Food safety is very important to humans. When you are having dinner, do you eat up all the food on your plate or have some leftover? According to the UN, 1. 3 billion tons of food is wasted around the world every year. That’s about one-third of all food produced each year.
We make a survey in 34 countries to see how much food is wasted in different countries. For example, the UAE wastes the most food, with each person wasting about 1, 000 kilos every year on average. However, some countries have worked hard to use their food resources wisely. France wastes the least amount of food, according to the survey.
France was the first country to pass laws that stop food waste. It’s not allowed to throw away fresh food. Another law forces French restaurants to provide bags for people’s leftovers.
China ranked 23rd for food waste in the survey. China’s food waste is around 18 million tons every year, enough to feed up to 50 million people for one year. Facing this situation, China has been working hard to reduce food waste. Since early 2013, a movement to prevent food waste called “empty plate” has begun. It has become popular among both government officials and general public.

Here are four of the eight most amazing Chinese food cities I’ve come across so far. The list is in no particular order.
1. Chengdu, Sichuan Province
Crowned as Asia’s first UNESCO City of Gastronomy(美食学) in 2010, Chengdu is best-known for its fiery hot pot and spicy dishes, which are characterized by the use of Sichuan pepper and are usually layered with salty, sour and sweet flavors. There are also dishes that aren’t spicy at all, such as beer-braised duck.
Hot pot is as ubiquitous in the city as the smell of chili. At Zigong Delicious Hotpot, the house specialty(招牌菜) tiaoshui wa is a cauldron(大锅) of fiery chili(辣椒) to which vegetables, noodles or other meats can be added.
For a real taste of Sichuan’s signature(招牌)pepper, hua jiao, spend a morning at the Chengdu Spice Market where the locals sell and buy it by the sack.
2. Lanzhou, Gansu Province
Synonymous in the minds of food-lovers with hand-pulled beef noodles, Lanzhou also has one of the liveliest street food night markets in China.
Just west of the city center, the buzzing Zhengning Road bazaar(集市)houses more than 100 street food stalls. Available is a broad selection of hot and cold dishes with emphasis on local Hui cuisine.
No trip to Lanzhou is complete without feasting on noodles at Wumule Penhui, the 2012 winners of Lanzhou’s annual pulled noodle competition. The halal restaurant makes noodles spicy enough to satisfy even the most hardened heat-seekers.
3. Guangzhou, Guangdong Province
The birthplace of Cantonese food, Guangzhou is thought by many as the best place to eat in China. The city of 12 million has a passionate food culture, with equal excitement reserved for the opening of a hole-in-the-wall congee joint(粥店)and a high-end restaurant.
The local cuisine is characterized by fresh clean flavors(口味), seafood, barbecued meats and the wonderful tradition of yum cha, which is tea drinking accompanied by dumplings and small dishes.
Congee is the way locals love to start their day, and one of the most popular vendors is Ru Xuan Sha Guo Zhou. Here, one can get a bowl of signature seafood congee any hour of the day.
Roast meats are Bing Sheng’s most popular order—their roast goose is marinated(腌制)with five-spice, boiled, air-dried, then roasted by a flame oven to give a crisp skin.
For something more home style and removed from the madness of downtown, head to Ji Cun for steamed chicken and simple farmer-style dishes.
4. Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province
This ancient canal city is home to huangjiu, an amber-colored rice wine that’s important in Chinese cooking.
Open since 1894, the dining chain is known by almost every Chinese for its appearance in early 20th century novels by Chinese literati Lu Xun.
Xianheng’s delicacies(佳肴)include crispy-skinned chicken, smoked red dates in rice wine, beans flavored with fennel(茴香), and crispy bream in rice wine.
Fried fermented(发酵的)tofu is also a local specialty, which is available all over town at small street stalls including one just outside Xianheng.

What I had hoped to be a romantic anniversary dinner for my wife Gladys and me turned out to be a very disappointing dining experience. I began to have my doubts the moment we walked inside. The dining room itself was clean, but the decoration was far too gaudy (花哨的) for my tastes. Multicolored images of clowns and large cartoon animals were stuck on almost every single wall. The tables were a bright lime green (橙绿色). It certainly did not look like the romantic restaurant that I was hoping for, but I am not one to judge a book by its cover.
Gladys and I stood for what seemed like an hour waiting to be seated, but not a single employee even glanced at our way. Finally, we decided to just locate a table on our own. Although the restaurant was fairly crowded, we were able to find a table in the back. We took our seats and waited for a member of the wait staff to bring us menus.
An unbearable amount of time passed and there was still no sign of a waiter or waitress. Perhaps having noticed our frustration, a customer sitting at the table next to us informed us that there were no waiters. Instead, we had to place our orders at the front of the restaurant and then bring our own food back to the table.
No waiters? Who came up with this concept? What is the purpose of dining out if you have to get up and serve yourself? I was about to storm out, but my wife calmed me down.
Eventually, Gladys volunteered to get the food for us. Somehow, I did manage to eat six of the hamburgers, but the seventh proved far too greasy (油腻的) for my liking. The chocolate milk shake that they offered as dessert was acceptable, but the cup it came in was very small.
Overall, The BurgerShack’s combination of dreadful decoration, non-existence service, and disappointing food makes it a place to avoid. I certainly hope we will find a better place to celebrate our 51st anniversary next year!

This season runs from 8:00 am today and will end in 20 days, down from the usual 12 weeks, with a bag limit of five listed game ducks per day.
Wayne Shields grows leafy greens on the Mornington Peninsula and he said the decision to reduce the duck hunting season would take its toll on farmers. “The wood ducks are the ones causing all of the damage; the black ducks are no problem around here. The wood ducks come in at night and they just clean me out completely and they’ve done it a number of times over a number of years,” he said.
Mr. Shields and his wife, Natasha, run Peninsula Fresh Organics and he said there was nothing he could do to stop the invasion (入侵). “I nearly went broke a few years ago. Back then I was planting 10,000 lettuce (生菜) a week and they would quite happily eat 10,000 lettuce a week.” Due to the damage caused by the wood ducks, Mr. Shields said there should be a year-round open season on the wood ducks and farmers should be allowed to shoot birds.
Professor Richard Kingsford, Director of the Centre for Ecosystem Science at UNSW, said although the wood ducks ate crops, extending the duck season may not achieve what farmers wanted. He is calling on the government to invest more in research to address the threat certain species of waterbirds caused for some farmers, so other nonlethal (非致命的) ways to destroy the birds can be found.

Everybody enjoys wearing warm fashionable sweaters, but they never realize how much harm they have done to the environment . Studies suggest that 70 percent of the damage to the grasslands is due to overgrazing(过度放牧).Because of that, tile balance of nature is broken, extreme weather occurs frequently, species are under serious threat, and finally grasslands are becoming desert gradually. The major real cause driving this activity is that human beings demand for cheaper wool to make fashionable clothing.
What you might not know is that the natural fibers for making clothes are often taken from trees in ancient forests or other plants such as bamboo and cotton . This means that the clothes we buy and wear are contributing directly to destroying forests and habitats. In fact, cotton is by no means a fully environmentally friendly crops on the planet. For a start, it uses so much water to. produce, which leads to the freshwater shortage across the globe. It can take 2,700 liters of water to make just one cotton T-shirt. Additionally, growing cotton requires high levels of pesticide and other dangerous chemicals that often pollute waterways and soil. As for man-made fibers, the damage done by them is far worse than other materials.
In recent years, retailers (零售商)have increased the number of fashion collections each season even-each month or week. Throwaway culture is known as "fast fashion" due to low prices . Every year, 100 billion new garments made from new fibers are produced, many of which soon end up in landfill(垃圾填埋场).A dress might cost a few pounds for the consumer, but there is a hidden cost to the wider environment including ecosystems and other species.
1. According to the passage, the real destroyer on the grasslands is ___.A.overgrazing | B.unbalanced nature |
C.human beings’ need | D.change of weather |
A.The cotton fiber. | B.The tree fiber. |
C.The man-made fiber. | D.The bamboo fiber. |
