Kaitlin Riffel, a US girl, started her dream to end poverty (贫困) when she visited the Fresno Rescue Mission, a shelter (庇护所) for the homeless and those in need. There she realised there were many people in the world who didn’t have a home or food. And she knew there was something she had to do about that.
At age 8, she started raising money to build a playground. It took her sisters and her two years to raise $365. They started small but they knew they wanted to do something to make a difference. The amount jumped to $80,000 the following year after the girls teamed up with friends, and the playground was built in 2013. It encouraged Kaitlin to found Kids on a Mission, a kid-powered organisation that has helped hundreds of people living in poverty in the US and abroad.
The work overseas started when Kaitlin, then 13, visited El Salvador in Central America. People there didn’t have enough food and many families lived in shelters made of cardboards and some newspapers. Some people even drank dirty water. Kids on a Mission mainly provides clean drinking water for people living in poverty. Children and adult volunteers dig wells and also provide food and clothes.
Kids on a Mission is ready to give children larger leadership roles within the organisation now that Kaitlin, at age 16 now, is a junior in high school. She may not play as big of a role in the organisation if she moves away for college. She understands that by giving and having a huge heart, she’s not only changing the hearts of people in this society, but also changing the world.

Thousands of donkeys and mules work in the brick kilns (砖窑) in Egypt, of which there are approximately 1,000, carrying l.4 to 1.6 tonnes of bricks and moving at an intense pace to prevent unfired bricks from cracking in the heat. Due to a lack of expert veterinary (兽医) care, many of these animals are suffering intense pain from harness wounds, beatings, teeth and hoof issues and parasitic diseases spread by flies.
Now a collaboration between UK charity Safe Haven for Donkeys and Egyptian community development charity the Bridge Foundation is providing much-needed relief to these animals. The project includes a mobile veterinary clinic which treats common injuries and infections and trains owners on how to best look after their donkeys and mules.
Safe Haven for Donkeys CEO Andy Foxcroft said, “Currently, no other animal welfare charity provides veterinary interventions in these particular kilns, hence the need for Safe Haven’s expertise, on the ground, treating sick and injured animals and providing training for owners and local professionals (vets and farriers). This first year is vital as we hope to make a lasting impact by reducing the unnecessary suffering of working animals which sadly is all too common a feature in the brick kilns.”
Safe Haven for Donkeys’ work, which helps an estimated 10,000 animals a year is made possible by charitable donations that fund the treatment and training that they offer. You can donate at safehavenAdonkeys.org.

Pang and about 180 volunteers wore aprons and sharpened their cooking skills to make 4,000 dumplings, 700 noodle stir-fries, and 700 liters of curry in just four hours on a cold morning in Borough Market.
Now in its third year, the aim of the event, which is called Wok for 1,000, is to raise awareness of food waste and food shortage throughout the United Kingdom. Pang, who founded School of Wok in London’s Covent Garden, led a team of experienced chefs in teaching volunteers how to cook the dishes. The food materials used at the event were donated by School of Wok^ suppliers as well as from stallholders (摊主) in Borough Market.
“As soon as we met Plan Zheroes, it was clear to me that it was a charity we wanted to raise money for,” said Pang. “So, not only are we creating thousands of meals but, at the same time, we are raising around 5,000 to 6,000 pounds for a very small charity doing a huge job.’’

When we arrived at Haleakala National Park, we were suggested to watch the early morning sunrise. I was lost in the sightseeing that afternoon so I could hardly wait to meet the sunrise. In the next morning we all jumped out of the bed very early at 3 o’clock and walked to the rocks by the seaside. In the first half an hour we imagined.
how wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when the light touched our skin so we waited and waited. However, another half an hour later I gradually lost my patience since there was nothing but the chilly darkness and I felt that I was frozen to death. But my friends were still extremely cheerful.
Nearly another one hour later, “Amazing!” a word burst out from Judy and we all shouted to welcome the light orange greatness which is really unbelievable. Until today I dare say that it is the most impressive(印象深刻的)sunrise in my life. However, waiting in the morning darkness is also the one I cannot wipe out forever.

No mater where I was or what I was doing, it was overhead like a dark cloud, waiting for just the right opportunity to break open and destroy my world.
I liked painting. Losing myself in painting filled me with peace. Painting provided me with the only place where I could escape from those threatening words.
When I was 2l years old, my right eye went blind. Precisely three months after I was 25, I had a massive hemorrhage (大出血) in my left eye because of an accident. For the next twenty years, vision came and went. I went through many eye operations in an attempt to keep my vision. But after one final operation, I lost the battle and all remaining vision. And I buried all dreams of painting.
Desperate, I enrolled in (注册) a sixteen-week program for the blind and visually impaired (视力受损).I learned personal adjustment and the use of a computer with adaptive software. A whole new world opened up to me through this program as a turning point.
“Jaws and Window-Eyes are leading software for the blind.” my instructor told me. “You can use the Internet, e-mail and Microsoft with all its tools and features.” It’s amazing! Hope went up for the first time in years. “By learning how to use hot keys to control the mouse, you can use Microsoft Access, Excel and PowerPoint,” my instructor added.
For the next several years, I learned that when one door closes, another door opens. There are plenty of choices available for the blind and visually impaired through the gift of technology. Not only do I have a speaking computer, but I have a speaking watch, alarm clock and calculator.

The discovery came during a regular day on the job as Andrea Lessing, a goodwill employee, was performing her routine quality examination on closing items on the sales floor. As she pulled out two sweaters tied together from a donation box, she felt something heavy left. She first assumed the items were just books. When she pulled the sweaters apart, to her astonishment, she found lots of envelopes filled with $100 bills. The cash was in $100 bills and totaled $ 42,000 dollars.
Andrea Lessing is used to discovering unique treasures in the varied collection of donated items her store receives daily. She always tries to be a good example to her daughter, so she immediately did the right thing and reported the cash finding. Luckily, the store's manager was then able to locate and return the money to the donator who had mistakenly placed the cash in the wrong box.
Andrea, mother of a six year old girl, admitted it was hard for her to do with that much money. Some might have thought that it was Andrea's lucky day, having a small fortune. However, the temptation to keep the cash by herself was just a passing thought. Andrea's honest nature inspired her to do the right thing.
Without hesitation, she handed the cash over to the store's manager so they could find the right owner. Andrea was not expecting a reward, but the owner of the money surprised her with a 1000 reward. Andrea was teary eyed and overcome with joy as her “good deed” flowed right back to her. She plans to spend part of the reward money on a memorable birthday party for her daughter.

When Cruse asked him what was wrong, the boy named Kingsly explained that he wasn’t able to complete his reading assignment because his parents were busy with his four siblings (兄弟姐妹) at home. It was hard to find one-on-one time to practice reading with his mom or dad.
An idea popped into Cruse’s mind. He received permission from the 6-year-old boy’s teacher, Alex Bakley, to show up at her kindergarten classroom the following week. When he walked in, Kingsly shouted, “Hey, that’s my bus driver!”
“We went into a quiet corner and began reading together,” Cruse said. “He read to me, and I read to him. We read together, and from there, it took on a life of its own. A second student wanted to read to me, then a third.”
Now Cruse volunteers to help Bakley’s 18 kindergarten students with reading two days a week, and on a third day, he tutors the school’s first- and second-graders.
“I have never wanted to be anything other than a bus driver. Because I live 40 miles away, it doesn’t make sense for me to drive home after delivering students. Instead, I’d hang out at the gym, go to the library or sit in my car and go to sleep to fill up the time,” Cruse said. It wasn’t until he offered to help the kindergartner on his bus last year that he realized there was something more rewarding he could be doing.
Kingsly has been more excited about books since he started reading with Cruse. “Kingsly had a rough time with reading at the beginning of the school year, but he’s doing much better because of this fun one-on-one time,” Bakley said.
What started out as a way to kill time has now blossomed into a way to make a difference in the hearts of children.

She remembered her son looking at her for a moment before saying, “Let’s feed the homeless.” She thought he meant that he wanted to donate cans, or spend a day volunteering at a soup kitchen. But Jaxson had something bigger in mind.
“They need a full Easter meal like we do,” he said. LaKeicee asked him how many people he wanted to feed. “As many as possible,” Jaxson replied. “That’s how it all began,” LaKeicee recalled. “He’s been going ever since.”
Jaxson Turner, now 13, is the founder of his own charity—N2Y2C, a nonprofit he has been running with his mother’s help for three years. He has four main projects: feeding the homeless, domestic violence awareness, back to school supplies for classmates in need, and a Christmas project in partnership with Samaritan Inn.
Jaxson’s inspiration came from seeing people on corners begging for food. He saw it throughout the city and realized that people in need were everywhere. He also grew up cooking with his mother, who made a big Sunday dinner every week, and he wanted to give that experience to other people.
Jaxson raised money through grassroots efforts like lemonade stands and GoFundMe pages. Some of it was used to buy school supplies for over 100 kids a year, and some was used for a Christmas party he threw for the kids staying at Samaritan Inn, a homeless shelter in McKinney.
In total, he has raised $72,444 for N2Y2C project. N2Y2C doesn’t have a website, but it’s coming. Most of the words are spread over social media, but Jaxson has big plans for the future. As LaKeicee says, there’s always someone out there who needs help, and she is honored to help her son do it.
