Western people say “Excuse me ” more often than we Chinese. In China, “Excuse me” is only to    1    (道歉) when a person has done something    2     or has hurt someone else. In the West, people say it when they just want to pass in f    3    of someone, or when they find themselves late for a    4    (宗教的) celebration. They also say “Thank U” more readily. Even at home the husband will thank his wife when she gives him a g    5     of water “Thank U” means you are    6    (感激的) to people for what they have done for you, no    7     how small it is. If you say “Excuse me” and “Thank U” in a friendly manner, you will have    8     with and get a    9     well with each other and add to some warm feelings between people. So just be polite and make it your     10    (强项).

So why has English changed over time?     1     all languages change and develop when cultures meet and     2     with each other. At first the English spoken in England between AD 450 and 1150 was based more on German than the English we speak at     3    .

Old English is very different     1     the English we speak nowadays. In fact, it is certain that we would not be     2     to understand it if we heard it today.     3     the 10th century, Old English was the official language of England. The language     4     of an Anglo-Saxon base plus words from the languages of Denmark and Norway. When we speak English today, we sometimes find     5     hard to decide which words or phrases to use. This is     6     many pairs of words and phrases have similar meanings in English, for     7    , pick up and lift up. These kinds of pairs developed because each word or phrase came from a     8     language. Pick came from Anglo-Saxon, and lift from Norse.
