China and Western country may have different cultural beliefs about certain animals. But when it came to pigs, we somehow reach an agreement that pigs are lazy, ugly, stupidly and shameless. None of these words described pigs are exactly positive. Moreover, the truth is that pigs have some good qualities. And there’s probably no good time to clear their names than now, with the arrival of the Year of the Pig on Chinese Spring Festival, which fell February 5 this year. According to a paper publishing in 2017, pigs can tell between those who treat them well or those who don’t. Perhaps these are the qualities of pigs to keep it in mind— their intelligence, cuteness and patience.

I am from Wisconsin, and when we met someone for the first time, we usually shake hands with. Well, I had big surprise in Belgium. When I was introduced to my friend’s brother, something happened, that made me felt uncomfortable. I said “Hi” to him, extended my hand and he came up to me and kissed me on the cheek, not once, and three times, going from one cheek to the other! Of course, I went red and they started to laugh at me. In Belgium, that is common to greet someone by kissing three times. How vast different greeting tradition are across the world!

Several days before, some American students visited our school. From them I discovered some differences in school life among the US and China. For an example, each class lasts 50 minutes in the US, that is five minutes longer than that in China. Other difference is that their afternoon classes begin at 1:00 pm and school over at 3:00 pm. Then they take part in club activity or play sports. Also, many US students find part-time jobs in his free time. They don’t have a dream job in mind. They think there has no difference between jobs. Working is a useful experience for them and they made money at the same time.

When discussing cross-cultural differences in a work context, people usually talk with issues, like values and beliefs, which have impact on their working relationships. Cross- cultural difficulties often arise unless individuals make assumptions regarding how similar another people are to them. Although much in common exist between members, but it’s not wise to assume all people have the same beliefs or priorities. For example, in East Asia, there was a tendency to keep relations harmonious by avoiding mentioning problem. In North America, on the other hand, people prefer getting to the point fastly and directly. However, such an approach may make someone embarrassing personally or publicly.
