For quite some time I have had an interest in the situation of the homeless. I have read about it, prayed over it, and have done small things to help. But feeling that I could, and should, do more to make a difference. I concluded that living as a homeless man— at least for a very brief period— was the best way to understand what it’s like to have no place to call home.
I decided that St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church would be my first stop. Since the church opens its basement to homeless people every Friday for a hot meal, St. Vincent’s was symbolically a very good place to start my day as a homeless man.
After praying before the Blessed Sacrament, I hit the subfreezing streets with no money. I got into a line of men, women and children waiting to be admitted into the dining room where a free hot meal is served every day.
From there I walked to Health Care for the Homeless— an organization dedicated to providing free medical care to people who have no permanent residence. Inside were about 75 homeless women and men waiting to be seen by a nurse. There I spoke with an older man who had serious family problems that caused his homelessness.
Next, I stopped at a hotel and fast food restaurant asking if they were hiring. From there I walked the streets of downtown Baltimore, asking people for a little loose change to buy a cup of coffee. I politely approached (接近) approximately 35 people. About 30 of them ignored me, and said they didn’t have any money, or simply said no. But five people did offer me a small donation. I explained what I was doing, and thankfully declined their generosity.
Later that night, as I walked back to my vehicle, I realized that I was a richer person for having lived one day as a homeless man I thought about the homeless men and women I came across, and their problems.

Suddenly an angel turned up before him. “You get impatient, don’t you?” said the angel. “If you don’t want to wait, just turn the button to the right. You can jump over any life period if you want to.”
The young fellow was so happy that he turned the button lightly. How amazing! His lover appeared before him immediately staring at him with love. How wonderful it would be if the wedding ceremony were held now! He, again, turned the button. a grand wedding appeared in front of him; the band was playing cheerful music, he lost himself in it deeply. Unknowingly, the desires in his heart appeared endlessly: I also want a big house. He turned the button. I also want a crowd of lovely children. Instantly a group of lovely kids were playing joyfully in the large living room. Again, he jumped at turning the button to the right more than half.
How time flies! Before he saw the blooming flowers in the garden, everything had been covered in a deep snow. Looking at himself again, he had already become so old, his hair and beard totally white.
He was filled with regrets. I’d rather spend my life step by step than go in such a hurry. Better let me wait patiently! The button moved to the left with a rush. Once again, he was waiting for his lover under that big tree. His restlessness disappeared completely.

While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.
The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries (食品杂货), saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.
I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.
People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity (人性) as a whole. And it has influenced (影响) us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.

I went over and patted him on the shoulder, which surprised him very much. In no time he began to smile at me. So I was sure he needed some money. From the shoes he was wearing I could hardly imagine how poor he was. So I offered him a $100 bill. To my great surprise, he refused to take it. When I was wondering what he was doing, he said, “I was waiting here for 4 hours, waiting for you. Your car is so beautiful and I like it, but I don’t need that.” I knew he was mentioning the bill.
As he had refused the money, I offered to drive him around the town. The boy became so excited that he got into the car at once, “Would you please drive me home? It is only about 3 miles.” What the boy wanted to do was to show off to his friends and his family. I noticed his sister had a pale face. What’s worse, her legs were too thin, and she was unable to walk.

Anxiously, Allen looked at the nest again—— to see the wasps flying straight at him. “Hurry!” he shouted to Mrs. Carey. “Get in!”
She stepped quickly inside. Allen ran for his mini-bus. Too late; they were upon him. Just as he jumped aboard, half a dozen red spots showed on his arm, and he felt more on his back and shoulders.
As he was driving down the road, Allen felt as if something was burning at the back of his neck, and the “fire” was spreading forward toward his face. And immediate anxiety took hold of him. Allen knew that stings could cause some persons to die. But he had been stung the previous summer and the after-effects soon passed. However, what he didn’t know what that the first sting had turned his body into a time bomb waiting for the next to set off an explosion.
Miles from the nearest medical assistance, Allen began to feel his tongue thick and heavy and his heartbeat louder. Most frightening, he felt his breathing more and more difficult. He reached for the radio mike (话筒), trying to call the mini-bus center, but his words were hardly understandable. Signals were also poor that far out. He knew a rescue team was on 24-hour duty at the Amherst Fire Department’s north station. So his best chance was to make a run for it.
Rushing down the mountain, Allen tried not to panic, focusing his mind on each sharp turn. He was almost through the last of them when he felt sure he was going into shock (休克). Just then he reached for the radio mike again.
“Call fire station,” he shouted, concentrating to form the words. “Emergency. Bee sting. Emergency. There in ten minutes.”
“Five-ten,” the center replied.
Hold on, Allen thought. Keep your eyes open. Breathe. Keep awake.
At last he reached the station. Two firemen ran out. Allen felt their hands grasp him before he hit the ground. You made it, he thought.

Her book, The Lost Cat tells the story of Snowy, a cat who got lost after going outside alone at night. Bella hopes the book will teach children not to go outside at night alone.

The twin brothers took all of the money out of their piggy banks and asked their parents, Mark Klein and Sandy Rubinstein, if they could buy birthday gifts for kids who weren’t expecting any.
Then, at age 6, the boys announced that they wanted money usually spent on their birthday presents to go to charitable donations. They bought computers for police officers, and they sold cookies to raise money for sick children.
Then they learned at age 8 that they were too young to volunteer at their town’s soup kitchen, “that’s when we decided we’d have to come up with a way to take things into our own hands,” Jake, now 15 says. “We thought, ‘What can we do to show that kids are able to make a difference and do more than is expected?’”
Last year, he and Max, now going into the 10th grade at Leonia High School, started Kids That Do Good, a nonprofit (非盈利性的) website that lists hundreds of ways for young people to get involved in charitable work, coast-to-coast.
It’s a lesson that has caught on with many, including 9-year-old Sophia Somerstein, who lives near the Kleins in New Jersey.
“Max and Jake encouraged me to help collect food and I really loved the feeling of making somebody’s life better,” she says. “Now this summer, I want to help people around me, and I hope I can teach other kids, too. It’s cool that kids just like me can do something to help others.”

We talked about how so much had changed. and with the outbreak of COVID-19, how difficult it would be to do so many of those things, especially when it comes to strangers.
