Read, listen, sing, and have fun with Storytime! Join us every Tuesday for picture-book readings connected to objects in The Met collection. This month’s theme is Back to School. Recommended for families with children ages 18 months to 6 years.

Art History Study Group -Text and Image in Ancient Egypt

【推荐1】Going to an art museum or gallery can be a fun activity to do with family and friends.     1     It may even seem boring if you’re not sure what the art is about. Thankfully, there are many ways to appreciate different types of art and figure out what the work might mean to you.

Choose a museum

You don’t need to visit the most famous museum in your area.     2     Choose one to visit that has something you’re interested in. For example, if you enjoy taking photos, you might want to view a photography exhibit.

Take your time

When you’re at the museum and a piece of art catches your eye, pause and spend some time really taking it in. You can start by getting close to the artwork(without touching it)so you can see details you might miss if you were viewing it online. If you’re looking at a painting, for example, consider the texture on the surface and whether any brushstrokes are visible. Then step back and look at the way the brushstrokes work together to create the piece of art. Think about the story the art work may be trying to tell.     3     You might see new aspects of it that you didn’t notice before.

Consider the meaning

Once you’ve absorbed the physical aspects of the work, try to find out more about what it means. A volunteer at the museum may be available to talk to you about the piece. Free brochures may also provide information. You can also ask yourself what the work means to you.     4

Thinking about the meaning, subject, colors, and setting of a piece of art can help you better understand and appreciate artists and their work. After you leave the museum, consider which pieces of art stay in your mind and why. Talk to a friend or adult who went with you, and ask them about their favorite pieces, too. Thinking about how artists—especially those who might be from a different background or lived thousands of years ago—can connect with others through their work is part of the magic of art.

【推荐2】Participating in photography competitions can bring you various benefits. The following are four great photography competitions you may want to attend this year.

Communication Arts Photography Competition

Most photo competitions come with cash prizes. This competition doesn’t. But it is still a respected competition. To be qualified (符合资格的), your images need to be first produced or published in a period from the previous March to this March. Each participant can present five images at most, and the images must be created for the same project. The winning images will spread worldwide in Communication Arts and on commarts.com.

Sony World Photography Awards

The competition provides winners with cash prizes as well as Sony equipment. Another great thing about this competition is its travelling exhibition. No matter which country you are in, you can always notice the winning images. Participants are allowed to present five to ten images. You will love this competition because it is free to enter, and you can choose from many different categories (类别).

Moscow International Foto Awards

The goal of the competition is to discover and recognize talented photographers worldwide and introduce them to the creative community in Russia. There is a discount on entry fees for students. Participants can enter up to twenty images, both individual images and photo series in any of its nine categories.

Nikon Small World

Being a long-standing camera producer, Nikon has been running this competition since 1975. This competition is all about photomicrography. Anyone can enter, and each participant can present three images. If you don’t feel like entering even if it is free, checkout the previous winners. The images are amazing, and that might just get you in the mood for application.

【推荐3】CWA Photo Competition 2021

Calling all photographers!

We've all been spending more time indoors lately. Whether you've been killing time looking back at photos from holidays past, risking taking walking to local sites, or busy working at home, we want to see your best photos on an archaeological theme. Send then to us for your chance to win the first prize in our yearly CWA Photo Competition and have your work shown in the magazine.

The winning image and three runners-up will be featured in CWA. The overall winner will get a free 2-year subscription to the magazine.

The falls are especially impressive in winter. It has two impressive layers, reaching up to 36 feet and 69 feet, and it’s quite dramatic to see the golden light reflected off its steep water at sunset. If you want to catch a sight of the polar lights on your trip, you can also see it from September to mid-April in Iceland.

Tromso is a charming fishing village and energetic university town. Located on the Norwegian Sea off the northern coast of Norway, Tromso is particularly suitable for winter holidays as it is a popular gateway to the Arctic Circle. You can also take part in many guided tours designed around the local Sami culture and maritime history.

As Canada’s first national park, Banff National Park offers excellent views of the snow- covered Canadian Rockies. Located about two hours’drive from Calgary, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cross-country skiing opportunities.

Crater Lake National Park, about a four-hour drive south of Portland, Oregon, is especially notable during the winter when the volcano lake is covered in snow. Crater Lake was formed as a result of a volcanic eruption some 7,700 years ago and is now a must-see for travelers seeking natural experiences, such as camping and cross-country skiing.
