As Valentine ’s Day is coming, many of us start thinking of creative and thoughtful ways to express our love to our family and friends.     1    Here are several ways to show love to strangers.

Practice compassion (同情). As humans, we often forget about the feelings of others. The people counting out all their coins to pay at the grocery store (杂货店), may be using every last penny they have to feed their family.    2    Maybe you can offer help by paying for groceries or helping them put their groceries in the car. An ounce of compassion goes a long way to show others that you care.

3    Hold the door for others, offer to help a neighbor lift a heavy box, or pick up something someone has dropped and return it. Say “Thank you”, offer to help someone standing on the side of the highway with a broken-down car, or ask people you meet how their day is going.

Make someone smile. A sweet smile is the best way to show your kindness and start a conversation. Go out of your way to make someone smile daily. Give praise to people you come across, pay for a stranger’s meal or even tell a small joke to make a person laugh.    4

Offer encouragement.     5    They may need some words of encouragement. Reach out to these people. Talk to them and give them the motivation (动力) they need to keep moving forward with their lives.

A.Give meaningful gifts.
B.Be polite to others through kindness.
C.Pick up rubbish on the street or at the park.
D.In situations like this, put yourself in other people ’s shoes.
E.We all meet people in public who may be down on their luck.
F.All of these may be just what they need to get through a difficult day.
G.But the holiday also gives us an opportunity to show love to others we don’t know.

文章大意:本文是应用文。文章主要讲述作者建议如何写旅行日记。

【推荐1】A travel diary is one of the best ways to keep a long voyage in memory. Many details that don’t seem important while you are writing your travel diary often turn out to be so memorable.

1    . When you are on a busy journey, it is easy to forget to write. You may promise yourself that you will write later, but that almost never happens. Take a few minutes every day and put down your memories. It doesn’t have to be long, just on a regular basis.

Use your “down time” for your travel diary.     2    . You can always put down a few lines in your travel diary when you are on trains, waiting for planes, drying your laundry, or waiting in line.

At the beginning of your diary, write down the day, where you are, who you are with, maybe even the weather and what you eat.     3    . Years later when you read your diary, you will know exactly what you were doing on that day.

4    . Listing facts and figures is fine but that isn’t why you traveled. A long journey is a time for self-reflection. Memories of these feelings fade quickly with time. Write about those experiences while the memories are fresh is important.

5    . Whenever you use a ticket for a train or a museum or a ride, tape the stubs(票根) to your diary. They are pieces of history from your journey. Years later you can look at the ticket stubs and see exactly what you were doing on a specific day and how much it cost.

A.Keep ticket stubs.
B.Book your ticket in advance.
C.Focus on writing about how you feel.
D.You’d better write down as much as possible.
E.These are the first details people tend to forget.
F.Get into the habit of writing your travel diary every day.
G.There is a surprising amount of down time while traveling.

【推荐2】Have you ever had the following experience? You have been given the task of organizing a conference, which includes a must-do list about a mile long. There is the conference site, the guest list, the materials, the technology and even the food and drink to think about and plan. If you are beginning to feel the stress, slow down and take a breath.     1    .

Write down your goals. You will need to clearly define what you hope to accomplish with this conference because this will shape the rest of your decisions.       2    .

Develop your budget.       3    . Then break that budget into different parts such as conference site, materials and speakers' fees. Stick to your budget, and make sure your assistants are keeping their monetary limits as well.

4    . When searching for locations, keep in mind the number of participants, the convenience of the location, parking and closeness to public transportation, airports and hotels. Your goal in finding a place to hold the conference should be making it as easy as possible for participants to attend.

Seek help from the staff of the conference site. If you have chosen a site that is known for holding conferences, you can seek help from the staff there as organizing meetings is what they do every day.       5    . They should be able to answer any questions or concern and provide advice when needed.

Of course, full preparations also include a walk-through. Go to the site and meet with the staff the day before to be certain that everything is in place and to take care of any small details.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章告诉求职者在写简历时要注意的一些问题,尤其是要注意文化方面的差异。

【推荐3】When we are hunting for a job, the primary thing that we should consider is to get your resume impressive. The term “resume” means a document describing one’s educational qualifications and professional experience. However, guidelines for preparing a global resume are constantly changing. The best advice is to find out what is appropriate regarding the company culture, the country culture, and the culture of the person making the hiring decision. The following list is a good place to start.

* In many countries, it is a standard procedure to attach a photo or have your photo printed on your resume. Do not attach a photograph to your resume if you are sending it to the United States, though.

* Educational requirements differ from country to country. In most cases of “cross-border” job hunting, just stating the title of your degree will not be enough. Provide the reader with details about your studies and any related experience.

* Pay attention to the resume format you use — chronological (时间的) or reverse-chronological order. If you find no specific guidelines, the general preference is for the reverse-chronological format, which means listing your current or most recent experience first.

* The level of computer technology and accessibility to the Internet varies from country to country. Even if a company or individual lists an e-mail address, there is no guarantee that they will actually receive your email. Send a paper copy of your resume, as well as the emailed copy, just to make sure that it is received.

* If you are writing your resume in English, find out if the receiver uses British English or American English because there are variations between the two versions.

* Although English is widely accepted today as being the universal language of business, most multinational companies will expect you to speak the language of one of the countries in which they do business, in addition to English. Have your resume prepared in both languages, and be ready for your interview to be conducted in both languages. Most companies will want to see and hear proof of your language skills.

* Be aware that paper sizes are different in different countries. The United States standard is 8½ by 11 inches, while the European A4 standard is 21 by 29.7 centimeters. When you send your resume by email, reformat it to the receiver’s standard. Otherwise, when it is printed out, half of your material may be missing.

1. From the passage, we learn that ________.
A.concerning education, just state the title of your degree will be enough
B.Asian countries may have the same standard paper size
C.a resume can help us know about a person’s personality
D.a person’s educational background should be included in a resume
2. The passage is most probably intended for ________.
A.job hunters that seek careers abroad
B.companies that do international business
C.people that are employed by companies overseas
D.graduates that can speak over one foreign language
3. The passage mainly wants to tell us that a global resume should ________.
A.be highly professionalB.be especially informative
C.be culturally appropriateD.be specifically bilingual
