As humans, we’re meant to be social creatures. In fact, being socially connected is key to our mental and emotional health.     1    This can cause us to cut ourselves off from others and gradually become lonely. Social situations can seem frightening, but the truth is never quite so black-and-white.

People aren’t thinking about you—at least not to the degree that you think.     2     Just like you’re thinking about yourself, other people are thinking about themselves. They’re not spending their free time judging you, so stop wasting time worrying about what others think of you.

3     When you’re socially anxious, it can seem as though everyone else is fully confident. But that’s not the case. There are still many shy people out there struggling with the same self-doubts as you are. The next person you speak to is just as likely to be worried about what you think of them!

You don’t have to be perfect to be liked. In fact, our imperfections can be pleasant.     4     If you can cheerfully accept your awkwardness and imperfections, you’ll likely find that others will, too. They may even like you better for it!

It’s okay to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes; it’s part of being human.     5     Your value doesn’t come from being perfect. If you find self-forgiveness difficult, try to look at your own mistakes as you would those of a friend.

Overcoming social fear requires practice. Don’t expect to become socially comfortable without putting in the time. That said, you can start small. Take baby steps towards being more confident and social, and then build on those successes.

A.So give yourself a break when you mess up.
B.Most people are caught up in their own lives.
C.The good news is that you can learn from them.
D.People are much more confident than you think.
E.Even our weaknesses can bring us closer to others.
F.Many other people feel just as awkward and nervous as you do.
G.Yet many of us are shy and feel awkward around unfamiliar people.

【推荐1】Test taking can be difficult, and many people have problems taking tests even if they studied well. Test taking skills are developed over time, but having good study habits and always attending class benefit the test taker. There are several tips for becoming a better test taker, but it’s best to do what is most helpful for you.

1     The best way to study is to make note cards that you can use to test yourself. Also, study with a friend and have the person quiz you on questions you’re having difficulty with.

Take any practice exams available for the test.     2     Make sure to take advantage of any offered help from your professor.

Go to study tables and review classes that are typically offered before major college exams.     3     And see if a teacher’s assistant could help you with reviewing for the test during office hours.

Go into the exam feeling prepared. During the test, make sure to pace yourself and not to think about the time limit. Read each question twice. If you’re stuck on a question or problem for more than five minutes, move on to the next question.     4

Ask questions if you’re not sure about how a question is worded or if you’re having any other difficulty understanding the question. As long as you’re not directly asking for the answer, some explanation from professors will help to guarantee you answer correctly. Finally, go through your answers if you finish early.     5     Thus you can make sure you feel confident of your answers.

A.Make sure to come back to the question later.
B.Review the entire test to double-check for errors.
C.Ask your professors if they have time to help you.
D.Make sure your notes are carefully made in notebooks.
E.Study all your notes and learning guides before the test.
F.Inform your professor if you can’t make it to a review session.
G.Some professors may let you take much practice before the exams.

【推荐2】How to develop self-discipline (自律)

Face the reality

It’s easy for us to make excuses for ourselves or show ourselves in a better way than our actual situation.     1    , we have to accept the truth. Sometimes people make comments on our reality. It is hard to hear, but we need to accept the truth before promising to change.

Set clear goals

We have to keep in mind where we want to go and what we want to finish. If we don’t set clear goals, we’ll float around like feathers in the wind. Then show these goals where you will see them every day.     2    . So I made a plan each day and ran 15 miles a week. Every day, I looked at those goals and made sure I achieved them.

    3

No one likes to sleep in more than I do. I am entirely a night owl (夜猫子). However, when I’m in the habit of getting up early, I am much more disciplined and productive. Getting up early doesn’t give us the ability to create miracles, but it does help us start our day’s work in a focused way.

Do the small things

4    . It doesn’t happen that way. Self-discipline starts by performing small and ordinary activities consistently. Every small act of faithfulness makes your self-discipline stronger.

Keep track of your progress

It’s pointless to have goals if you aren’t measuring whether or not you are moving toward them. Like I said, I need to update my spreadsheet every day. When I don’t track my progress, I stop doing things I need to do and become lazy. It’s easy to lack discipline when you lose focus on where you’re going.     5    .

A.Get up early
B.But if we want to change
C.And when I breathe deeply
D.I ended up in bed for six weeks
E.We all want big changes to happen quickly
F.Several years ago, I wanted to lose 20 pounds
G.Keeping track helps you stay in the right direction

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了保持一天积极振奋的方法。

【推荐3】Do you want to be excited about your day? Do you want to go through your day with enthusiasm?     1     How could that happen? Based on my experiences, here is how to be excited about your day.

Have something to be grateful for.

You can’t be excited about your day if you are complaining. You need to build an attitude of gratitude. To build it, find something to be grateful for and fill your mind with it.

You could start with something simple that you might take for granted, such as living in peace or being healthy.     2     For instance, when something went wrong, focus on the lessons that you can learn from it, not on the downsides. This will put you in a positive frame of mind.

Have something to look forward to.

3     For instance, when Bill Gates was asked about the one thing that most excites him to start his day, his answer was “learning new things”. That is the thing that he looks forward to.

What is the answer in your case? Having a cause that matters to you will help you a lot here.     4

Manage your energy.

While the two points above can help you start your day with enthusiasm, they might not be enough to sustain (支撑) you throughout the day. For this, you need to manage your energy.     5     As for your mental energy, you can start with a “quiet time” in the morning to help you stay centered throughout the day. Also, avoid filling your mind with negative thoughts. If someone said something bad to you, take the positive takeaway and move on.

A.This includes both your physical and mental energy.
B.After that, you should expect yourself to learn new things.
C.If you want to be enthusiastic, you should try to be grateful.
D.It will give you a sense of purpose as you go through your day.
E.While I still have a lot to improve, I’m often excited about my day.
F.Next, you should have something to look forward to during your day.
G.In addition, focus on the positive side of things, even for seemingly bad things that happened.
