Every early morning in Southwest China’s Chongqing, there is a common scene at the city’s Rail Transit Line 4: A group of farmers     1     (shoulder) vegetables for sale are busy riding on the subway to downtown.

Nicknamed “packbasket special line”, the second phase of the subway line, connecting Shichuan town to the city center, has     2     total length of 32.8 kilometers and 15 stations. It     3     (provide) local farmers near the town with a wider channel for selling their produce since its opening.

Every morning around 6 o’clock, the entrance and exit of the Shichuan Town station of the line are     4     (crowd) with these special commuters (上下班往返的人)     5     baskets are filled with fresh seasonal vegetables. It took them more than one hour     6     (reach) the city before the opening of the line as they had to take several buses. Now, by taking the subway, they can get there in less than 30 minutes     7     any difficulty. The opening of this subway line not only saves money for the farmers but also time, bringing great     8     (convenient) to them.

To facilitate the farmers, the station, which was supposed to open at 6:15, now opens five minutes earlier every day. The staff members     9     (arrange) at the station also assist as much as possible: guiding them to     10     (efficient) enter the station in order and to use the elevators, and helping them with the baskets.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel runs across a large water area with the Chesapeake Bay on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on     1     other.

Before the bridge     2     (build), ferries (渡船)carried 50 to 60 cars     3     a time across the almost 18 miles of water. It took 90 minutes, and bad weather or rough waters sometimes delayed the ferry. As time went by, more people wanted to get across the bay quickly and on a     4     (rely)schedule. So in 1960, thousands of people began work on the engineering wonder.

The bridge was completed in 1964. But you could say that it’s never really complete. Johnson, who       5     (work)on the bridge for 20 years, and his crew go out daily     6     (inspect) the bridge structure, making sure it’s safe and functioning. Between 1995 and 1999, more roadway was added, making the bridge two lanes (车道)in each     7     (direct). In the next few years, a new tunnel (隧道)will be added to one of the     8     (original).

To some, the bridge is beautiful, inspiring and a symbol of       9     people can do. But to people such as Johnson, the bridge is     10     (simple)something necessary. It’s for someone who might need to go to the doctor’s office, buy school supplies or visit a friend.

Jiang Zhirong, 22, is from Yingcheng, Hubei Province. Last year, she passed the examination for upgrading from a junior college student to a university student, and     1     (admit) as an undergraduate at Hubei Minzu University.

As she was the only one in her class     2     succeeded in passing the exam, Jiang’s teacher and classmates advised her not to suspend her schooling, but she was     3     (determine) because she “wanted to give back to society”.

As a member of the Plan of the 2022 College Students Volunteer Service to Western Regions, Jiang has now worked in Hubei’s Laifeng County, at the junction (交界处) of three     4     (province), Hubei, Hunan and Chongqing.

In the     5     (two) year of her junior high school studies, Jiang’s father passed away. Her mother was unable to take care of herself because she suffered from     6     illness and her grandmother later succumbed (被压垮) to Alzheimer’s.

A kind-hearted man called Nie Chunhua gave support towards Jiang’s mother living in a welfare home.     8     a heart full of gratitude, Jiang studied very hard in technical secondary school and college, until she passed the undergraduate upgrading exam and suspended her schooling.

Speaking of her     9     (decide), Jiang said, “When I was asked whether I would regret     10     (suspend) school to volunteer in the western regions, I was certain I would never.”

Many of us     1    ( work) as volunteers before. Some have experience as mechanics, repairing and maintaining machines. Others are experienced medical workers    2     have volunteered to help those with disabilities. This summer, one Chinese volunteer, Liu Fei, will serve     3     a management consultant for AIDS projects in an African country. Liu’s impression of the country is that it is developing rapidly but suffers from much     4    ( stable) and violence. Many people there have contracted AIDS, which means Liu’s work with a local organization engaging in AIDS prevention will surely be     5    ( challenge). Liu’s path to Africa was long and bumpy. Although he had met all the     6    ( requirement) for the volunteer application, his family was opposed to his choice at first. It took Liu some time to explain the importance of building a    7     ( share) future for mankind.     8     ( ultimate), his family decided to sing the same tune as Liu and respected his right     9    ( choose) his own path. Liu is looking forward to sharing his knowledge and skills with needy communities. He hopes his input can make    10     difference in distant Africa.
