Get rid of mosquitoes, but how?

Almost everyone who spends time outdoors has experienced mosquitoes. These bloodsucking insects give itchy bites and can spread disease. But how can you avoid them and protect yourself?

Jessica Damiano is a gardening expert. In a recent story, Damiano said the best control is     1    . And she gave suggestions on how to     2     mosquito populations.

It may seem difficult to avoid mosquitoes, as most of the areas in the world are     3     populated with them. People who live near     4     of water, such as lakeside, may experience more mosquitoes. But there are several measures you can take to reduce their numbers.

Mosquitoes need less than a centimeter of water to lay eggs. A female can lay hundreds of eggs at a time. So, check your     5     to see if there is anywhere that collects water. Water can easily collect in small     6     —a child’s toy, a trash can lid, or a cooking pot.

Even if the amount of standing water seems small,     7     it. Make holes in the bottoms of containers that can hold     8     water. Other standing water such as in ponds and bird baths can be     9     with chemicals.

There are other things you can do to protect yourself. Put screens in your doors and windows or keep them closed. And cut down on time spent outdoors between the early evening and the early morning. Mosquitoes are most     10     during that time.

How to tell if you’re living with ‘quiet stress’

The term “quiet stress” is gathering pace among experts. According to them, it’s an often     1     form of the more widely known version, which is characterized by visible     2    : swearing, shouting, and anger.

“We quiet    3     our stress within: we don’t speak up about how we actually feel, because of which we become inactive. We stay in unhappy relationships and     4     jobs. We feel overwhelmed, yet ignore important tasks. Quiet stress creates a form of emotional paralysis (麻痹) that keeps us    5     in unhappy situations,” says Jillian Lavender, who runs the London Meditation Centre.

Cary Cooper, a professor of psychology and health at the University of Manchester, compares the effects of quiet stress to shrapnel(散弹):“You can learn to     6     your stress responses, but eventually the stress will emerge: as well as an immune system that stops working well, you may withdraw socially, isolate yourself and begin to engage in unhealthy     7     drinking too much. Despite getting a bad reputation over the years, expressing anger of frustration is far healthier than smiling     8     while feeling quietly stressed.

A recent study from Stanford University in the US backs this theory up. The researchers found that seeing stress as a helpful part of dealing with life’s challenges, rather than as something to be avoided, was associated with better health,     9    wellbeing and productivity at work.

“Stress isn’t always harmful,” said Kelly McGonigal, a business school lecturer at Stanford who worked on the study. “Once you     10     that going through stress makes you better at it, it can be easier to face each new challenge.”

Perfect Fashion by Numbers

It’s the disadvantage of online clothes shopping. You come across a shirt you simply must have only to find that what you receive doesn’t fit despite being in your size. How can you order clothes with     1     when you can’t try them on?

A new wave of start-ups are finding clever ways to     2     the problem. One of them wants to     3     our system for sizing clothes. “We think it’s kind of ridiculous that despite all of us coming in so many different shapes and sizes, we’re     4     with small, medium and large,” says Matt Hornbuckle, co-founder of Stantt, a New Jersey-based firm that manufactures men’s shirts to fit 70 sets of body measurements.

To arrive at these, Hornbuckle hired another company to analyse 200,000 measurements of men’s bodies, looking for correlations. It found that three numbers—chest size, waist and sleeve length-are enough to predict which of those 70     5     would best fit someone. Stantt’s first shirts, priced at $98, will ship in May. The company’s recent Kickstarter campaign raised $120,000 and collected pre-orders for around 1000 shirts—a sign, Hornbuckle says, that customers are eager for     6    . “The retail store itself, and how they operate, is becoming out of date,” he says.

Another start-up, Arden reed, based in New York, wants to take this     7     approach a step further with its suits. Six months ago, the company began sizing customers using a remodelled truck equipped with a 3D body scanner. It has 14 Kinect sensors that record around 1.5 million body contour (外形,轮廓) points in a process lasting10 minutes. The readings are turned into measurements for the     8     to be outsourced to producers, and customers receive their suit six weeks later for between $500 and $1500. They can order more in the same size online.

The scanner has     9     to Boston and Washington DC, and will make its first appearance in Miami this year. “The truck concept allows us not to be     10     to a store,” says Carlos Solorio, Arden Reed’s co-founder. Stantt and Arden Reed now want to expand their range to include women’s clothing.

The ability of the herd mentality(从众心理)to increase people’s chances of liking or believing something may help explain a wide variety of phenomena. Aral (A managerial economist at the Massachusetts institute of technology) says, from housing     1     to gold prices and from political polls to restaurant reviews, the     2     that other people like something has a powerful ability to make people like it themselves.

The new study     3     how simple it would be for companies to control reviews of their products by simply adding a few positive     4     of their own early reviews in the process, Aral adds.

It found that effects were strongest when stories were about politics, business and cultures than for fun or lifestyle pieces. In situations where there are more     5     news reviews, you have to be a little more cautious about interpreting likes and dislikes.

“Think twice before you trust, how many likes something has,” he adds. “That’s something you have to     6     with a grain of salt (持怀疑态度).” And it’s a situation many online users     7     on a daily basis.

Aral recently went onYelp.com to review a restaurant with a plan to give it three out of five stars, but when he got to the     8    , he was shown how other people describe the same place and those reviews include someone with five stars. Seeing those positive reviews made him think twice about his own     9     average opinion.

“A woman     10     how great it is, how great her great prices are and how the lemon sauce is so great,” he says. “Maybe it’s not such a good idea to say some rating right before you make your own.”
