About 400 high school students from Western Pennsylvania and the neighboring state of Ohio joined a heated discussion recently on “China: What Does the Future Hold?”

“It’s either going to turn out really good or really bad—who knows?” said Braveen Ragunathan, a senior from an Ohio high school. In his mind all Americans are connected to China in some way.

The forum was held in Pittsburgh, once a US industrial center, now facing job-cuts because of competition brought about by globalization. The aim of the forum is to help American students learn more about the outside world.

Elliott Blackwell, a junior at the Neighborhood Academy, said the forum let him know more about how China’s economic development will affect America in the future.

Some students, although impressed by China’s economic boom, expressed uneasiness about the nation’s practices and differences from the American way of doing business and politics.

“China is a power coming up, so they might challenge us,” Paul Amon, a junior from Oil City High School, said. “I’d hope that China can be our partner but I think that we’d clash along the way because we’re too different,” he added.

George Riley, a teacher explained: “The view of China is usually negative and I think that’s fueled by the media.”

However, some negative feelings are not from the media. Merri Ebel is a senior at East Allegheny High School north of Pittsburgh. Both her parents lost their jobs recently. The company they worked for said it was cheaper to produce goods in China rather than the US.

“China is just this big question mark. China was just a big country with millions of people that no one really knew about because it was so far away and our class was more American history based,” she said.

For better or worse US teenagers are eager to know more about China, the forum shows.

【推荐1】Many parents worry that showing negative emotions in front of their children will cause them to suffer. For example, children may end up thinking it’s their fault or simply “catch” the emotion. Indeed, this worry has a sound basis — the phenomenon of “emotional contagion” (情绪感染) is real, and one recent study found that parents can transfer their fear of going to the dentist, for example, to their children.

On the other hand, there is the natural idea that we should “be real”   with our children, and that they will benefit from watching a parent who struggles and eventually deals with their negative emotions like any other human being.

There are three concepts to consider when it comes to emotional display in front of children: suppression (压抑),“uncontained” expression, and talking about emotions. Suppression of emotion is when you hide the outward signs of an emotion. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work very well — the act of suppressing your emotion actually increases your blood pressure. Observers can pick up on your distress despite your efforts to hide it, making them feel stressed. The recent research has also found that when parents feel negative emotions and keep them from their children, they experience lower relationship quality and decreased responsiveness to their child’s needs.

On the other hand, “uncontained” expression of anger and sadness by the parent is also not salutary for the child. Uncontained means high intensity emotion, with no attempts to regulate or take ownership of it. Shouting, smashing (摔) things and blaming someone else for “making you angry” are all example of this .

So, what is the middle ground? That would be talking about emotion taking ownership of them and showing your child that you are trying to deal with them. Classic research found that six-year-old kids had better emotional understanding and perspective-taking skills if their mothers had talked to them about their emotions at the age of three. In fact, the more the mothers had talked, the better the outcome would be.

So next time you feel sad, angry or frustrated and your child is watching you expressing emotion, do explain what’s going on in terms they can understand.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了中国年轻一代缓解压力的新方法。

【推荐2】A growing number of Chinese young generations are looking for new methods to relieve (缓解) stress, which include raising unusual “pets”, hugging (拥抱) trees, watching stress relief videos and playing other stress-relieving toys.

A new toy called “mango dog” recently is becoming popular among young people.     1    . The process of making “mango dogs” allows them to free themselves from the anxieties of work and study. This is not the first time that young people have raised unusual “pets”. For example, college students have shared online their experiences of raising stones and paper box “dogs”. These “pets” share similar characteristics—they don’t cry, make noise or get sick.

2    . “You may think you are hugging the tree, but in fact, the tree is hugging you,” says a young man. The same feeling is shared by those who have experienced tree hugging. They say that their anxiety has been relieved.     3    . In some big cities, some people have even organized tree hugging interest groups and regularly plan tree hugging activities.

At the same time, a young media worker finds the joy in watching fun videos before sleeping. “I especially enjoy watching stress relief videos, like washing blankets and cutting soap.     4    . It helps me fall asleep more easily.”

The popularity of these stress relief methods reflects young people’s need to relieve emotional pressure. According to public data, there are more than 800 companies in China with names, businesses, products, or services with the term “stress relief”.     5    .

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了坦桑尼亚的哈扎族人的生活方式。

【推荐3】The Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania live a life that has not changed much over ten thousand years. They have no crops, no house animals, no permanent shelters. In spite of long exposure to agriculturalist groups around them, the Hadza have maintained their lifestyle.

The story of the spread of agriculture is the story of growing population density (密度). Villages formed, then cities, then nations. Agriculture’s rise, however, came with a price. It introduced infectious diseases, social inequality, occasional famines (饥荒) and war. Professor Jared Diamond of UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) has called the adoption of agriculture “the worst mistake in human history”— a mistake from which we have never recovered.

Looking at the Hadza, you can see why he came to this conclusion. They do not engage in warfare. They do not live densely (稠密地) enough to be threatened by an infectious outbreak. They have no known history of famine (饥荒). The Hadza diet is more stable (稳定 的) and varied than that of most of the world’s citizens. They live almost entirely free of possessions. They enjoy an extraordinary amount of leisure time, “working” — actively pursuing food — only four to six hours a day.

The chief reason the Hadza have been able to maintain their lifestyle so long is that their homeland is not an inviting place. Recently, however, population growth has brought a flood of people into Hadza lands. The region has generally been viewed by outsiders as unused, a Place in need of development. The Hadza, who by nature are not a combative (好战的) people, have almost always moved away instead of fighting.

There are many things to envy about the Hadza, mostly what free spirits they appear to be. Free from schedules, jobs, bosses, bills, traffic, taxes, laws, social duties and money. But who of us could live like them? It’s incredibly risky. Medical help is far away. One bad fall from a tree, one bite from a snake, and you’re dead. The fact is that it’s too late for us to go back to the Hadza lifestyle. Of greater concern is that soon it may be impossible for them to maintain theirs.
