【推荐1】Students at Summer Creek and Kingwood Park High schools have joined a project called “Students Helping Veterans (退伍军人) : Big Heroes, Tiny Homes” over the past school year.

The high school’s students and teachers partnered together to create a tiny home community in the Houston area, for homeless veterans. Generous local community donations helped fund the project. Besides, the schools collaborate with architects, engineers and other community partners in the local community to design and build homes expected to be 200 to 300 square feet in size. They eventually want to build a community where veterans can be surrounded by other veteran neighbors who understand and relate to their difficulties and issues when coming back to civilian life.

As a team, the students attend regular meetings together to work on the design. They are motivated by the purpose behind the project which keeps them focusing on the tasks at hand. With every nail that goes in, they know that they are improving a veteran's life and providing him a secure home where he can spend his golden years. "The kids are doing something for someone without any reward except knowing they are doing it for someone," said Missy Tayler, their proud teacher.

"They wanted to serve their country and protect us, and they came back but they didn't get the same treatment," said senior student Sarah Dalby, describing her motivation to help. She added that when she started the project, she barely knew how to use a saw but she is a fast learner and loves the work. “You have to appreciate the armed forces of our country for giving us the individual liberties that we enjoy,” senior student, Nicolas Logan said when explaining his own motivation to participate in the project.

【推荐2】The Elephant Men program is the creation of Reginald Caster and Robert Harris, two friends who grew up together in a poor neighborhood in Memphis, Tennessee. They grew up, moved away, and became successful. They remained friends and shared an aim. The aim was to help boys aged 9 to 13 in their old neighborhood. They wanted to act as role models for young boys and to stop them from getting into trouble as they got older.

They called their program The Elephant Men after reading how elephant families in Africa surround and protect their young when they are in danger. Reginald and Robert’s program supports the young men in inner cities who are at risk of losing their lives to drugs. Their idea is “protecting our youth with the power and belief of the elephant”.

They look for different ways for young men to build respect for themselves and others. One way is to use sports, especially basketball, to bring them together. Another successful program is a four-week summer work program that includes more than 100 young boys. The boys pick up rubbish across the city in exchange for a $200 gift card with which they can buy school clothes. To be part of the program, the boys have to get a reference (介绍信) from an adult at their school who is willing to write something good about them. This gives the boys a reason to do well in school.

“We know our program works,” says Reginald. “We have some kids in college now and the best day of the year for us is the weekend before school starts, when we see our boys in the stores buying their clothes and books for school.”
