Stop Asking Kids What They Want to Be When They Grow
My first beef with the question is that it forces kids to define themselves in terms of work. When you’re asked what you want to be when you grow up, it’s not socially acceptable to say, “A father,” or “A mother,” let alone “A person of integrity.” When we define ourselves by our jobs, our worth depends on what we achieve.
The second problem is the suggestion that there is one calling out there for everyone. Although having a calling can be a source of joy, research shows that searching for one makes students feeling lost and confused. And even if you’re lucky enough to find one, it might not be a well-paid job.
If you manage to overcome those problems, there is a third hurdle: Careers rarely live up to your childhood dreams. In one study, looking for the ideal job left college seniors feeling more anxious, stressed, overwhelmed and depressed throughout the process and less satisfied with the outcome.
One positive aspect of low expectations is that they erase the gap between what we wanted and what we got. Extensive evidence shows that instead of painting a rosy picture of a job, you’re better off going in with a realistic preview of what it’s really like, whether it’s good or bad. Sure, you might be a little less excited to take it, but on average you end up more productive and less likely to give up.
I’m all for encouraging youngsters to aim high and dream big. But take it from someone who studies work for a living: those ambitions should be bigger than work. Asking kids what they want to be leads them to claim a career identity they might never want to earn. Instead, invite them to think about what kind of person they want to be and about all the different things they might want to do.

Bio Safe is a proven safeguard that prevents radio-frequency radiation from reaching your body. It absorbs the electromagnetic waves before they can get to you. Put it on the back of your phone or any device that produces radiation and get rid of radiation forever.
Basically, Bio Safe is a small chip that is produced with a unique combination of minerals. This material has been designed to absorb and practically get rid of the electromagnetic waves produced by mobile phones and other telecommunication devices. Sticking the Bio Safe chip onto the back of your mobile device significantly reduces the heat produced by electromagnetic fields. This heat is what makes the radiation a lasting health risk. An increase of body heat could cause more cell changes in structure, which leads to cancer.
Recently conducted studies have shown that Bio Safe reduces electromagnetic radiation and the heat produced by tested phones up to 99.95% in germ-free laboratory conditions. Further testing showed that Bio Safe is able to reach 80% with any kind of phone in any environment, which makes it one of the most effective products on the market.

In April 2019, Science posted an article that details how various horses and donkeys had been seen digging wells up to six feet deep to try and reach fresh water when they were miles away from the nearest natural source. Apparently, they use their hooves (蹄) to dig into the ground until they have enough water. They were found doing so at one site in Mojave Desert, California, and four different sites in the Sonoran Desert, Arizona.
Scientists quickly set up cameras to watch the area and noticed that as many as 57 species visited the well to drink. Most of them were different types of birds, including Cooper’s hawks, owls, and red-tailed hawks. They were not alone. American badgers and even black bears were seen drinking from the new wells too. It seems that many of the wells became an oasis (绿洲) for those in the surrounding areas as the likes of river toads, sheep, and mule deer all moved into the area.
It seems the wild donkeys and horses that dig wells have done a lot more than create a place to drink; they have changed the local environment now that everything has access to fresh water. Cottonwoods and willows quickly started to appear in some of the spots as they germinated (发芽) in the fresh soil. Not only has this changed the landscape, but it could be the difference needed to bring some of the endangered and critical desert trees back from the edge. Scientists have called it “ecosystem engineering”, an event that sees animals change their environment. The most well- known example of this has often come in the form of beavers (an animal), who create dams that prevent wildfires, raise the water table, and enhance species diversity. Now, it seems the wild donkeys and horses have found a new way to improve their areas, too.

The major difference between being self-employed and working for someone else is the salary factor. If I am employed by a company, I am guaranteed a salary every month. However, when I am self-employed, my income or payments might be more unstable.
When doing my own business, I can have plans for how to improve the business in many ways. But if I work for a company, my ideas might never be respected or put into practice. On the contrary, I might have a great idea, but then that idea becomes no longer mine.
If I have a great idea, I can try it. If it does not work, I am responsible for that too, but then I can make changes and improve my idea without the need to play company politics with the sales department.
A.The company will take the credit for its success |
B.There is one thing that may make self-employment scary |
C.Moreover, self-employment comes with financial advantages |
D.It is indeed an unavoidable topic when it comes to self-employment |
E.However, the benefits of being self-employed are far more than that |
F.I will be responsible for myself, my business, and the staff under me |
G.Despite this risk, working for a boss might not be challenging enough for me |

Her long-term goal is to become a physician and to set up a health clinic in her small town in Haiti. Now as a student at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Jean is looking to use her experience as an immigrant (移民) growing up in an underdeveloped country to help children growing up in Haiti in a similar situation as herself.
In high school, she was accepted by a nonprofit called A Leadership Journey, which helps teenage people of color go on international trips. In 2019, Jean visited Kenya with the group and visited local schools and villages, assisting locals in education, healthcare and community organization.
“The experience I had in Kenya was eye-opening. I saw so much of my childhood in Kenya. When we went to the school, the children were playing a game, and I was the only American who was familiar with it, since we used to play it back in Haiti,” Jean said.
That experience has motivated Jean to seek more international experience as she works on reaching her goals. She is currently aiming to visit South Africa in December, but unlike her first trip, she will need to raise the funds herself. She has tried to raise the $3,000 necessary for the trip on website GoFundMe.
Jean would be taking the trip with International Children's Outreach, which hosts college students from different countries and encourages improving the lives of poor children and young people around the world while integrating the college students into the education process. Jean said that she would put together a STEM education plan and share it with students and educators while assisting in schools and the local community.
“My parents say to always remember where you came from. That doesn't just mean Haiti; it can mean anywhere in the world where people confront challenges due to poverty. I want to be able to share my experience with children from around the world,” Jean said.
