A group of researchers and scientists from China and other countries are working together to help increase    1    (appreciate) of China’s ancient cultural heritage. They are recording and collecting digital images of cultural relics from the Magao Caves,    2     were a key stop along the Silk Road throughout China’s ancient history. Nearly 500,000 high-quality digital photographs    3    (produce) since the international project started in 1994.

The Magao Caves have long been    4     meeting point for different cultures. Today, the caves are just as international as they    5    (be) at the time when people travelled the Silk Road. Tourists from all over the world visit Dunhuang to see the caves, and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles has even reproduced a copy of the caves and paintings for people    6    (admire) in America.

By    7    (share) so many digital photos over the Internet, the group hopes to promote even    8    (wide) interest around the world in China's ancient history, culture, and traditions. They also hope to further educate people about the importance of safeguarding historic and     9    (culture) relics. As one researcher who is working    10     the project explains, “Appreciating the cultural heritage is very important for international communication and understanding.”

Pan Shixue, a silversmith (银匠) in Maliao village in Guizhou Province, used to hope that people could live     1     rich life in his village, where nobody had to work far away from home. Now his dream has come true.

Maliao village is famous     2     its silver jewelry. In fact, the Miao ethnic silversmith technique     3    (list) as one of the first batches of China’s national-level intangible cultural heritage in 2006. But with cheaper, machine-made trinkets (小首饰)     4    (rule) the market, they couldn’t rely on the old technique to survive.

At that time, most people in the village lived below the poverty line,     5     means they could simply afford food and     6    (base) clothing, but seldom purchase things like bicycles or televisions. So many villagers left their hometown     7    (hopeless). But in 2018, the government allocated (划拨) 580,000 yuan of poverty funds     8    (set) up the Silverware and Embroidery Workshop of Maliao Village, helping Maliao villagers fight poverty with their own crafts.

Since that year, most young craftsmen     9    (return) to their hometown. With the help of the government, they learned fashion trends and how to meet customers’ various     10    (request). Instead of holding on to old ideas and existing design, the villagers improved their skills and made their products customized (定制).
