We call Talent Show the biggest stage in our country. I stood on that huge stage, with my throat dry. As I stared at the audience, I knew this moment could change my life forever. When judges asked my name and I tried to speak, nothing came out. The crowd fell silent, waiting for the words to come. Finally I stuttered(结巴地说) my name and my age. “As you can tell,” I said, “I have a speech disorder…”
I’d love to sing and had already signed up for the school talent show in fourth grade when I started stuttering.Fortunately, most of the kids at my school were kind, and I was rarely made fun of. I tried speech therapy too, but it didn’t help. I feared to sing in the school talent show. Therefore, I decided to practice at home. To my surprise, the words came smoothly when I sang. And then I decided to learn to play the guitar, which was given as a birthday gift by my father.
One afternoon, I walked into the basement, where I kept my musical equipment. My eyes lit on the guitar. I picked it up and started playing. I opened my mouth, and the words came flooding out. Then I wrote a song called I Will Trust, telling the pain IP’d experienced. The next day, I filmed a video of performing the song and posted it online. Hundreds of strangers left comments that I had uplifted them with my music. Ever since, I’ve been writing songs.
Last year, I started college and majored in music production. When I saw Talent Show audition(试唱)announcement pop up on my computer, I wanted to have a try. Several months later, I was standing on that stage, trying to calm my nerves as I introduced myself, “I have a speech impediment.” I said, “It was definitely something that caused me to…” I took a long pause to find the words. “…to hide. But I found that I don’t stutter when I sing.”

Today was the finals of the Dance Competition. Our team of five had me as the lead dancer; then there was Grace, my best friend and Eric, a dance lover who is a master in perfecting our choreography (编舞); and two talented twins, with such flexibility and grace on the stage that one cannot take their eyes off them.
We had found a perfect coach for our team. Jackie, a cousin of Eric’s, worked in a dance school. She was a bit hesitant at first, but quickly agreed when she saw the progress we had made so far.
In the dressing rooms, there were so many other competitors preparing for their performance, rushing here and there.
Grace and I had changed into our costumes and were putting on our shoes when Eric murmured, “Who are they?”
We turned to follow his stare, among many people, four beautiful girls along with a lean boy had just walked in.
“They’re first-rate!” cried Grace, “more like fashion models.”
They sure were. A look at the list of competitors told me they were from “Tweekverse”, the most famous dance school in the whole country.
Jackie came up behind us, “Guys, it’s time, come on. Let’s go!”
“Oooh, do you get the vibe (氛围)?” Grace was excited. I could understand her, I didn’t feel any less thrilled.
When we entered the concert hall, my jaw literally just dropped. It was massive. There were so many people. The four judges, who were seated at a large panel, did look very serious.
The competition started. The first performances were brilliant. One team had the neon (霓虹) theme, in which they wore shine-in-the-dark costumes and the whole place was dark. I was attracted to their impressive display. Obviously, everybody was. The judges’ cards displayed the scores. They were marking out of ten.
The next performances were even better, but for us, they became more competitive. The group from Tweekverse was the best. Their costumes, charming faces and fascinating performance impressed everyone.

It was March 2021 and my partner, Gabe, and I were taking a road trip in his little car from my home in Weyburn to visit our friends in Nelson. It was our first trip together, meaning it would be an adventure on so many levels.
At around 5:30 p.m., we were driving along the Crowsnest Highway, a steep winding road that cut through the southern Canadian Rockies. I was texting my family when I happened to lookup in tie to see an enormous tree in front of us on the road-standing straight up! It was pushed along by a mudslide(泥石流) that swallowed everything in its path. Gabe tried to stop, but it was late. We shot each other a look and said, “What bad luck!” Within seconds, our car went over the edge of a 900-foot cliff(悬崖).
I don’t know how long we were unconscious, but I woke up to the sound of Gabe moaning(呻吟).He fell over the steering wheel and his blood was everywhere. The car had landed on its side among some trees that had come down with the slide. On one side of us was the mountain; on the other side was a steep cliff.
I tried to open the door but felt a sharp pain in my chest. I learned later that l had suffered a broken breastbone. My right foot was practically injured. Gabe broke his nose and cheek bones. Parts of his head were broken and the vision in his left eye was damaged. Our only way out was through the driver’s side window. Neither of us remember doing it, but somehow, finally, we both managed to crawl out of the car.
We sat on a log and considered our options. Our phones were thrown faraway in the accident, and couldn’t be found. It was 900 feet straight up back to the highway. All we could do was yell for help.

Running has always been a big part of my life. It was an easy and cheap way to stay healthy when I was a teenager and at university. As I got older, I kept running though I took on the responsibilities of being a mom, having a job and other hobbies. Running was a fun activity that I could do quickly and then get back to my busy day.
When I moved to a new city, I was excited about trying new foods, visiting new places, meeting new people and having new experiences. But, I also felt lonely and really wanted to make new friends. I joined a book club and a dinner group. But after a few months, I still felt like I hadn’t made any close friends.
One day, someone asked me if I wanted to run in a half marathon. Without thinking, I said, “Sure, count me in!” A half marathon is 13.1 miles, which is a lot longer than the three miles I usually ran. I was a bit scared, but also excited.
After the shock wore off, I started to learn everything about running a half marathon. I even bought my first pair of really good running shoes. They were the most expensive shoes I’d ever owned. I was ready to start training with them.
My new running friends picked me up at my house, and we started to jog together. I took it slow at first, running one mile, then two. They taught me how to run properly and how to drink enough water. I learned new words like chafing, carb loading, strides, and electrolytes. I slowly built up to running three, four and five miles. Running seven miles straight felt like climbing a really high mountain, and I started to love the feeling I got after a long run.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________It was Lauren’s birthday and she told everyone in our class that there would be a magician. I really didn’t want to go because I always felt very nervous and scared if I had to go anywhere there would be lots of people (like basically everywhere). Also because the day before my dad had told me that sometimes magicians cut people in half. I cried a lot when we got there so Mum said I could stay next to her.
But when the magician got there we all had to go and sit down on the floor to watch the magic. He said “Hello, boys and girls! I’m Magic Andy!” in the loudest voice ever. Then he made everyone shout “Hello, Magic Andy! ”at him again and again, louder and louder, only I couldn’t open my mouth to say anything so I couldn’t join in.
Then Magic Andy said, “Now, who would like to be my special magical assistant?” And straight away I thought, Not Me. I don't like standing up in front of people, I don't like anyone looking at me, and I had decided by then that I didn't like magicians very much either. So everyone put their hands up apart from me. And it was a bit like being in An Actual Nightmare (噩梦) because Magic Andy did something I thought was against the law - he picked me to be his volunteer. The only person without a raised hand who really did not want to be his volunteer.
Everyone turned and stared, and I felt like they were playing a trick on me or something, because I had accidentally volunteered myself by Definitely Not Volunteering. I felt hot and dizzy and I couldn't move my head to see if Mum was behind me. I was frozen to the spot but someone helped me up to the front and everyone was clapping.
