I was backpacking in Panama over Christmas in 2018, and planned to climb Volcán Barú. It is one of the only places on earth from where you can see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time.
I set off before sunrise. It was a bit cold, so I had pulled on leggings under my trousers. I’ve always felt safe travelling as a solo (单独) woman. I love the freedom. When I got to the base at 7 am, the ranger (护林员) was unwilling to let me go alone, but relented (缓和) because an American couple were behind me.
The first part of the climb was beautiful. I walked for an hour and had reached a fair height. The views were impressive, so I stopped to take a photograph. Suddenly I heard violent barking behind me.
I turned and saw two dogs running aggressively towards me. I could see their teeth looked sharp, and they looked angry. There was nowhere for me to run. I tried to keep calm, but my heart was racing. They stopped a dozen feet from where I stood and kept barking. I knew they could move fast, so I didn’t want to try to outrun them.
I kept walking, saying, “Good dog, calm down,” as evenly as possible. But I was terrified. Then one dashed up and sunk his teeth into my leg below the knee. I was shocked. He held on for a few seconds. The pain took my breath away as I felt his fangs (犬牙) in my flesh. I considered bending down to get a rock to fight him off, but was nervous in case he went for my neck or the other one launched at me.
I tried to keep walking, and he finally let go. Then he was behind me, growling (嗥叫). I kept going, my body shaking, until after about 15 minutes I was out of their sight.
When I thought it was safe, I stopped.

I was in my room, unwilling to perform on the stage of community with “my brother” Bob. He was just adopted by my parents recently.
“Grave, come here,” my mum called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Bob’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me, something she never did before Bob came to our home. I didn’t wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Bob was sealing my moth’s love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Bob was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结) as usual. Why did boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!
Soon it was time to have to set off to the community theatre. As Bob walked ahead of us to the car, my mum took me aside and said in a low voice, “It’s the first time for Bob to be on stage. Be kind to him, Honey.” l nodded but sighed. Being kind didn’t use to be hard. But after Bob moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. ‘
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Bob for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (束带) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!

I had a very peaceful childhood and I mostly ignored the fact that my elder sister was different. She got “Asperger Syndrome” (社交困难症). It turned my parents’ world upside down - but they never let it affect me. My parents worked very hard at ensuring that everything seemed pleasant and quiet for me.
It was only at the age of ten that I started to notice the differences and became aware of my social life and self-image that I had carefully built up. My sister on the other hand, was socially awkward. She could not look at people in the eye. She would whisper to herself and repeat the words she had just said. However, she was academically capable, so we attended the same primary school. Despite this, I never admitted in public that she was my sister.
However, there was one incident that changed how I viewed my sister and changed me.
Being in primary six, about to graduate, my sister and her classmates had to put on a performance, whether in a group, or on their own. Because she failed to join others, she was the only one left without a group. The school had made it a must for everyone to perform, so my sister had to do it by herself. “I’ll sing,” my sister told my parents, somewhat confidently.
Hearing that, I was completely shocked. How could my sister who was socially awkward, sing in front of the school? I knew so very well that if I allowed this to happen, she would embarrass me. “No!” I protested. My parents shot me a look and I knew my sister was going to perform anyway, and I was going to be part of the audience watching her. Silently, I wished that something would happen and I would not have to watch my sister lose face.

As a little boy, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stonewalls, the house and barn provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me. I was used to the city’s bright and neat living rooms which always seemed to whisper, “Not to be touched!”
I can still remember one afternoon when I was eight years old. Since my first visit to the farm, I’d wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stonewalls surrounding the property. My parents would never approve. The walls were old: some stones were missing, others loose and crumbling (倒塌). Still, my desire to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally, one spring afternoon, I picked up all my courage and entered the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.
“I, uh, I want to climb the stonewalls,” I said hesitantly. Everyone looked up. “Can I climb the stonewalls?” Instantly a sound went up from the women in the room. “Oh, no!” they cried in shock. “Fred, you’ll hurt yourself!” I wasn’t too disappointed; the response was just as I’d expected. But before I could leave the room, I was stopped by my grandfather’s booming voice. “Now hold on just a minute,” I heard him say, “Let the boy climb the stone-walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”

For years I took the school bus to and from school. But when I got my licence at 17, I would jump on any excuse to drive. Two weeks after I got my licence, in January 2012, we had exams at school and on the Monday I decided not to drive because I was tired. That afternoon I sat on the bus and thought, “I can’t wait to go home and take a nap.”
For almost six months, we’d had the same driver. Every morning and afternoon he would say hi and chat a little. All the kids on the bus were from our school; there were about 30 of us, aged from four to 18. I’d talk with everyone and sometimes bring the younger ones sweets. I was like the bus mother and I enjoyed it.
The younger kids sat in the front and the high schoolers sat in the back; I sat in the middle. That afternoon I was sitting next to a 13-year-old girl who was telling me about her day, when there was a heavy dull sound. I looked up to see the younger children standing and looking down towards the front of the bus. Our driver wasn’t at the wheel.
It was around 3 pm, so there was a lot of traffic and we were at a busy crossroads. The girl was sitting with jumped up and said, “You just got your licence — you have to go drive.” I replied, “What? My driving licence isn’t to drive a bus!” But she said, “You’ve got to go.”
We’d been still at a red light but the bus started to move slowly, at about 5 mph, on its own.
Everything went into slow motion. I headed to the front and yelled for someone to call the police. The driver had fallen from his seat and his feet had come off the pedals (脚踏板). He was on the ground, shaking. His whole body was blocking the front of the bus. I couldn’t reach the brakes or sit down.

I’m going to tell you a story. It’s a tale about love, heartbreak and great shame. And it’s my story. This is a story I’ve told every February since I started teaching in 1999. Its power lies, I think, in how it changes the way my students see me. Their super teacher is gone temporarily. Left behind is an 11-year-old girl whose feelings are hurt — and each of my students is very angry about the cruelty of the one who did the mean thing.
In my sixth grade, I fell madly in love. His name was David. He was tall, cute, kind of a bad boy — which I found attractive. He had no interest in me at all, but I wrote down his name all over my diary: xx loves xx in giant hearts.
So it was Valentine’s Day, elementary school style - construction paper mailboxes. Someone’s mom brought in cupcakes. Our parents bought us those variety-pack cards to send to everyone in class, with words like “Be My Honey” or “My Darling, Happy Valentine’s Day.”
It was party day. I spilled my cards onto my desk, and in many small envelopes, I saw a large one, shining like diamonds. My mind raced: "Wow-someone likes me enough to buy me this giant card. Who could it be from?” With trembling hands I tore open the envelope and drew out a sparkly image of a queen seated on her throne (宝座). The heading read, “To a Queen of a Valentine.” I was overcome with excitement. Slowly, I turned the card over, and at the bottom I saw the signature and almost fainted: David. It was all too perfect to be real. Then my eyes traveled up to the writing above his signature. In large, uneven (参差不齐的) letters, he had written me a special message.
Paragraph 1:
It read, “To the Ugliest Girl in Our Class.”, and I completely froze, tears rolling down my face.

Paragraph 2:
It was Valentine’s Day again and I held a party for my students, a party that celebrated kindness instead of cruelty.
