Singles Day falls on every November 11th, and as the name suggests, this relatively new holiday is one only for people who are still living single lives. I was a bit surprised when I googled ‘Singles Day’ on the Internet, to find that China is the only country in the world that has set aside a special day for singles to celebrate their lives.
*The Origin of Singles Day
An old story goes that once there were four single men, leading very boring lives. None of them were married, or had lovers, or did anything exciting. They just sat around all day and played Mahjong.
One day they played Mahjong from 11 in the morning until 11 at night. During the game, no matter who won, the winning card was always the ‘four columns’ card (the card shows four independent, parallel (并行) columns in two lines). Even more of a coincidence (巧合), it was Nov 11, or 11/11. In order to remember the day, they called it Singles Day.
*University culture
Singles Day was first celebrated at various universities in Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu Province during the 1990s. It got the name Singles Day because the date consists of four “ones”. These college students have since graduated, and carried their university tradition into society, Singles Day is now a special day for all fashionable youths.
*______
The main way to celebrate Singles Day is to have dinner with your single friends, but it’s important that each person go Dutch to show their independence. People also hold “blind date” parties trying to say goodbye to their single lives.
For breakfast on Singles Day, singles often eat four youtiao representing the four “one” in “11. 11” and one baozi representing the middle dot.
Many singles also choose to say goodbye to their single lives on this day. Many attend “blind date” parties and many people choose to marry on this day. In addition to meaning “single”, the four “ones” of the date can also mean “only one” as in “the only one for me”, some people will use this date and this meaning to tell their special someone that they are the only “one” in their heart.

Peking opera, known as China’s national opera, is a combination of music, dance and art and is widely regarded as a full expression of Chinese culture. Today, this art form is facing the danger of extinction as the younger generation is mostly interested in pop culture.
A Peking opera project for primary and secondary schools was launched by China’s Ministry of Education. But it has met with a cold reaction from the public. More than half of the 1, 000 respondents from ten big cities expressed doubts about the practical meaning of the project in the survey conducted by the Social Survey Institute of China.
The project plans to add 15 Peking opera pieces into music courses in 200 schools in ten provinces. The pilot programs will last from March to July next year. At present, teaching materials and video tapes are still in production, China News Service reported. The Ministry of Education hopes that the promotional course can help students better appreciate Chinese culture and cultivate a love for the mother country.
The surveyed people do recognize Peking opera as a comprehensive (综合性的) art form and a representative of the traditional culture. They also understand the purpose of the educational project. However, they wonder whether it is necessary for every student to learn to sing Peking opera, when they are already stressed from endless exams. In fact, most music teachers themselves know little about this ancient art form, and thus are not confident in arousing (激起) students’ Interest in its slow pace and abstruse (深奥的) lyrics.

As far as the Internet being a part of our lives, well, that train has left the station. There is no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure in a young group: teenagers.
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week only online may cause high blood pressure, which makes their hearts and blood vessels(血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases the risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and other diseases.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers said the study was the first to connect heavy Web use with high blood pressure.
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. She says, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn’t ruin(毁坏) us.” Ms. Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to stop to have a rest regular from their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents shouldn’t let their children use the Internet for more than two hours a day, five days a week.

There are three basic modes of physical exercise: flexibility exercise helps the human body in general or its part in particular to be able to reach farther and bend better; aerobic exercise helps the body work hard for a long time; anaerobic exercise makes the arms and legs stronger.
It has long been known that exercise is not only good for your body, but also for your mind. According to researchers, gymnasts are more likely to be emotionally stable, football players the most outgoing and swimmers the happiest.
The psychological study, which was carried out by experts, also revealed that sports can also offer clues to a person’s attitude to charity, reading habits and even their voting intentions. Boxers, for example, are most likely to focus on material possessions in life. Meanwhile, runners tend to be outgoing people who love being the centre of attention. Walkers, a group that includes those who enjoy wandering and cross-country races, are least concerned about other people and like doing things by themselves without interruption from others. Those who play chess are confident when they face challenges and trouble. Those who swim tend to be tidy and charitable. However, according to Mind Lab, 61 percent of adults are fond of helping others regardless of their choice of sports.

But habitat loss and climate change, as well as infectious diseases, are reducing bats’ ability to do their job. A new study adds another item to the list: wildfires. But not too many — too few.
In California’s Sierra Nevada ecosystem, bats have adapted to occasional wildfires. But fire-prevention policies have kept some areas unburned for unusually long periods, resulting in denser (更稠密的) forests with thicker undergrowth. “We wanted to see how these changes in how fires are burning might be influencing bat biodiversity,” says Zack Steel, who conducted the research.
Steel and his colleagues used microphones to count bats by recording their distinctive echolocation (回声定位) over four years at six sites in the Sierra Nevada. Three of the areas had recently endured fires, and three remained unburned.
Seventeen bat species call these forests home. The study revealed that eight of them tended to frequent the unburned patches, whereas 11 used the burned areas (some species visited both). “We expected to see Group A (the more open-habitat-adapted-species) benefiting from fire and Group B (the more clutter-adapted species) being negatively affected by fire, preferring the unburned areas,” Steel says. “But even some of those species were occurring more often in burned areas.”
“When there’s lots of variation in habitat after a fire, many species benefit in different ways,” says University of Connecticut biologist Andrew Stillman, “On the whole, the community (群体) becomes more diverse, and that’s a good thing for the landscape.”
Putting out wildfires early leads to some species losing out on food and resources.
“Fire is a natural part of the ecosystem, and many animals require the disturbance from fire to create the types of habitat that they need,” Stillman adds. “It demonstrates another negative consequence of keeping wildfire away from fire-adapted forests in California.”
1. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?A.Too few bat species have survived. | B.Too few wildfires have occurred. |
C.Too few items influence bats’ community. | D.Too few insects are eaten by bats. |
A.Its method. | B.Its result. | C.Its process. | D.Its focus. |

C.To bring forest protection into public attention. |
