Actually, assistive technology (AT) tools for reading can also be useful to students who just need some extra assistance to aid reading fluency or comprehension. These tools are inexpensive and easy to find. They open up the wonderful world of reading, making text accessible to students of all abilities. But with so many tools out there, it’s not always easy to know which ones to use.
To help, here’s a guide to some best ones.
Graphic organizers
They are visual representations, like diagrams and mind maps, of ideas and concepts. You can use graphic organizers to help with comprehension while reading. Graphic organizers can be digital or pen and paper.
Annotation aids
They let you take notes and write comments while reading. This can make it easier to keep information. Annotation aids can be part of software or apps, or they can be traditional pens, markers, and sticky notes.
Display control
It allows you to control how text is displayed. When reading on a screen, you can change the font(字体), font size, and spacing of text. You can also cover parts of the screen to lessen distractions(干扰) while reading.
Text-to-speech (TTS)
It lets you see text and hear it read aloud at the same time. To use this tool, you click on words, and you’ll hear the words read by computer-generated voices. You can even read after it and record your own voice. TTS can also be used to change any digital text files into audio files.
Optical character recognition (OCR)
It can read aloud text from images and pictures. You can use OCR by taking photos of worksheets, paper documents, and even objects like street signs. Like TTS, OCR uses computer-generated voices.
Keep in mind that using AT reading tools won’t prevent people from learning to read. For example, experts say audiobooks can actually help kids become better readers.
1. If a reader prefers taking his feelings down while reading, he’d better use ________.A.graphic organizers | B.annotation aids |
C.display control | D.text-to-speech |

Huang was born in 1269 in Jiangsu Province. Sadly, when he was young, his parents died and he lived a poor life. But then, a nice man from Zhejiang Province adopted (收养) him and took care of him. The kind man was impressed by the boy’s talent. Later Huang began to learn painting under the guidance of Zhao Mengfu.
Between the ages of 50 and 62, Huang often travelled in nature. During the long-term travelling, he developed an interest in rivers and mountains. When living in Songjiang, Huang often watched and enjoyed the fantastic scenery there. Sometimes he sat in the mountains all day, even forgetting to eat and have a rest. While enjoying the beauty of nature, he got lots of good ideas about what to paint.
Huang drew lots of paintings during his later life. But most of them have gone missing over the centuries. Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (《富春山居图》) is one of the few surviving works and it is considered to be among his greatest works. It describes the autumn scenery along Fuchun River in southern China with ink and wash. After years of efforts, Huang finished painting Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains. Unluckily, this painting was later burnt into two pieces. Now, the two pieces are carefully kept in two different museums.
During Huang’s life, he made great achievements in painting. Because of his great ability in art, Huang was considered one of the Four Great Masters of the Yuan Dynasty.

Chair Transformation Number 20B, made in 1996-by Lucas Samaras
Here, Samaras explores the double meaning of "flight", referring to both the starlike form created by the stacked chairs, and the movement of a single chair moving through space. From different viewpoints, the sculpture appears to be upright, leaning back, or springing forward. From the side, it even appears like a zigzagging(之字形的)line.
Typewriter Eraser, Scale X, made in 1998-by Coosje van Bruggen
The artist chose the typewriter eraser as his model for this work based upon childhood memories of playing with the object in his father's office. Here the brush arcs(作弧形运动)back, conveying a sense of motion, as if the wheel-like eraser were rolling down the hill and making its way towards the gate of the garden.
Moondog, model 1974, made in 1998-1999-by Tony Smith
The title itself comes from two sources: Moondog was the name of a blind poet and folk musician who lived in New York City, and Smith has also compared this sculpture to Dog Barking at the Moon, a painting by Joan Miro. He first created Moondog in 1974 as a 33-inch cardboard model and cast it in bronze as a garden sculpture in 1980. This version was designed by Smith, but it was not completed until after his death.
Cheval Rouge (Red Horse), made in 1964-by Alexander Calder
During the last two decades of his life, Alexander Calder devoted his greatest efforts to large- scale mobiles and stabiles(立式抽象派雕塑), many of which have become popular public landmarks in cities around the world. Here the silky legs and tensile(张力的)up-thrust "neck" recall the power of a horse. This stabile reflects Calder’s statement: "I want to make things that are fun to look at."
1. What can we learn about the sculpture Moondog?A.It was originally intended for a garden. | B.It was the only work of its creator. |

Every year London’s Royal College of Art (RCA) organizes its Secret exhibition and sale. The idea behind it is simple. The College invites both established, well-known artists and young art students to create an original piece of art based on just two rules — the work must be done on a postcard and must be signed on the back in order to keep the artists’ identity a secret. All the cards are exhibited for a week and then sold in a one-day sale at a price of just £40 each.
Since the first exhibition, Secret has really captured the public’s imagination. Now over 1,000 artists take part in the event each year. The postcards can be viewed in person at the RCA or online. Part of the fun is deciding which of them is by a famous artist or designer, and which is by a hard-up art student. Buyers could end up with a great investment or just a pretty picture by a student the public has never heard of.
Secret was set up in 1994 and was the brainchild of an RCA student who wanted to help raise funds for fine art students at the college. Since its beginnings, over one million pounds has been raised for the Royal College of Art Fine Art Student Award Fund. The money has helped hundreds of students in the early stages of their career. Professor Glynn Williams, Head of Fine Art of the RCA said: “RCA Secret is about securing the future of the next generation of artists and when the public buy postcards at the event they are helping to make this possible. It’s one of the fairest art sales in the world — everyone has an equal chance of getting a big name.”
As well as raising much-needed funds for the students at the College, RCA Secret has attracted loyal support from a group of art lovers who have been visiting the show since it started. It is not only one of the most popular events at the RCA, but it has also developed into an important date in the British art calendar.
1. Which of the following statements is true of the art works at Secret?A.They are all exhibited online. | B.They are sold at a fixed price. |

【推荐3】Four of the best British foodie gatherings
Scottish Wild Food Festival
If you’ve wondered if anything in there would make a tasty soup, then the Scottish Wild Food Festival (adult £16, child 5-13 £2, family £30) should be in your calendar. The festival focuses on the local, in-season and kind to the planet. Hosted at Tir Na Nóg, six miles east of the West Highland Way, the weekend makes a great start (or end) to a hike.
Ludlow Castle Food Festival
The lovely setting of Ludlow Castle is a great place for a food festival (adult £10, child 5-13 £4, family £26). It is a real treat in many ways. There are over 100 stalls (摊位) selling samples of country fare such as Hereford beef pie to all comers. A cheese-rolling game down the castle mound (堤) was great fun. Plus there are bands and poetry readings with food themes, too.
Sheffield Food Festival
Sheffield Food Festival (free) is held each June in the city centre. Local vendors (摊主) have everything on offer from Caribbean fusion dishes to specialty focaccia. Heeley City Farm, a charitable city centre farm, is my favourite producer with its organic produce and focus on sustainability. There is, of course, plenty of craft beer, too.
Bolton Food & Drink Festival
Love food? Enjoy cuisines from every corner of the world? Well, Bolton Food & Drink Festival (free) is a food lover’s dream. It takes place in December. As soon as you enter the Market Square your sense of smell and taste will be in overdrive with Greek, Chinese and Indian cuisines, etc. You could learn a few cooking skills from celebrity chefs (名厨) as well.
1. What’s the lowest cost for a couple with a four-year-old son to visit Scottish Wild Food Festival?A.£30. | B.£34. | C.£32. | D.£18. |
A.Eat food for free. | B.Enjoy food culture. |
C.Defend the castle. | D.Join music bands. |
A.They serve organic food. | B.They teach visitors cooking skills. |
C.They don’t charge admission fees. | D.They are held at the same time annually. |
