You may be familiar with the following famous people, but have you heard of their graduation speeches, in which they either share their unforgettable experiences or give you some great inspiration.
●Michael Dell, University of Texas at Austin
And now you’ve accomplished something great and important here, and it’s time for you to move on to what’s next. And you must not let anything prevent you from taking those first steps. You must also commit to the adventure. Just have faith in the skills and the knowledge you’ve been blessed with and go.
●J. K. Rowling, Harvard University
Half my lifetime ago, I was striking an uneasy balance between my ambition and the expectation from my parents who were not rich. But what I feared most for myself at your age was not poverty, but failure. The fact that you are graduating from Harvard suggests that you know little about failure. You might be driven by a fear of failure quite as much as a desire for success.

Sometimes life’s going to hit you on the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking, and don’t settle.

But procrastination does have consequences. When your procrastination leaves you feeling discouraged, it is time to take action, and one of the best ways to get rid of it is to make an un-schedule.
An un-schedule is a weekly calendar of all the ways in which your time is already accounted for. You consider not only your timed commitments such as classes and meetings, but also your untimed activities such as meals, exercise, time with friends, and the like. Once you have made your un-schedule, you may be able to see your time is often filled with more activities than you realize, for instance, that you really don’t have five hours to spend writing on the night before your paper is due. Procrastinators’ views of time tend to be unrealistic, and the un-schedule can help you outline a realistic plan. By planning accordingly, you will not only get a better night’s sleep, you may also end up with a better paper.
The un-schedule might also be a good way to get started on a larger project, such as a term paper or an honors paper. You may think that you have “all semester” to get the writing done, but if you really map out how much time you have available to write on a daily and weekly basis, you will see that you need to get started sooner, rather than later. In addition, the un-schedule may reveal especially busy weeks or months, which will help you budget time for long-term projects.
Perhaps most importantly, the un-schedule can help you examine how you spend your time. You may be surprised at how much time you spend watching television, and decide to make a change. It’s especially important that you build time for fun activities into your un-schedule. Otherwise, you will procrastinate in order to steal time for relaxation.
You can also use the un-schedule to record your progress towards your goal. Reward yourself for your small successes. Seeing what you’ve achieved will help reinforce (强化) the productive behavior, and you will feel more motivated in the following process.
As you explore ways to conquer procrastination, don’t expect overnight transformation. You developed the habit over a long time; you aren’t going to stop magically. But you can change the behavior, bit by bit. If you start to make an un-schedule now, you will eventually develop new habits.

And then I began asking, "Why are some people more successful than others?" This question changed my life.
Over the years, I have read thousands of books and articles on the subjects of success and achievement(成就). It seems that the reasons have been discussed and written about for more than two thousand years, in every possible way. One quality that most philosophers, teachers and experts agree on is the importance of self-discipline (自律). As Al Tomsik summarized it years ago, "Success is tons of discipline."
Some years ago, I attended a conference in Washington. It was the lunch break and I was eating at a nearby food fair. The area was crowded and I sat down at the last open table by myself, even though it was a table for four. A few minutes later, an older gentleman and a younger woman who was his assistant came along carrying trays of food, obviously looking for a place to sit. With plenty of room at my table, I immediately invited the older gentleman to join me. He was hesitant (犹豫), but I insisted. Finally, thanking me as he sat down, we began to chat over lunch.
It turned out that his name was Kop Kopmeyer. As it happened, I immediately knew who he was. He was a legend in the field of success and achievement. Kop Kopmeyer had written four large books, each of which contained 250 success principles that he had obtained from more than fifty years of research and study. I had read all four books from cover to cover, more than once.
After we had chatted for a while, I asked him the question that many people in this situation would ask, "Of all the one thousand success principles that you have discovered, which do you think is the most important?”
He smiled at me, as if he had been asked this question many times, and replied, without hesitating, "The most important success principle of all was stated by Thomas Huxley many years ago. He said, 'Do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not.'"
He went on to say, "There are 999 other success principles that I have found in my reading and experience, but without self-discipline, none of them work."
1. Why did the writer ask the question in Paragraph 2 ?A.Because he wasn't satisfied with himself. |
B.Because he was a person of self-discipline. |
C.Because he dislike those successful people. |
D.Because he wanted to share his idea on success. |

When I was in Grade 4, I got my first diary as a present from my mother. It made me feel very important because it was a precious gift to me in the year when a printed diary was rare. During the first week of my life as a diary owner, I kept looking at it. My heart filling with pride. In the second week, I suddenly felt nervous. I had not written a single word in the diary. And now each page seemed to be looking at me in sorrow for the way it was being gored (弄褶皱), so I decided to keep an account of how I spent the day at school.
I kept my promise to the diary that every day after coming back from school, I would take out the diary, open the page dated for that day and write about what happened. But a strange thing happened — each page looked dull, instead of looking as if it came straight out of a famous writer’s book.
I recently read a 4000-year-old account of a young boy’s day in school. It surrounded almost the same thing as mine! I was shocked. This boy was from Summer (苏美尔). The Sumerians, as they were called, invented a lot of things. They constructed the first cities. They stuck to an idea that children must go to a place like school for education.
What was the account of the boy’s day in school like? Well almost like mine but 4,000 years ago! I read it in a book called The Mammoth Book of How it Happened, by Jon E. Lewis. In a fascinating manner, he has put the important and usual things together into one collection, eye-witness accounts of moments in history, also eventful and ordinary.
The book told me that for schoolchildren anywhere in the world and probably at any time in history, school has always meant the same. Perhaps writing diaries too.
1. What did the author do with his first diary during the first week?2. Who is Jon E. Lewis?
3. Please underline the false part in the following statement and explain why.
▷The author felt dull when he read a 4000-year-old account of a young boy’s day, because the diary surrounded almost the same thing as his.
4. What do you think about writing dairies? (In about 40 words)

Subject: Piano restoration
Date: November 1
Hello Mr. Parkes,
I own a piano that I would like to have restored. It is one of the very first Steinway & Sons pianos produced, and dates back to the late-1800s.
I would like to have the piano fully restored. This restoration will involve the piano’s internal mechanics (机械部件) as well as the piano’s wood, which has a rough surface. The piano stool (琴凳) will also need restoring. Remarkably, all of the piano’s keys are still in perfect condition.
As I would probably qualify for free pickup and delivery, could you also tell me which transport company you use?
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Regards,
Benjamin Rothschild

Murder in Three Acts
BY AGATHA CHRISTIE
My mother is a crime fiction(侦探小说)lover and, when I was having trouble learning to read, we'd sit in my bed at home in Chicago and take it in turns to read a paragraph. It was the first book I read cover-to-cover and I later became a writer because of that experience. Not only did it give me a love of crime fiction but, more importantly, it taught me that reading can be a shared experience.
Cryptonomicon
BY NEAL STEPHENSON
This book showed me that historical fiction need not be dry, but can be lively and enjoyable. Stephenson asks readers to take science seriously, but writes the story in a funny way. I'd long known of Alan Turing, but Stephenson's technique(手法)of describing him was surprising; I saw how a writer can bring a real person to life for modern readers.
A Visit from the Goon Squad
BY JENNIFER EGAN
Egan uses a technique that I drew on when writing The Imitation Game. She tells stories from different voices and times, and uses many styles that say to readers, "I've done a lot of work, but now you have to join in and work it out for yourselves. "
With my latest book, my greatest hope is that readers will want to get other people discussing the book. I've just started the conversation.

After graduation from university, Levine worked a number of industrial jobs, including the night work in factories, reading and writing poems in his off hours. In 1953, he studied at the University of Iowa. There, Levine met Robert Lowell and John Berryman, whom Levine called his “one great guide”.
About writing poems, Levine wrote: I believed even then that if I could change my experience into poems I would give it the value and honor that it did not begin to have on its own. I thought too that if I could write about it, I could come to understand it: I believed that if I could understand my life — or at least the part my work played in it — I could write it with some degree of joy, something obviously missing from my life.”
Levine published his first collection of poems, On the Edge in 1961, followed by Not This Pig in 1968. Throughout his life Levine published many books of poems, winning many prizes. A review said, “Levine writes poems about the bravery of men, physical labor, simple pleasures and strong feelings, often set in working-class Detroit or in central California, where he worked or lived.”
He taught for many years at California State University, Fresno and served as Distinguished Poet in Residence for the Creative Writing Program at New York University.
