In the eastern United States, one of the existing types was that commonly known under the Algonkian name of wigwam in which the Iroquois Indians lived. The wigwams were of wagon-top shape with straight sides and ends, made by bending young trees to form the round shape. Over this shape pieces of tree bark were laid to protect the Indians from bad weather. Over the bark dried grass was added. A small hole allowed smoke to escape from the top. Doorways at each end served also as windows. The Iroquois Indians built trunk walls all around their villages. The wall had only one opening. They could quickly close this opening if their enemies came near.
Interestingly, the Choctaw Indians in Mississippi also lived in a wigwam of a most primitive(原始的) construction, but different from those of the Iroquois Indians. The Choctaw Indians’ wigwams, made from mud, cane and straw, were in the form of a bee-hive. The covering was made of a long, tough grass. A post in the centre supported the roof. A hole in the top admitted the light, and allowed the smoke to pass out.
The tipi tent-housing of the upper lake and plains area was put up with poles set lightly in the ground, tied together near the top, and covered with bark and grass in the lake country. It was easily portable, and two women could set it up or take it down within an hour.
The Pawnee, Mandan and other Indian tribes (部落) along the Missouri built solid ring-shaped structures of trunk, covered with earth and dried grass, housing a dozen families.
The Wichita and other tribes of the Texas border built large ring-shaped houses covered with dried grass.
Apart from the regular housing, almost every tribe had some style of housing.

She completed the adventure with her geology teacher and two other companions. Each of them carried 30 kilograms of supplies. At times temperatures fell to -45C during the 320-kilometre trip. But they made it in ten days, two days less than her famous father, David Adams' time record for the same walk.
“It is a really good feeling, more of an achievement,” said Alicia Adams after coming to the end of her adventure. “The winds were like angry beasts roaring behind us. The trip seemed endless and there was nothing in sight: no buildings, no people, and no animals. Sometimes we had to walk across lakes covered with thin ice, which is the deadliest threat.”
David Adams is a top British explorer, who reached both the South and North poles on foot. He also set a series of hot air-balloon records and climbed the highest mountain on every continent. “I take pride in what she has achieved but a bit annoyed that she has beaten my time,” her father said playfully.
Asked if there would be any future joint adventures, the dad joked, “I think I would be struggling to keep up with her now.”
Alicia returned to Britain last week where she faces a more normal task of going to school. And she said her achievement would not necessarily mark the start of a life-long exploration. “Going to school is on top of my list,” she said.

Microphone? Check. Headphones? Ready. A story you just can’t stop talking about? Got it! Yup, it’s time again for NPR’s Student Podcast (播客) Challenge. And we’re here to announce the opening bell of year six of this annual competition.
In our first half-decade, we’ve listened to podcasts from more than 80,000 young people all over the country. Students have deeply poured into their microphones personal stories about their families or their identities and serious issues, like how changing climate is impacting lives. On our end, we’ve listened to your feedback each year — great suggestions that have brought our ongoing College Podcast Challenge, and a special prize last year for the best podcast about mental health.

Our judges will choose winners in three categories: grade four, grades five through eight, and grades nine through twelve.

And don’t forget all the tips, advice and lesson plans we’ve compiled over the years, especially the rules around the maximum length of eight minutes, and about the use of music.
