Last summer, my husband, Kevin, and I accepted an invitation to a camping trip. Camping sites were difficult to book. Thinking of the need for physical distance, a paddling (用桨划船) camping trip seemed great. We chose a three-night trip to Crotch Lake which is in Ontario’s North Frontenac Parklands.
Our group of 15 lived in four sites. Most people were experienced wilderness campers, but this was my first real paddling camping trip. The most difficult part for me was the planning, trying to put everything we needed into a canoe (独木舟), and being mindful of food and weather. Meal planning was quite tiring.
We put the canoe into the water near Ompah, a village at the north end of the lake. Paddling on the open water was unbelievable! As we moved, some campers on shore (岸) waved, as if welcoming us into the community. Nearly two hours passed by the time we reached our site, which Kevin and I shared with two friends. The surrounding (周围的) area of land is covered with a lot of trees. As a result, there was no chance for any walks. On the other side, this forced us to take more time to relax and enjoy our surroundings.
We chose different places to have fun each day. First, we paddled to the Whitefish Rapids, where the Mississippi River rushes into the lake. On the second day, we took a 13-kilometer round trip to the lake’s dam. And on our final morning, we snaked through the Crotch Lake Conservation Reserve, an area where there are many small islands. Being on the lake allowed us to socialize as a group while enjoying nature’s offerings.
The trip gave me a chance to immerse myself in nature. Crotch Lake was a trip I would enjoy repeating. When everyday life gets busy, memories such as this one make me relax. I can’t wait to trade my desk for a canoe and take off on another trip with friends.

There’s almost total silence around us. “I can’t believe I’m here,” the girl speaks up suddenly. I smile back at her. We are in the house where Mother Teresa lives.
The year is 1989, and I am in my final year of college. A friend needs to pick up some documents from house number 54A on AJC Bose Road, where the famous founder of the Missionaries of Charity lives. Since Mother House is not far from my college, I have offered to help.
I meet a nun at the Missionaries of Charity office. She needs a little time to put the papers together and asks me to wait in the parlor. This is where I meet Sharon, a student from Minneapolis, in the U.S. Sharon grew up reading about Mother Teresa and dreaming of meeting her some day. She had started saving, from her pocket money and earnings from summer jobs, for her trip to India. She would meet Mother Teresa and volunteer at the Missionaries of Charity when she had enough for a return ticket, she had decided.
Today, she had been granted an audience with the woman who had touched her with stories of her kindness. “This has been my dream,” she says, lowering her voice. I could feel her excitement as she spoke.
“Have you met her before?” she asks me, assuming that I am waiting for my turn to meet Mother Teresa too.
“Um, no, I haven’t had the chance.”
She looks surprised!
I have lived in this city all my life, the city that Mother Teresa made her own, where she built an institution that saved millions, giving them a decent life, or dignity as they died. This is the place from where she inspired millions across the globe to come and volunteer and donate for her cause. Here is an American girl who has traveled thousands of miles to see her. And me, I’ve been here all along.

A new flowered rug lay on the floor, and fresh white curtains that Kiku had helped Hana sew hung at the windows. The first tight buds of the flowering peach in their yard had begun to bloom, and knowing there would be callers, Hana had arranged a bunch on the table.

“There’ve been some complaints from the neighbourhood about having Japanese on this block,”
Taro caught his breath. “I see. Can you tell me who it was that complained?”
“Just some of the neighbours.”
“What is it that we have done to offend them?”
“Well, nothing specific.”
Taro looked at each of the men in turn and tried to keep his voice steady. “Gentlemen,” he began. “My wife and I looked many, many months to find a home where we might raise our daughter. When the owner said there would be no objection to our moving in here, we trusted him. It was a dream come true for us. We have already spent much time and money to make this house our home. Taro dared not stop before he finished all he wanted to say: “I should like to meet those neighbours who object to us,” he said. “Is it any of you gentlemen?”
The men looked uncomfortable. “We’re just here to represent them.”
“Then please invite them to come talk to me. If they can tell me why we aren’t desirable or why we do not deserve their respect, I shall consider their request. I am the proprietor of Takeda Dry Goods and Grocers on Seventh Street and I would be happy to have them visit my shop as well.”

Shortly after the war, my brother and I were invited to spend a few days’ holiday with an uncle who had just returned from abroad. He had rented a cottage in the country, although he hardly spent much time there. We understood the reason for this after our arrival: the cottage had no comfortable furniture in it. Many of the windows were broken and the roof leaked (漏水), making the whole house wet.
On our first evening, we sat around the fire after supper listening to the stories our uncle told of his many adventures in distant countries. I was so tired after the long train journey that I would have preferred to go to bed; but I could not bear to miss any of my uncle’s exciting stories. He was just in the middle of describing a rather terrifying experience he had once had when there was a loud crash from the bedroom above, the one where my brother and I were going to sleep.
When we got to the top of the stairs and opened the bedroom door, a strange sight met our eyes. A large part of the ceiling had fallen right on to the pillow of my bed.

One day, I read about a 13-year-old who had actually written one of my favorite comics, Legion of Super-Heroes, and I said, “I can do that too!”
A few years later, a friend and I started our own fan magazine about comics. It became the first place that often told people when their favorite comics were coming out and which writers and artists were working on them. Because of the magazine, I won awards for The Comic Reader, but more important, it got many of the people in the field to know who I was.
One day, when I was visiting DC Comics for news for my next topic, one of the editors gave me a chance to write text for his comic. Suddenly, at 16, I was getting paid to write.
I was able to pay for my college classes working as an assistant editor at DC Comics stories. Over the years, I worked as an editor and an executive (主管) for the company, finally becoming its president and publisher, until earlier this year. Now I’m back to my first love, writing comics again.
Every morning, I open my e-mail and find pages of art. When I’m tired of working on the stories, I can go online and find my readers commenting on my stories or telling me when I make mistakes!
Keep reading and writing...it’s a wonderful way to live.

My dad asked me to volunteer with our local Meals On Wheels when I was 15. We volunteered every Friday evening. We delivered hot meals to elderly people in our town who were unable to make their own food. I really enjoyed it. The experience made me think a lot more about other people and their needs.

At the age of 16, I volunteered with African Elephant Research Unit at Knysna Elephant Park. Every Saturday, my parents sent me to the park. There, I cleaned elephant camps, prepared their food, and took notes on elephant behavior. It was an eye-opening experience and I realized I could do more than I thought I could.

Volunteering with Tree People was fun and rewarding. As we say at Tree People, trees need people and people need trees! I volunteered each Sunday last year to plant and care for trees. I got the chance to plant trees in local parks and city streets. I plan to continue volunteering regularly next year.

Back in 2020, I volunteered as a storyteller at Friends Society's Program. I read to school children every Wednesday afternoon. I love the art of storytelling. Sometimes I stopped the story just before the ending and let children finish the story. It was an amazing experience and I look forward to doing it again next year. |

I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of a lot of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautifully when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.
Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my fist, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the set is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.
