Winter at Home, a Smithsonian at-home activity guide

“Winter at Home” is a new 40-page activity guide that uses the vast collections and special knowledge of the Smithsonian to arouse learners’ creativity and imagination. The guide is filled with hands-on activities, puzzles and games that students can do to explore topics in STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), history, culture and the arts. The guide features bilingual(双语的) Spanish /English language content.

“Winter at Home” invites learners to look at their homes and neighborhoods in new ways. Learners are encouraged to have fun at home, with activities such as inviting a bird to breakfast at your windowsill, decoding a message in your bathroom mirror and recreating art-works using clothing from your closet.

This learning guide will be printed and distributed in select cities and is available for free download. An initial distribution of 100,000 copies will be sent to pick-up sites.

Here are some of the activities featured in the guide that you can also access on the Smithsonian Learning Lab:

• Learners can create portraits using objects found in their homes, inspired by the work of artist Marisol Escobar and tips from educators at the National Portrait Gallery.

• Learners can learn about Japanese art and make a mini paper folding screen at the National Museum of Asian Art.

• Learners can explore light and shadows and experiment with various at-home extension activities from the Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access’ “Talk with Me Toolkit”. Wavelength: At the Moment

On March 26, the art exhibition Wavelength: At the Moment was officially opened at the Beijing Times Art Museum. It is divided into four sectors: “Past Future”, “Present Continuous”, “Present Simple” and “Future Continuous”.

This exhibition invited 18 well-known contemporary artists from China and abroad to explore the emotional bond that contemporary art brings to the audience by transforming the exhibition site into a junction point between time, space and reality. Artists use a variety of media as means of artistic expression, focusing on interaction with the audience.

Round and Develop

Supported by the China National Arts Fund, Round and Develop provides a panoramic view of the development in the medium, style and aesthetics of painting.

The exhibition, running at the Art Museum of Central Academy of Fine Arts until April 30, shows 100 paintings that reflect the evolution of artists working with mixed media over the past three decades.

Standing out from Three Centuries

Standing out from Three Centuries, running through May 9 at the National Art Museum of China(NAMOC) and Nanjing Museum, shows dozens of Chen Zhifo's paintings from the collections of the two museums. NAMOC has collaborated with Nanjing Museum on this paying tribute to Chen's accomplishments.

The exhibition shows Chen's transition in style, from elegance, tranquility and a scholarly touch to a matured feeling of majesty.

It’s time to plan a visit to your dream national park destination. For a few days each year, every national park in America is free to visit — including hundreds of national monuments, seashores, historic sites and more.

Less than a quarter of them have entry fees, but those that do charge up to $20 per person or up to $35 per vehicle. Revenue (收入) from these fees stays in the National Park Service to cover visitor services, including improving accessibility, restoring wildlife habitat and more.

“National parks are places that awaken senses, inspire curiosity, encourage reflection, and promote joy,” National Park Service Director Chuck Sams said in a statement. “The entrance fee-free days expand opportunities for people to visit their national parks and experience the beauty and history of our country.”

There’s a new addition to the entrance fee-free days in 2024: Juneteenth, which became recognized as a national holiday on June 17, 2021.

National park free entry days for 2024:

●April 20 — First day of National Park Week

●June 19 — Juneteenth

●Aug. 4 — Great American Outdoors Day

●Sept. 28 — National Public Lands Day

●Nov. 11 — Veterans Day

Fees for certain activities like camping and fishing will still be in place. Additionally, parks operated in partnership with outside parties may charge other types of fees. For instance, Waco Mammoth charges an access fee for its dig shelter. That park is run by the Park Service, together with the City of Waco, Texas, and Baylor University.
