I feel an unusual sensation and all of a sudden: panic! My worries are not limited to health concerns though, and they go in the direction of anxiety about the future of the world, worries about my finances, and fears that I’m not good enough.
Let me go back a few decades, back to when anxiety wasn’t part of my life. When I was a child, I loved art. I drew and I colored because that’s what I enjoyed. I went to college to become an art teacher. When I finished school in May of 2001, I had a part-time design job, and after the event of September 11th, 2001, I knew I needed to travel, to get out of the safe life I was living in my hometown. That’s when my creative practices fell by the wayside.
Luckily, after the birth of my daughter in 2014, the desire to create came back. At first, I was using a tiny corner of a bedroom in our rental house to paint. Eventually we bought a house, and I had the space to spread out, ready to paint whenever the urge struck. That’s when I started noticing something important: Painting stilled me in a way that nothing else did. It eased my fears and anxieties in a way other practice (deep breathing, etc) did not, at least not as consistently. When anxious thoughts start, I know what to do. I head into my studio, grab some materials, and start creating. Soon enough, the worries are gone and instead my mind is quiet.
I think the reason why painting is so helpful for my anxiety is that, in order for me to be anxious, I have to be worrying about the future and what it holds. When I’m doing an activity that requires my full concentration, I have to be in the moment. It doesn’t matter if you’re artistic. The only thing that matters is finding a way to be here, in the now, instead of in the unknowable future.

The work offers art-lovers an attractive clue to what the model for the world’s most famous painting really looked like. Controllers of the museum found the picture hidden beneath layers of paints during restoration work on a picture initially thought to have been a later replica(exact copy) of the Mona Lisa.
The restored version shows the same woman that Leonardo depicted (描画), against a landscape similar to that shown in the background of the original, which now hangs in the Louvre in Paris. And while the features of Leonardo’s Mona Lisa have been dulled by centuries of dirt and layers of cracked paints—which are unlikely ever to be removed—in the recently-rediscovered copy, she appears fresher-faced and younger than her better-known “twin”.
News of the find was revealed at a meeting at London’s National Gallery, linked to its “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan” exhibition. “This sensational (轰动的) find will transform our understanding of the world’s most famous picture,” the Art Newspaper reported, adding that the clues found on the Madrid version suggest that the original and the copy were begun at the same time and painted next to each other, as the work went on.
Miguel Falomir, manager of Italian painting at the Prado, told reporters that expert analysis suggested a strong link between Leonardo and the artist who painted the copy. “The painting was done in the painter’s own workshop,” he said. “It is absolutely consistent with Leonardo’s work, but Leonardo didn’t actually do any work on it himself.”

Etienne Terrus was born in El ne in 1857, and died there in 1922. Terrus visited Paris, but unlike many other painters at the time, he did not move there. Instead, he spent a lot of time near El ne and painted scenes from the area. Terrus is important to the people of Elne because of this tie.
The Terrus Museum has been collecting artwork by Terrus for almost 20 years. Most of the art works have been bought in the last few years. The museum spent about $190,000 to buy paintings, drawings, and watercolours. Some pieces of art have also been given to the museum.
The museum recently closed for about 4 months while the building was being renovated. As they were getting ready to re-open the museum, people from the museum asked Eric Forcada to help them figure out how to organize the paintings.
Mr. Forcada studies art history. As he looked at the works of art that the museum had, it didn’t take him long to find out that something was wrong. Some paintings didn’t look at all like Terrus’s work or were painted on the wrong kind of canvas. Some paintings showed buildings that had been built a long time after Mr. Terrus died. Several paintings had the name of the artist written in ink on the painting. Mr. Forcada said, “On one painting, the ink signature was wiped away when I passed my white glove over it. Over 80 of 140 paintings were by other people.”
Mr. Forcada says that problems like these are more common for small museums like the Terrus Museum. Unlike big museums, small ones don’t have enough money to pay experts to check out artwork carefully. The good news for the Terrus Museum is that experts say that almost 58 of their Terrus paintings are real.

Johnsson knew few people believed magicians had supernatural powers because they feel certain there is a rational explanation for magic, and it’s often science.
What’s the science behind popular magic tricks? Let’s take a look. Levitating(悬浮)objects A popular trick is making objects levitate, with smaller objects being especially easy to “fly”. To the viewer, the levitating object may seem to resist gravity, but there’s a simple explanation—quantum (量子)physics. Magicians coat an object in a layer of magnetic paint and place it on top of a superconductor cooled by liquid nitrogen. The opposing forces cause the object to float above the superconductor.
Vanishing liquids
Many magicians can make liquids disappear. The explanation is simple—chemistry. Sodium polyacrylate, also known as “waterlock”, is a chennical compound that can absorb liquids. It’s used in everyday products such as baby diapers. What’s magical about this compound is that it can absorb 100 to 1000 times its mass in liquid.
When a magician pours water into a cup lined with sodium polyacrylate, the water is quickly absorbed.
Burning paper
Another interesting trick is when magicians set paper on fire, it remains undamaged. Magicians can even use money in this trick. However, there’s a scientific explanation-chemistry! The item is dipped in a mixture of alcohol and water before the trick. When it’s lit on fire, the alcohol covering the paper begins to burn. Alcohol burns and changes into gas at a much lower temperature than water, so the water protects the paper from burning.
1. Where is this passage most likely from?A.Science fiction. | B.A textbook. | C.The popular press. | D.A news report. |

Encouraging women to be more confident isn’t the best way to deal with the leadership gap between males and females. As a matter of fact, women have greater chances of becoming bosses in the opt-out model than they do in the opt-in model.
In the opt-in model, women often undervalue their own skills. Some come from cultures that teach them to be modest; others fear seeming too active. Therefore, women are less confident and tend to work more years than men do before applying for a promotion. They basically need to feel super ready.
The researchers decided to overturn the model: What if all qualified applicants running for leadership roles have the choice to give up if they want to? This so-called opt-out model pushes companies to keep hiring employees unless the staff take steps to show they don’t want to participate.
Researchers tested the idea in the lab. In a series of experiments, more than 1,000 men and women worked in teams on a variety of tasks. They were all evaluated on the quality of their work, and the highest performers naturally became bosses unless they actively gave up. Surprise: The management male/female gap narrowed in the opt-out model.
In another group where people needed to opt in to be considered for a leadership role, the imbalance continued, even when women knew they were top performers and would surely become the boss if they applied. The suggestion is that all those efforts to support equality have little effect unless it is naturally accepted that women are suitable for leaderships.
Opt-in models are everywhere in the workplace. Being aware of the problem and then finding ways to change the models is really important. If women have to opt in, the message is “you shouldn’t consider signing up unless you think you’re really competent and competitive." In an opt- out system, however, the message is everyone is qualified and under consideration. It’s a policy that basically brings better choices for managers and it is really good for the future of organizations.

The machine has a long robotic arm attached to a base with wheels. It can perform some of the same medical examination tasks as doctors. For example, the device can listen to sounds made by patients’ hearts and lungs.
Cameras record the robot’s activities, which are controlled at a distance so doctors can avoid coming in close contact with infected patients. Doctors and other medical workers can run the machine from a nearby room, or from much farther away.
The robot’s main designer is Zheng Gangtie, an engineer and professor at China’s Tsinghua University in Beijing. He told Reuters news agency that he got the idea for the machine when the number of cases of the COVID-19 virus was rising quickly in the city of Wuhan.
One of Zheng’s friends, head of Bering’s Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, told him that one of the biggest problems in dealing with COVID-19 was that healthcare workers treating patients were getting themselves infected. Zheng said he wanted to do something to help this situation.
So the engineer gathered a team and went to work on the robot. Zheng said the team was able to change two robotic arms. The new robot is almost completely automated, Zheng said. It can even disinfect (将……消毒)itself after performing actions involving patient contact.
“Doctors are all very brave,” Zheng told Reuters. “But this virus is just too contagious. We can use robots to perform the most dangerous tasks.”
However, Zheng said he had heard from some doctors that it would be better not to build such robots. This is because many patients still desire a personal presence to help calm them during treatment.
The team now has two robots and both have been tested by doctors at hospitals in Beijing. One machine was once taken to Wuhan’s Union Hospital, where doctors there were trained to use it.
Zheng would like to build more of the robots, but money from the university has run out, each robot costs about$72,000 to make. He does not plan to commercialize the design, but hopes that a company can begin that process.
1. What are Paragraph 4 and 5 mainly about?A.When the robot was designed. | B.How the robot is controlled. |
