Summertime is lots of fun, but when it’s too hot it can instead be very uncomfortable and dangerous.

When the temperature rose to 38°C in Fort Worth Texas several years ago it was especially difficult for those who didn’t have an air conditioner (空调). 95-year-old World War I soldier Julius Hatley was one of those who have to stand the burning heat. His air conditioner had broken and he was completely burning up.

Still, even at 95, he was doing everything he could to get by without help. Julius tried spending time under the trees in his garden—but at one point, he just couldn’t take it any more. So he took action. Not knowing what else to do about the extreme heat, 95-year-old Hatley called his local Fort Worth, Texas police department.

William Margolis, was the officer on duty that day. He knew this was a common 911 call. For the police, Hatley’s request was not an urgent call because there were more important and bigger event waiting for them to do. Still, Margolis and his partner Christopher Weir managed to spare time for a visit.

When they got there around 8:30 am, they found his house was 38°C to 39°C already. And the temperature was still rising. After checking the room for a little while, Margolis and Weir quickly discovered that both Hatley’s central air conditioning and window unit were broken, leaving the man to suffer alone.

The two men didn’t have a solution to Hatley’s problem right then, but they promised they would find it out. It didn’t take long, however, for Margolis to realize that he just couldn’t shake the image of the poor, old man out of his head . He requested that he and Weir make a stop at a shop, where they could buy Hatley a new air conditioner themselves.

When Anne Glancey, a retired school teacher, received notice from the city of Hamilton Township that she would be fined up to $3,000 per day for code violations (违规) and repairs that needed to be made to her home, she didn't know what to do. She did not have the money to pay for the repairs, and she had no family or friends she could ask for help.

The only contact she regularly made with others was with her neighbors of five years, Adam and Kristin Polhemus. Anne showed the-letter to them which explained that she needed to scrape (刮) and paint her house, remove the abandoned and rusted car in her yard, and cut the grass. These were three violations in total, each with a fine of no more than $1 ,000, per day, per violation. Anne had grown up in the house, and the letter made her upset. She didn't know what she was going to do and she couldn't do this herself. “Anne, we'll help you get this fixed,”Adam said.

Kristin posted a call for help and volunteers to help make repairs and paint Anne's house on Facebook. Her post read as follows:

Hamilton area friends! Are you free for a few hours this weekend? We need you! Adam and I could use your help for some painting at the home of our elderly neighbor, Anne. As you know, she received a heavy fine and she's on a deadline to scrape and repaint her home to avoid the fine. She's limited in funds and the physical ability to do the work, and we'd love nothing more than to show her we care. We really do need your help; we only have a few people right now and we're hoping for about 20 volunteers to make this happen. THANK YOU!

Anne, Adam and Kristin were overjoyed at the response.

My husband Frank and I lived a frugal (节俭的) life, carrying lunch to work, having no vacations, and staying in. But when it came to our fifteenth wedding anniversary, we decided to “splurge (挥霍)” this one time.

At last, we walked into a beautiful Italian restaurant for a nice dinner. We ordered wonderful food and even a glass of wine each. Halfway through our very delicious dinner, Frank and I noticed the two diners next to us seemed to be looking for something under their table and all around. The elegantly dressed woman appeared to be in her late seventies, and her much younger male companion looked like her son. The woman kept touching her ear.

I asked whether she had lost an earring. The woman shook her head and looked worried. “My hearing aid,” she said. “My son finally convinced me to buy it this week, it is so expensive.” She then added that her son’s eyesight was better than hers but he couldn’t find it, either.

No waiters seemed to be helpful, as they were very busy. And the other diners seemed unaware of the woman’s trouble. Frank stood up immediately. “Let me try,” he offered. “Maybe a fresh pair of eyes will find it.” The woman said that it was very small and had the same color as the floor, adding she didn’t want to bother Frank. “That’s okay, I’ll try.” Frank said. Then he bent down and moved a few inches at a time, with his eyes and hands sweeping back and forth.

The woman sat down slowly. Her son kept his eyes focused while Frank’s feet moved back and forth under the table. Meanwhile, I stood by their table, running my hand over the tablecloth, shifting the plates, etc.

“Thanks,” the woman said. “But I’m afraid it’s lost forever. Your dinner’s getting cold. Please don’t worry.” I saw tears forming in her eyes. Soon, her son sank back into his chair, too. But Frank kept looking until one of them thanked him again, and he finally gave up and sat down to eat. Ten minutes later, as we finished our dinner, the mother and son were drinking coffee, silent “I’ll take one more look.” Frank said.

The Overturned Bins

I weaved my cart around table after table of hungry customers. “Char siu bao (叉烧包),” I called out. “Barbecue pork buns!”

It was Saturday morning—the height of the yum cha (brunch) rush-and everyone in the neighborhood knew that Grandma Wu’s restaurant was the place to go for the warmest tea and the freshest dim sum.

Grandma’s array (大量) of shareable Chinese dishes was irresistible, and a line of customers always formed out the door.Knowing I wanted to be part of the excitement, my parents agreed to let me help at the restaurant on weekends.

The yummy sweet scent of the barbecue pork-filled bao followed me around the room, and it wasn’t long before I was handing out the last bamboo steamer basket and marking down the order on a customer’s stamp card. With my cart now empty, I was free to enjoy some of Grandma’s cooking myself.

l took my break at the tiny table in the alley behind the restaurant. I poured myself some tea and peeled the little square of paper off the bottom of my bao. But just as I was about to take my first bite, I noticed something odd.Our garbage bins had been knocked over!

How could those have fallen? I wondered.Trash and half-eaten dim sum littered the ground. After devouring (狼吞虎咽) my treats, I found my dad inside. We put on some plastic gloves and quickly picked up the mess. When we were finished,we washed our hands, and I headed back into the restaurant to help with the rest of the rush.

l forgot all about the mystery of the knocked-over bins until the last customer had left. I was about to follow Dad to take the trash out to the alley. “KABOOM!”Upon hearing the loud noise, we rushed out and found that the garbage bins had tipped over again!

Could it have been the wind? As we cleaned up for a second time, I looked at the darkening sky. A storm was heading our way, but the tree branches were barely moving. So what had caused the bins to fall over?
