Kaitlin Riffel, a US girl, started her dream to end poverty (贫困) when she visited the Fresno Rescue Mission, a shelter (庇护所) for the homeless and those in need. There she realised there were many people in the world who didn’t have a home or food. And she knew there was something she had to do about that.

At age 8, she started raising money to build a playground. It took her sisters and her two years to raise $365. They started small but they knew they wanted to do something to make a difference. The amount jumped to $80,000 the following year after the girls teamed up with friends, and the playground was built in 2013. It encouraged Kaitlin to found Kids on a Mission, a kid-powered organisation that has helped hundreds of people living in poverty in the US and abroad.

The work overseas started when Kaitlin, then 13, visited El Salvador in Central America. People there didn’t have enough food and many families lived in shelters made of cardboards and some newspapers. Some people even drank dirty water. Kids on a Mission mainly provides clean drinking water for people living in poverty. Children and adult volunteers dig wells and also provide food and clothes.

Kids on a Mission is ready to give children larger leadership roles within the organisation now that Kaitlin, at age 16 now, is a junior in high school. She may not play as big of a role in the organisation if she moves away for college. She understands that by giving and having a huge heart, she’s not only changing the hearts of people in this society, but also changing the world.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要说明了从事志愿活动有助于缓解压力和孤独,有利于身心健康。

【推荐1】In our modern world, high pressure of work and life has led to the practice of social distancing, creating feelings of stress and isolation (孤独) in many of us. Some people have been hit particularly hard, including the elderly, parents busy with work and child care, and students who have lots of homework.    1    .

New research suggests that volunteers aren’t just helping the communities.     2    . Compared to people who didn’t volunteer, people who had volunteered were more satisfied with their lives and thought their overall health as better. Additionally, people who volunteered more often experienced greater benefits.

3    , the researchers compared it to the effects of people’s income. For a participant earning an average middle-class salary, volunteering was basically “worth” about $ 1, 100 per year. That means volunteering would make someone as happy as having an extra $ 1,100.

Why does volunteering support our mental (精神的) health? Firstly, volunteering appears to be really beneficial—when we help others, we are likely to experience what researchers call a “warm glow.” Secondly, volunteering is likely to help increase our sense of social connection, which is particularly true for older adults.     4    . You are doing something new and you will gain new skills in other parts of life, and the young adults can try out leadership opportunities in various practices.

5    . So, if you’ve been feeling upset or out of sorts lately, join some volunteering activities, which will definitely bring you a sense of control and comfort no matter the frequency or the type of work.

A.Instead of stressing its mental advantages
B.To get a sense of how large the benefits are
C.They also experience improvement in their mental health
D.Volunteering can be a way to benefit our whole well-being
E.Thirdly, people who started to volunteer became happier over time
F.Finally, volunteering can help build professional skills and leadership
G.To relieve the pressure, many people turn to volunteering to make a difference

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一个为驴提供救助的保护组织Safe Haven for Donkeys。

【推荐2】First established in 2000 to help thousands of working donkeys in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, the charity Safe Haven for Donkeys has begun working with an Egyptian partner organisation, the Bridge Foundation, to provide care to the donkeys in the El Saf region of Egypt.

Thousands of donkeys and mules work in the brick kilns (砖窑) in Egypt, of which there are approximately 1,000, carrying l.4 to 1.6 tonnes of bricks and moving at an intense pace to prevent unfired bricks from cracking in the heat. Due to a lack of expert veterinary (兽医) care, many of these animals are suffering intense pain from harness wounds, beatings, teeth and hoof issues and parasitic diseases spread by flies.

Now a collaboration between UK charity Safe Haven for Donkeys and Egyptian community development charity the Bridge Foundation is providing much-needed relief to these animals. The project includes a mobile veterinary clinic which treats common injuries and infections and trains owners on how to best look after their donkeys and mules.

Safe Haven for Donkeys CEO Andy Foxcroft said, “Currently, no other animal welfare charity provides veterinary interventions in these particular kilns, hence the need for Safe Haven’s expertise, on the ground, treating sick and injured animals and providing training for owners and local professionals (vets and farriers). This first year is vital as we hope to make a lasting impact by reducing the unnecessary suffering of working animals which sadly is all too common a feature in the brick kilns.”

Safe Haven for Donkeys’ work, which helps an estimated 10,000 animals a year is made possible by charitable donations that fund the treatment and training that they offer. You can donate at safehavenAdonkeys.org.

【推荐3】Chef Jeremy Pang and a team of helpers are on a task to help feed London’s homeless and those facing food shortage in London. Pang and about 180 volunteers wore aprons and sharpened their cooking skills to make 4,000 dumplings, 700 noodle stir-fries, and 700 liters of curry in just four hours on a cold morning in Borough Market.

Now in its third year, the aim of the event, which is called Wok for 1,000, is to raise awareness of food waste and food shortage throughout the United Kingdom. Pang, who founded School of Wok in London’s Covent Garden, led a team of experienced chefs in teaching volunteers how to cook the dishes. The hot meals were then packed up and loaded into trucks so they could be distributed to those in need.

The event was part of Pang’s work to support the charity (慈善组织) Plan Zheroes, which aims to help connect food businesses with charities in order to redistribute surplus (过剩的) food and support measures to help prevent food waste. “1,300 meals get distributed to around 10 charities across London who are fighting food shortage,” Pang said. “The idea is that with ‘small steps for big changes’, an event like this can show people that one person can easily cook for 10 people and feed a lot of people in need.”

The food materials used at the event were donated by School of Wok^ suppliers as well as from stallholders (摊主) in Borough Market.

“As soon as we met Plan Zheroes, it was clear to me that it was a charity we wanted to raise money for,” said Pang. “So, not only are we creating thousands of meals but, at the same time, we are raising around 5,000 to 6,000 pounds for a very small charity doing a huge job.’’
