What Goes Around Comes Around

One day something was wrong with the car of an old lady from St. Louis. She was trapped on the side of the road in the dim light. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Then a man looking poor and hungry pulled up in front of her car and got out. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why not wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.”

Bryan crawled (蜷缩) under the car looking for a place to put the jack (千斤顶), skinning his fingers a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he got dirty and his hands hurt.

The old lady told him she already imagined all the awful things that could have happened if he had not stopped. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid and asked how much she owed him.

Bryan just smiled and told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed. Bryan added, “And think of me.” He never thought twice about being paid. He had lived his whole life that way.

Then the old lady started her car and drove off. A few miles down the road the old lady saw a small dirty-looking restaurant. She went in and ordered a simple meal priced at 5. The waitress was to give birth to her baby in a month but she was still busy clearing tables, filling sugar bowls and serving people. Obviously she must have lived a hard life.

At that moment she remembered Bryan. After finishing the meal, the old lady paid for her food with one 100 bill. The waitress took over the money, saying “Thanks” politely and told her to wait a moment for the change.

Years ago, not long after graduating from school and starting my career in Denver, I set off on an exciting alone trip to reunite with an old friend. As I packed my car, little did I know that this adventure would uncover the remarkable bonds that can form between strangers, all driven by the simple exchange of “thank you.”

My journey began with an exciting flight to Albuquerque, a lively city in New Mexico. My ultimate destination was Oklahoma City, where I looked forward to visiting a dear friend. The trip was relatively smooth, treating me to beautiful sights along the way. While waiting in line to pay for gas, I struck up a friendly chat with an older couple who were also refueling their vehicle.

Continuing my journey with joy in my heart, dark smoke suddenly rising from my car’s back. Panic grasped me as I hurriedly pulled over to the side of the road, unsure of our next steps.   In an incredible turning point of fate, the same friendly couple from the gas station pulled up behind my car. With warm smiles and open hearts, they generously offered to drive me to my friend’s place in Oklahoma City. During the ride, we engaged in lively conversations, sharing stories and laughter as the miles passed by. Upon reaching our destination, the husband even handed me his business card as a gesture of goodwill and kindness.

Appreciative of their help, I later expressed my gratitude through a heartfelt thank-you note.   In response, they sent me a precious Christmas gift along with a touching note as well. As the years passed, life threw another similar story on my way. On a significant day, I drove to a nearby town for an important meeting.

Unfortunately, in my hurry, I accidentally left my car’s lights on all day long. As nightfall approached, I returned to my car, only to find that the battery had completely died. Thankfully, I noticed the Friendly Ford dealership conveniently located next door. Filled with hope, I entered the showroom, where I encountered two helpful salesmen.

Alexis, 17, sat quickly in the passenger seat of her dad’s car. She let her eyes lazily scan the landscape for wildlife. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them. “Dad, there’s a deer there!” Alexis said, rolling down the window for a better look. It was a male deer with sharp antlers (鹿角) on each side of its head.

As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the deer’s head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer’s head. Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman. Sue, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The deer followed her and edged (缓慢移动) closer. “I knew I was in trouble.” says Sue. She went to pick up a stick for self-defense, and the deer attacked her. It lifted her with its antlers and threw her into the air. Sue felt blood flow down her leg. Within seconds, the deer had pushed her off the road.

When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll. Alexis looked into the woman’s terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the teenager jumped quickly out of the car and ran toward the deer. She was kicking and hitting it to get its attention. Michael, her father, who had followed his daughter, pushed the deer away from the woman.

【推荐3】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

One cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What's worse, he found that he only had ten cents left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn't eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house.

Hesitantly (犹豫) he knocked at the door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his courage when a lovely young woman opened the door. "What can I do for you?" asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while. "Would you please give me some...a drink of water?" the boy dared not look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to eat so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe (欠) you?" "You don't owe me anything, '‘ she replied with a warm smile on her face. " My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness."

Deeply moved, he said sincerely, "Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart."

As Howard Kelly left that house, he felt stronger physically, and it also increased his faith in the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.

Years later the young woman became seriously ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally, they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists was Dr. Howard Kelly. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.
