To fully appreciate Australian cuisine, you have to consider the unique nature of its wildlife and geography. For one thing, there are the wide plains in the interior of the country, which are home to millions of grazing animals. For another, there is Australia’s long coastline, which is next to all the riches of the sea. It is no wonder then that much of Australian cuisine centres around red meat and seafood.
One of the most popular red meats in Australia is also unique to the continent: kangaroo. This may seem strange as the kangaroo is a national symbol of Australia. However, in recent years, kangaroos have increased in number to around 45 million. These kangaroos wander onto the roads and into cities, making trouble. Their increased numbers have also harmed plants and other wildlife. As a consequence, the government is encouraging people to use these animals as food, and kangaroo has become one of the most popular items on the Australian dinner table.
As for seafood, many of the first Europeans who came to Australia loved the sea. Perhaps this is one reason why so many Australians live near the coast. Since the coastline is so long, each region has its own dishes that are related to the seafood found in its waters. The list of seafood available at the local fish market is like a tour of the coast: salmon, prawns, oysters, tuna, shark, crab, and many more. However, if you want to really take in the full experience, you should go to the fish market in Sydney early in the morning and see the fish being prepared for sale. Better yet, you can sign up to go deep-sea fishing.
But then, how is all this food cooked? Perhaps the favourite way of cooking food in Australia is the barbecue, or “barbie”. Given the fine weather, Australians love to eat outside. Casual friendliness is the key to such meals. It is a time for friends and relatives to get together and have fun. Even strangers passing through will be offered a seat, a cold drink, and something off the grill. Often these barbecues feature a “mixed grill”, which means cooking all kinds of meat, seafood, and vegetables. So, at an Australian barbecue, you don’t have to eat kangaroo—or even eat meat at all—if you don’t want to.
Beyond this, what is Australian cooking? As Australia is a diverse country with people from many nations, Australian cooking now has flavors and cuisines from around the globe. No matter who you are and no matter what cuisine interests you, you are always sure to find a warm welcome and a full plate waiting for you in Australia.

As I entered the first cave and looked up at the feitian—an imagined flying god in Buddhist art, I wondered how many hundreds of thousands of others, from near and far, have looked at the same great paintings and statues.
Sometime between the 4th and 14th century, Mogao was an important Buddhist center connecting East Asia and South Asia. Hundreds of caves were carved into a cliff face running along the Daquan River. Located on the ancient Silk Road, one of the great trade routes in ancient times, it created an environment of artistic and cultural exchange between the different cultures.
My personal adventure to Dunhuang had taken me, by way of train and bus, from Xining in Qinghai Province to Lanzhou in Gansu Province, and through the Jiayu Pass. From there, I continued on through Yumen Pass, also known as the Jade Gate, and crossed the Gobi Desert to find this small and sleepy desert town, and to see these caves for myself.
As I explored the temples,I was amazed by the vividness (生动性) of the paintings and statues. It was almost as though they were painted or carved the day before. I had discovered the reason why people travel.
There are more than 2,000 coloured statues that were carved 1,500 years ago. More than 1,400statues are well-protected so they can still be appreciated. During the thousand years of artistic activity, the style of the wall paintings and statues changed. The early caves show greater Indian and Western influences, while during the Tang Dynasty the influences of Chinese painting styles became noticeable.
Today, the Mogao Caves stand out from the desert like a shinning pearl on the Silk Road.

The Airwrap(卷发棒) is the much anticipated follow-up to the Supersonic hairdryer which proved a huge hit despite the £299 cost. This new gadget promises to be a whole new way to create waves and smooth blow-dries, but the price alone is enough to make your hair curl, coming in at an even heftier £399. So what, exactly, is your money buying you? Can there really be THAT different a way to curl your hair?
Well, this being Dyson, the answer is yes. It’s radically different from your typical curling irons that involve you physically winding your hair around a scorching-hot barrel. The new Airwrap technology uses jets of air to attract your hair onto the curling barrel, automatically wrapping it and shaping it. All you have to do is place a section of hair close to the styler, and it’ll wind itself around the styler by a (literally) invisible force.
If you’re a beauty geek, you might like to know that force has a name— the Coanda Effect. This occurs when a high speed jet of air flows across a surface and the difference in pressure makes the air flow (and any hair that gets caught up in its wake) attach itself to that surface. Dyson says the Coanda effect enables you to shape your hair at far lower temperatures than regular styling, which translates into less damage. Like the Supersonic dryer, the Air wrap employs “intelligent heat control”, measuring the temperature up to 40 times a second to ensure the heat never reaches the point where your hair is frazzled to the point of no return.
The Airwrap comes with different attachments, depending on the style you want to achieve. You can either go for a wavy look with the curling barrel or use the Coanda effect to guide your hair onto the brush attachment, replicating a salon style blow dry without the arm ache.
“Once my hair was wrapped in place and had been sufficiently whooshed for a few seconds, I hit the cool button to set the style, then slid the styler out of my hair. I felt shocked, proud, ecstatic, disbelieving. It was kind of like childbirth without the mess.” Then again, many people were initially sceptical about the idea of coughing up nearly £300 for a hairdryer, yet the Supersonic has blown away all the doubters. Who’s to say the Airwrap won’t be our new best curl friend?
The Dyson Airwrap is available at Dyson online and in Dyson stores.

A key component of the curriculum is gratitude, where students develop four habits that take up just 21 minutes each day through exercises and learn to be thankful for not what they may want, but what makes them happy right now. And the four happiness habits are listed.
Two minutes of emailing
Write a two-minute maximum email each day praising or thanking a different person in your life. Not only do you often receive positive emails back, but this habit significantly increases your social connection, which is the greatest predictor of long-term happiness and is also as predictive of how long you will live as obesity or high blood pressure.
Fifteen minutes of movement
Fifteen minutes of movement each day can be the equal of taking an antidepressant, and acts as a gateway drug because people who do this start adding on entire groups of positive habits.
Two minutes of meditation(冥想)
Two minutes of meditation-simply watching your breath go in and out -improves accuracy on tasks by 10 percent, significantly reduces stress, improves sleep and raises engagement scores.
Two minutes of journal
Two minutes of journal about a positive, meaningful experience each day can significantly decrease pain symptoms and stress and increase the amount of meaning you feel in your life. Simply think of one meaningful event that happened over the past 24 hours and then on a sheet of paper, write down some details you can remember, which is called “Doubler”. Your brain struggles to tell the difference between visualization and actual experience, so you are doubling a meaningful event each day.
1. What does the new curriculum focus on?A.Being grateful. | B.Being energetic. | C.Physical health. | D.Interpersonal relationship. |
A.Two minutes of journal. | B.Two minutes of emailing. |
C.Two minutes of meditation. | D.Fifteen minutes of movement. |

This means that most people will be watching the most blockbusters (大片) such as Dune and the fourth Matrix film, not in cinemas, but on the small screen.
However, it’s not just about the pandemic. COVID has merely accelerated existing trends, because film streaming and the role of Big Tech in the film industry is shaking up the entire economics of filmmaking.
Today, the biggest players in the film industry are streaming services. There’s Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, and US telecoms company AT&T, which owns Warner, has its own streaming service in the US called HBO Max, which is expected to launch worldwide this year.
And this changes everything. For instance, though Hollywood has always had some creative accounting practices, it now seems completely reasonable that films do not have to make a profit in order to be successful. Why? Because instead of worrying about selling tickets to individual films, these companies are much more interested in maintaining your monthly subscription (订阅) fee, with their investments paying off not in the short term at the box office, but in the long run.
Streaming is also changing the form of what we watch. For instance, when Disney decided to make Star Wars spin-off (周边产品) The Mandalorian, it made it as an eight-part TV show, not a movie. This wasn’t a trick to save money. But it’s because the more important thing for streaming services is increasing the time you’ve spent watching. If you watch as the show is released week-by-week, you’ll have to keep subscribing for two whole months in order to follow it through to its conclusion.
Perhaps the strangest transformation though is the business models behind the streaming services. For everyone aside from Netflix, film and TV is just a valuable form of advertisement for where they really make their money.
The only reason Apple has a streaming service is because it’s a source of recurring (循环的) interests. Over time a monthly fee is more valuable than a one-off iPhone purchase, and is more likely to lock you into another iPhone purchase in the future, if they can watch Apple TV on it.
Disney actually makes most of its money from the selling of its resort holiday packages to its Disney theme parks. What Disney really wants you to do is book a pricey trip to Disney World in Florida. Disney+ is really about making your kids fall in love with their characters.
And what about Amazon? It is all about Amazon Prime, the company’s subscription service that bundles (免费附送) its streaming offerings with its other products and services, such as free shipping on goods. Once the company had hooked you in with the promise of some blockbuster films and TV shows… Well, you’ll suddenly find yourself buying a lot more from Amazon too.
