I found that Minnie had been unhappy ever since her family moved away from Hartford, but I was never quite sure how to approach her about it.
From the time she was a child, she was abnormally quiet; she would rarely speak unless she was spoken to, and even then her response would be very little. Despite her soft-spoken nature. she showed a great interest in art-particularly painting. Whatever she lacked in words, she made up with the paintbrush, and so it was through her paintings that I first noticed something was wrong. When she painted an animal, it would be the pigeons(鸽子)flying in Hanford Park; or, when she painted a person, it would be the partner she played badminton with at the Hartford playground. Whether intentionally or not, he sowed in her paintings what she hesitated to put into words.
Being her elder cousin, I was eager to make her move to the big city as smooth as possible. Hartford was a small country town.so Minnie had grown up alongside familiar faces who were used to her timidity(羞怯). But in the city everyone was a stranger, which made it a challenge for her to communicate with others.
This problem was more obvious with her changing schools. What’s more, she was under some pressure to improve her grades. Although she was a good student, her mother was very demanding of her. She always wanted Minnie to seize all the opportunities to be the best, but it was really difficult for Minnie.
On Fridays when my high school finishes early, I usually head over to the middle school to walk Minnie home. It being such a Friday, I approached the school gate expecting to find her waiting for me as usual, but she wasn’t there.

There was something in the elderly woman’s grace that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of her steps, the woman moved with deliberation(从容), and there was no hesitation in her gestures.
It was a few years ago, and I had taken a part-time holiday-season job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I could see the people outside rushing by.
The elderly woman entered the store, along with her daughter, who was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, sighing and checking her watch every few seconds. I guessed if she had possessed a rope, she would have fastened it to her mother to drag her along to keep step with the rush of other shoppers.
The elderly woman separated from her daughter and began to seek through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title written on an old piece of paper.
Rather than rush off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I thought I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment. Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who’d passed away the previous Christmas. I missed my mom and still felt regretful about the moments when I’d used my impatience to make her life unhappy.
As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced its floor plan: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.
We found the DVD and she thanked me, saying that it was the one she’d enjoyed when she was her daughter’s age. Unwillingly, I accompanied her to the cash register, realizing I had to return the elderly woman to her daughter, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.

Jim slumped on the couch. Mother’s Day was coming up, and he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without money?” he thought.
Jim picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree(疯狂购物) for her,” said the ad.
“This is perfect!” thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper, taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes a lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”
Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry(参赛作品), “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.
Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Jim still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.
“What am I going to do now?” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a shopping spree, and he still didn’t have any money. He had to think of something. Jim closed his eyes and curled his toes and thought so hard that his ears hurt.

I used to hate running. It seemed too hard, and pushing outside my comfort zone was not something I was raised to do.
In fact, I wouldn’t have become a runner if it weren’t for my husband, Charles. He had been a serious competitive runner for many years. After our marriage, he wouldn’t stop talking about how much he missed it.
“So start running again, why don’t you?” I was getting tired of hearing about it.
So he picked it up again, and after about a year, I started to join him at the track. Every morning, Charles would take me for a jog around our neighborhood. Sometimes we greeted our neighbors; sometimes we felt the cool breeze kiss our faces. I began to get the joy of running. Just a few weeks later, Charles signed us both up for a five-kilometer race. I hesitated about doing it. It was too soon.
But on the race day, there I was.
The gun went off. Thousands of runners pushed forward.
The first kilometer was tough.
“I don’t think I’m gonna make it.” I was already breathing heavily and painfully aware of the group of runners pounding past me.
“No, you’re doing great”, said Charles. He was trying to encourage me, to get me focused on something other than my discomfort.
“I can’t,” I said, barely in an unnoticeable voice.
He tried a different way to persuade me. “Just make it to that house and let’s see how you feel.”
After another minute I saw the three-kilometer mark. All I could think of was that I was dying and that my husband was torturing (折磨) me. Miserable didn’t even begin to describe how I felt. And there was pain, so much pain.
“You’ll be fine. You’ve got less than a kilometer to go.”

It was a sunny day this April, and I was flying with my boy off to Carnavon in my light aircraft to see a solar eclipse (日食). Looking out of the window, I was deeply absorbed in the picturesque scenery below. My son Jacob, 15, who was enthusiastic about flying, was in high spirits.
After 25 years in the mining industry, I’d quit my job to pursue a career in flying. Getting my commercial pilot license in September 2022, I believed this was my calling.
Jacob was a passionate flyer, who always enjoyed the flights with me. “What does this button do?” “How does it work?” “What is the function?” There were so many questions he’d ask curiously. I wonder if he’ll be a pilot some day.
Watching the eclipse through our solar goggles (护目镜), we both were in amazement. After a bite of lunch, I did all my checks and refuelled the plane before flying us back.
Flying back into the air, I headed towards Jandakot Airport, which was right near our house.
More than half way, I spotted some smoke in the air. Realizing we were flying over Lancelin where there’d been some nearby bushfires, I didn’t think there was anything to panic about. Travelling south, we took in the lovely coastline. “This is beautiful!” Jacob exclaimed.
At around 5 p.m., just about five minutes to our destination, the engine suddenly decreased rapidly. Glancing over at my boy, I thought, “this is bad.” As I tried to bring the engine back to life, it worked only for a millisecond (毫秒), and then died again. “Okay mate, we’ve had an engine failure, I said calmly to Jacob. The plane was dropping and we went from 1800 feet to 1500 in just 20 seconds.
Looking forward, I could see Jandakot Airport about 15 kilometres ahead. “We aren’t going to make it,” I told myself. We only had another 60 seconds before making the decision. Looking down at Leighton Beach north of Fremantle below, I saw crowds of people on the beach.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Sally had been playing football all summer. She really enjoyed running after the black and white ball across the grassy field with the other players in her bright orange uniform.
Before each game, they had a practice session. The coach showed her and her team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. She was pretty good at passing the ball, but every time she got a chance to kick the ball to the goal, it would be stopped by a player from the other team or be caught by the goalkeeper. Now the football season was almost over and she still had not scored one single goal. She really felt discouraged and wondered if she should quit football and join a different club.
“After all, I am a girl. I was not born for such a rough game,” Sally told herself. “I will try another club.” She even daydreamed that she was a member of the hip hop club and she was dancing on stage in a big auditorium with thousands of people cheering for her. She also thought about joining a different sport, like jogging or cycling. Anyway, football would be her last choice.
“Don’t give up. No one is born for the game. Use your advantage,” the coach said after Sally told him her doubt during a break between the sessions. “Most important of all, believe yourself. You can do it.”
Sally was not totally convinced but she did want to have a try. When the break was over, the coach blew his whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Sally bent down to tie up her shoes and repeated what the coach had said in her mind. “Use your advantage. Believe yourself. You can do it.”
