The Beijing Winter Olympics is a great success. On the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-speed train, the crew (乘务组) welcome passengers from different countries in different languages, such as “Hello!”, “Bonjour!”, “Guten Tag!”, “Zdravstvuyte!” and so on. With their good service, passengers can make their trips happy and warm.
The Bejing Zhangiakou High-speed railway plays a very important part in many aspects. It connects the three main hosting places (Beijing, Yanqing and Chongli) together. It shortens the travel time between Beijing and Chongli from more than three hours to just one hour. The trains are well designed and have many advantages, some of which are as follows:
Smart operations
Some of the trains along the Beijing-Zhangjiakou railway line are smart enough to drive by themselves! More than 2,700 sensors (传感器) make sure the train runs smoothly. Most importantly, the trains can run in temperatures as low as -40ºC.
Large screens
Some carriages are equipped with large screens. You can watch the Olympics live shows on it with the help of 5G technology. No matter whether you are an athlete or a reporter, you won’t miss any exciting show.
Special carriages
There are special carriages for the disabled people. It’s wider and has Braille everywhere which greatly helps the blind to read easily. There is also a barrier-free (无障碍的) toilet with an SOS button. Next to the toilet, there is also a space especially for skis.
Safe bags
A small smart card can be tied to your luggage. It connects to your phone through Bluetooth. In this way, you can always know where your luggage is. You never need to worry about losing your bags!

This kind of traffic death shouldn’t be called an accident. In Los Angeles, we seem to have accepted constant carnage (屠杀) in our streets in exchange for maximizing driver speed and convenience. The official responses to proven traffic dangers are mere gestures, if even that.
Los Angeles is a uniquely deadly city with a death rate that is four times the national average. Unsurprisingly, it’s also a city that has been designed with one thing in mind: a concept called level of service, which grades streets on how well they serve those in automobiles. To many Angelenos, that makes sense — to design our streets for car traffic, which is the way many get around the city. Unfortunately, we don’t recognize that there’s a trade-off. We can either have streets bettered for free-flowing traffic, or we can design streets for people to move around safely outside of cars.
City leaders consistently choose for the easy but deadly option. In one recent example, a resident asked the city’s Department of Transportation to block drivers from using Cochran Avenue at Venice Boulevard as a cut-through street, as they were speeding through a quiet residential neighbourhood. The department responded by suggesting a “speed awareness campaign” in which neighbours put up yard signs urging drivers to slow down.
People don’t drive based on signage, but they drive on the design of the street. The trunk roads of Los Angeles such as Venice Boulevard all need to be revised so that people are prioritized over cars. This would include narrowing travel lanes (道), building bike lanes, and banning right turns at red lights. These measures would make drivers feel like they’re in a city and not on a highway. A recent John Hopkins study says this would have substantial safety benefits.
With more than 7,500 miles of streets in the city of Los Angeles, they won’t all be rebuilt anytime soon. But with each road construction project, or each crash, we should be revising streets to make them safer for all road users.
The solution to traffic jam isn’t to make more space for cars. It’s to design the streets to be safe enough for alternatives such as biking, walking and mass transit, especially for the 50% of trips daily in Los Angeles that are less than three miles. The solution to protecting people dining outdoors isn’t crash barriers. It’s a street design that forces drivers to go slowly. The problem is carnage in the streets, and we know the solutions.
1. Why should the traffic death in Los Angeles be called “constant carnage”?A.The traffic accidents happen quite often. |
B.Too many people are killed in the traffic accidents. |
C.The drivers’ speeding is to blame for the traffic death. |
D.City leaders’ consistent choice contributes to the traffic death. |
A.Balance. | B.Guideline. | C.Conflict. | D.Resolution. |
A.To widen travel lanes. | B.To add more crosswalks. |
C.To arrange more traffic police. | D.To punish speeding drivers. |
A.Drivers first or walkers first? | B.Traffic death or constant carnage? |
C.More warning signs or safer designs? | D.More narrow lanes or speedy highways? |

China has established a competitive edge in NEVs. In 2022, China’s market share of NEVs accounted for more than 65 percent of the global total, maintaining its position as the world’s leading NEV market for eight years, China Daily reported.
Reflecting on the journey of leading Chinese electric car manufacturer (制造商) BYD, Chairman Wang Chuanfu recalled about 2003 when BYD entered into the NEV industry amid doubts and mockery, as few people back then believed in the future of NEVs. Surprisingly, within a few years, China’s NEV exports increased greatly. In 2022, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reported an impressive total export volume of 679,000 NEVs.
In the European market, Chinese brands, such as BYD and Hongqi, have entered the top 50 best-selling motor companies across Europe, The Times reported. Shu Youxing, general manager of BYD International Cooperation Division and the European Automobile Sales Division, said that the company’s pure electric buses have now hit the roads of more than 100 major European cities such as Amsterdam, London and Copenhagen, helping Europeans cut carbon emissions by over 200,000 tons.
NEVs made in China are also popular in Mexico. One local, Israel Aguilar, is deeply impressed. After nearly a year of trying out a Chinese NEV, Aguilar said he may never go back to driving his traditional petrol car, stating that the NEV offers better comfort.
“Technology is truly very important in these times, especially for a vehicle. And it has been truly extraordinary for me to handle these technologies that come from China,” Aguilar told Xinhua.
The thriving global expansion of Chinese NEVs is primarily thanks to the efforts of companies to improve their capability for innovation. One major example of this is China’s drive to become the global leader in making EV batteries, fueled by an advantage in the supply chain and raw materials such as lithium (锂) and cobalt (钴).
1. What can we learn about BYD?A.BYD exports 679, 000 NEVs each year. |
B.BYD suffered hardship in its development. |
C.BYD lost hope due to doubts and mockeries. |
D.BYD always maintains the world’s leading position. |
A.Chinese NEVs can help protect the environment. |
B.Pure electric buses have caused many road accidents. |
C.Importing Chinese NEVs is a main task for The Times. |
D.Only BYD and Hongqi have entered the European market. |
A.Satisfied. | B.Opposed. | C.Unclear. | D.Doubtful. |
A.Cooperation with partners. | B.The big overseas markets. |

This concept is not easy to understand because the words seem to have opposite meanings. How can we be individuals (个人) and be networked at the same time? You need other people for networks.
Here is what Professor Wellman means. Before the invention of the Internet and e-mail, our social networks included live interactions (互动) with relatives, neighbors, and friends. Some of the interaction was by phone, but it was still voice, person to person, in real time.
A recent research study by the Pew Internet and American Life project showed that for a lot of people, electronic interaction through the computer has replaced this person-to-person interaction. However, a lot of people interviewed for the Pew study say that’s a good thing. Why?
In the past, many people were worried that the Internet isolated us and caused us to spend too much time in the imaginary world of the computer. But the Pew study discovered that the opposite is true. The Internet connects us with more real people than expected-helpful people who can give advice on careers, medical problems, raising children, and choosing a school or college. About 60 million Americans told Pew that the Internet plays an important role in helping them make major life decisions.
Thanks to the computer, we are able to be alone and together with other people-at the same time!
1. The underlined phrase “networked individualism” probably means that by using computers people ________.A.stick to their own ways no matter what other people say |

Quick Guide on China Train Travel
If you’re looking for an affordable and comfortable way to get around China, train travel is the way to go. Getting train information and cheap train tickets has never been easier. Online train ticket booking makes it easy for travelers to look through China’s train timetable, compare train fares, and look for ticket availability. Once you’ve found a suitable train, you can book online and pick your tickets up at the train station or get them delivered to your home or hotel. Train tickets can be booked online a minimum of 35 minutes and a maximum of 60 days before departure.
How to choose train types
When you’re buying China train tickets online, you’ll notice that the journey duration differs depending on which type of train you choose. China train types can be recognized by their letter codes G, D and C trains are high-speed trains, while Z, T and K are slower or overnight trains. China’s high-speed trains run between Chinese provincial capitals and first-tier Chinese cities. G trains (high-speed trains, standing for gāotiě) are China’s bullet trains—the fastest trains with a maximum speed of 400 km/h. Tickets for these trains are the most expensive.
How to buy train tickets
Unless you can read Chinese, there are only two ways to make train reservations in China:
—Online train ticket booking with a travel agency (up to 60 days before departure).
—At the train station/local ticket agency with your passport (up to 58 days before departure).
How to read train tickets
When reading your train ticket, please take note of the Chinese characters and Pinyin printed next to your departure / arrival city. Directions (North, South, East, and West) appear in Pinyin (Bei, Nan, Dong, and Xi), not English. Please make sure you are going to the correct train station.

Doctors say the only way to keep it in check is to lose weight and eat a healthier diet. Now a new study reports that bariatric surgery, in addition to helping with weight loss, can protect the liver.
The findings were striking: Of a group of more than 1,100 patients who had fatty liver disease, those who had weight-loss surgery cut their risk of advanced liver disease, liver cancer or related death by almost 90 percent over the next ten years. Only five of the 650 patients who had bariatric surgery later developed one of those severe liver outcomes, compared with 40 of 508 patients who did not have the surgery. The weight-loss surgery patients were also at greatly lower risk for cardiovascular disease, a finding that is in line with earlier research. They were 70 percent less likely to experience a cardiac event, stroke or heart failure, or to die of heart disease, according to the study published Thursday in JAMA.
Dr. Ali Aminian, the director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Bariatric and Metabolic Institute and the study’s lead author, said that in all likelihood weight loss had stopped the disease in its tracks. “Obesity is the main driver of the fatty liver,” Dr. Aminian said, “When a patient loses weight, fat goes away from everywhere, including the liver. Weight loss is the main factor here.”
One concern in studies like these is that patients who choose weight-loss surgery may be inherently different than those who do not. They may be more motivated; they have means to afford the surgery; and they are healthy enough that doctors do not turn them away. In this case, however, Dr. Nissen, chief academic officer of the Heart and Vascular Institute, said that “even if it’s wrong by a factor of twofold, it still means the risk is greatly reduced.”
1. What’s the function of paragraph 1?A.To introduce a discovery. | B.To make a prediction. |
