it existed. |
C.We can successfully send humans to Mars from now on. |
D.Water can not appear on Mars because of its thin atmosphere. |

B.Mars Is Strongly Influenced by the Solar Wind |
C.Mars and Its Thin Atmosphere |
D.Water Does Exist on Mars |
