Be yourself

“Be yourself.” Perhaps you’ve heard people say this to you before , but you’ re not really sure what it means.    1    But being yourself really means being true to yourself. To be yourself, though, you have to learn about yourself.

Get to know your inner self.

Write down things that are important to you, such as being honest, playing fair or being a good friend. It’ s not about whether you prefer peanut butter to marmalade on your toast, it’ s about what makes you feel happy and comfortable with yourself. It’s about knowing what makes you feel awkward or sad.     2

Don’t always do things to please others.

If you do what others want all the time, it’s easy to forget about yourself and what you want.    3    Don’ t always go along with the crowd, but stop and take a breath first. Ask yourself if this is right for you.

Learn what your limits are.

4    It’s about understanding what is OK with you and what isn’ t. Without boundaries, it’ s easy for people to walk all over you and take advantage of you. If you set boundaries, you will recognise when people are trying to cross them.

    5

Learn to love all your little odd habits and the things that are unique to you. This may be something about your appearance, or it could be the way you speak or the type of music you like. You don’t have to be the same as everyone else to be loved or liked.

A.Behave differently.
B.Appreciate yourself.
C.This is called setting boundaries.
D.Who else would you be, after all?
E.It’s the things that matter to you, deep down.
F.If you find yourself doing this, ask yourself why.
G.You should, instead, put yourself into others’ shoes.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了几种克服社交焦虑,建立正确社交的方法。

【推荐1】As humans, we’re meant to be social creatures. In fact, being socially connected is key to our mental and emotional health.     1    This can cause us to cut ourselves off from others and gradually become lonely. Social situations can seem frightening, but the truth is never quite so black-and-white.

People aren’t thinking about you—at least not to the degree that you think.     2     Just like you’re thinking about yourself, other people are thinking about themselves. They’re not spending their free time judging you, so stop wasting time worrying about what others think of you.

3     When you’re socially anxious, it can seem as though everyone else is fully confident. But that’s not the case. There are still many shy people out there struggling with the same self-doubts as you are. The next person you speak to is just as likely to be worried about what you think of them!

You don’t have to be perfect to be liked. In fact, our imperfections can be pleasant.     4     If you can cheerfully accept your awkwardness and imperfections, you’ll likely find that others will, too. They may even like you better for it!

It’s okay to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes; it’s part of being human.     5     Your value doesn’t come from being perfect. If you find self-forgiveness difficult, try to look at your own mistakes as you would those of a friend.

Overcoming social fear requires practice. Don’t expect to become socially comfortable without putting in the time. That said, you can start small. Take baby steps towards being more confident and social, and then build on those successes.

A.So give yourself a break when you mess up.
B.Most people are caught up in their own lives.
C.The good news is that you can learn from them.
D.People are much more confident than you think.
E.Even our weaknesses can bring us closer to others.
F.Many other people feel just as awkward and nervous as you do.
G.Yet many of us are shy and feel awkward around unfamiliar people.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。人们不应该局限于现状,应该走出舒适圈,挑战自我,文章给出了4个建议。

【推荐2】If something that you’re doing doesn’t challenge you, then it doesn’t change you. We all need some normal stress in our lives, after all.     1     So challenge the following limits:

1.Figure out what you’re scared of and do it continuously.

If you’re a salesman, and you’re scared of talking to people personally or over the phone now, instead of being scared and thinking you’ll fail, spend at least five minutes a day to pick up the phone and make a call.     2     But don’t stop on the first try! Eventually, you can look at fear in the eye and say, “Go on. I’m not scared!”

2.     3

Make sure this hobby is not linked to your career; you have to relax and relieve your stress while performing this. Some examples might be cooking, sewing, painting and so on. Apart from helping you challenge yourself, taking a class for your hobby may also give you extra income.

3. Set aside at least nine minutes a day for physical exercise.

4     A simple 9-minute run around your neighborhood can do wonders for yourself. Exercise can not only help you maintain your regular weight, but also make you feel better about yourself.

4.Travel and allow yourself to be interested in new people.

Don’t just limit yourself to your fellow travelers, try to connect with the service staff. You never know what kind of people they’re going to be. Get out of your house or go online to book your ticket right now.     5

A.Someone may hang up on you.
B.You should do it continuously.
C.You don’t need to go to the gym.
D.Running in the gym may be a better choice.
E.Start to travel now and learn to challenge yourself.
F.Take a class for a hobby you’ve been wanting to develop.
G.You can never see any improvement if you stick to your comfort zone.
