【推荐1】Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it’s not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who were the true winners of a game.

Many people like the action of cheating. It makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn’t solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won’t help on the next test — unless the person cheats again.

Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they are not really earning that good grade. And, if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.

Some kids cheat because they’re busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating. Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.

If you were sick or upset about something the night before and couldn’t study, it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.

A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions together. Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.

A.it is unfair to other people

A.cheaters are often thought highly of
B.people show no respect for those who cheat
C.parents whose kids cheat are often in trouble
D.kids cheat in the test because of swim practice
4. In the passage those cheaters are advised to ______ .
A.spend more time on school than on sports

C.try hard to be intelligent rather than lazy
D.ask their classmates for good methods of study

【推荐2】When there are debates about the world’s top performing education systems, the names that usually get mentioned are the Asian powerhouses such as Singapore and South Korea or the Nordic know-alls, such as Finland or Norway. But with much less recognition, Canada has climbed into the top tier of international rankings.

In the most recent round of international Pise tests, Canada was one of a handful of countries to appear in the top 10 for maths, science and reading. The tests, run by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), are a major study of educational performance and show Canada’s teenagers as among the best educated in the world.     1

At university level, Canada has the world’s highest proportion of working-age adults who have been through higher education — 55% compared with an average in OECD countries of 35%.

2     The top performers are often compact (紧凑的) societies and the current highest achiever, Singapore, has been seen as a model of systematic progress, with each part of the education system integrated into an overarching national strategy.

Canada does not even really have a national education system. It is based on autonomous provinces and it is hard to think of a bigger contrast between a city state such as Singapore and sprawling land mass such as Canada.

The OECD, trying to understand Canada’s success in education, described the role of the federal government as “limited and sometimes non-existent”.

3     Andreas Schleicher, the OECD’s education director, says Canada’s “big uniting theme is equity”. Despite the different policies in individual provinces, there is a common commitment to an equal chance in school. He says there is a strong sense of fairness and equal access — and this is seen in the high academic performance of migrant children.

Within three years of arriving, the Pisa tests show the children of new migrants have scores as high as the rest of their schoolmates.     4

Another distinguishing feature is that Canada’s teachers are well paid by international standards — and entry into teaching is highly selective.

A.It makes Canada one of the few countries where migrant children achieve at a level similar to their non-migrant counterparts.
B.Canada’s success in school tests is also very unusual compared with other international trends.
C.Is school funding linked to results of international Pisa tests?
D.There have been systematic efforts to improve literacy and testing and assessment to identify schools or individuals who are struggling.
E.So how has Canada overtaken so many other countries in education?
F.They are far ahead of geographical neighbours such as the US and European countries with strong cultural ties like the UK and France.

3】Does handwriting matter? Not very much, according to many educators. However, scientists say it is far too soon to declare handwriting is not important. New evidence suggests that the link between handwriting and educational development is deep.

Children not only learn to read more quickly when they first learn to write by hand, but they are also better able to create ideas and remember information. In other words, it’s not only what we write that matters-but how.

A study led by Karin James, a psychologist at Indiana University, gave support to that view. A group of children, who had not learned to read and write, were offered a letter or a shape on a card and asked to copy it in one of the three ways: draw the image on a page but with a dotted line(虚线), draw it on a piece of blank white paper, or type it on a computer. They were then placed in a brain scanner and shown the image again.

It was found that when children had drawn a letter freehand without a dotted line or a computer, the activity in three areas of the brain was increased. These three areas work actively in adults when they read and write. By contrast, children who chose the other two ways showed no such effect. Dr. James believes that the differences are caused by the process of free handwriting. Not only must we first plan and take action in a way but we are also likely to produce a result that is variable. Those are not necessary when we have a line.

It’s time for educators to change their mind and pay more attention to children’s handwriting.

B.How we write is as important as what we write.

3. Which is NOT the children’s task in the experiment?
A.Copy the image on a page but with a dotted line.
B.Draw the image on a piece of blank white paper.

D.Use a brain scanner and show the image again.
4. What’s the author’s attitude to giving up handwriting?
