Despite the deeply rooted impression that hotels are humorless, colorless spaces, there’re already many design-forward accommodation options around the world. It’s easy to see the appeal of spending your vacation in a pretty, Instagram-worthy spot that truly fits into a destination instead of feeling like it could have appeared anywhere.

But when it comes to choosing between a pre-dawn wakeup at a fashionable-neighborhood design hotel in order to get to the airport in time for my flight or just crashing at an airport chain hotel and being able to squeeze in another hour of rest, I always go for Option B.

That is even truer now that I’m attempting to travel during the pandemic. I still want convenience, but my number-one concern is cleanliness. Lots of hotels have adopted measures of disinfection amid the pandemic, but many of them take place outside of a guest’s watchful eye. Admittedly, white walls are cheap, easy, and lack personality and creativity. But these days, they are a place I can easily look for dirty spots without needing a blue light camera.

And while huge sculptures and electric pieces of Pop Art are fun to stare at in museums, they’re too much sensory overload when I’m just trying to feel at ease. Ultimately my sense of peace in a chain hotel room isn’t just about paint colors or art choices, but its uniformity. There’s always a fresh towel to pull off the rack (架子), a pad of paper and a pen on the desk, and a hot shower. When travel makes us stressed out in a city where we may not speak the local language, staying at a chain hotel means that at least something is familiar.

Not everything needs to be dramatic every day. Compared to my usual life in a tiny apartment on a loud, busy street, the quiet cool feeling of placelessness is paradise.

1. Which of the following hotel rooms will the author most likely stay in?
A.A room whose pictures can be posted on social media.
B.A room where the airport is short distance away.
C.A room which shows the typical local culture.
D.A room which is decorated with art work.
2. Why does the author prefer a chain hotel room these days?
A.It’s much cheaper than other hotels.
B.It’s more convenient than other hotels.
C.It makes the author feel at home.
D.It ensures cleanliness in some way.
3. What does the underlined word “uniformity” in the fourth paragraph mean?

A.To justify choosing chain hotels.
B.To compare different types of hotels.
C.To describe a travel experience.
D.To introduce how to choose a hotel.

【推荐2】When building houses, people used to think about not only the climate of the areas but also the building materials and the fashions for their houses. However, since electricity became more and more expensive, people began to pay much more attention to the energy they could get for their houses and the new ways they could find to protect their houses from both cold and heat.

Now, houses of an old yet new type have been widely built. In some parts of the world, people share their houses with their livestock(家禽). During cold weather, they gather their cows, goats, or other animals and keep them on the first floor of their houses. The reasons are that the animals can be protected from the cold and that they can help to heat the houses as well. The body heat given off by the animals rises to the second floor of the houses, where people live in. By sharing their houses with their livestock, people gain a source of heat.

People who live in or near cities do not usually keep livestock. However, home builders use the fact that heat rises. This natural law can be used in building houses in these areas. Instead of keeping livestock on the first floor, builders fill it with large rocks. As they are open to the sun’s rays during cold weather, these rocks take in heat. They also give off the heat, and, of course, the warm air rises into the living areas of the houses. So these houses are energy-saving.

House-building becomes a great challenge to building designers and energy engineers. They try to meet this challenge by learning from old traditions and by using modern technology. And someday in the future, people will be able to live in more energy-saving houses.

【推荐3】The way people decorate their homes can tell a lot about themselves. Obviously the way we decorate our homes is very personal. And while many of us have plenty of options, there are always people who go that little bit further. So, when it comes to minimalism (极简主义) and maximalism (极繁主义) , which one appeals to you more?

Minimalism was an art movement that started in the 1950s. Its basic principles come from a concept of less is more, reducing things to their most basic. Some people took that art style and used it as a way of living. Their houses are usually decorated in simple colors, often just black and white. For some, especially maximalists, it may seem a bit boring or depressing. However, living in this way is seen by many as more organized and practical.

Maximalism started in the 1970s. It embraces the core ideals that “more is more”. While minimalism centres around the principle of removing, if it’s easy to imagine that a maximalists’ home is piled with items—but that’s not the basic idea. It’s more about making the most of the area. Organized excess and bright colors combined with mixed patterns is what you will see in a home like this. For a minimalist, being used to more simple designs, it could be uneasy. But for those who embrace it, those things give a space personality.

The way you have your home is up to you! But, if you choose maximalism, you may need to prepare for a bit more dusting.

1. What may maximalists think of minimalists’ lifestyle?
A.Interesting.B.Practical.C.Amazing.D.Dull.
2. What can we learn about maximalism?
A.It was an art movement at first.
B.It focuses on using the space fully.
C.It is criticized for wasting resources.
D.It dates back to as early as the 1950s.
3. How is the text mainly developed?
A.By making comparison.
B.By explaining causes.
C.By giving examples.
D.By listing facts.
4. According to the passage, how will you choose between minimalism and maximalism?
A.Love me, love my dog.
B.Whatever you like depends on yourself.

D.Cut your coat according to your cloth.
