The art of growing bald gracefully

There are three important days in every bald(ing) man’s life: The day you realize you’re losing your hair, the day you realize you should shave off what remains, and the day you finally do.     1     (grow) bald gracefully is about reducing the gap between these milestones as far as possible. I learned this the hard way.

My fear     2     all hairless men look the same is reinforced by the fact that people keep saying I look like my dad. No one     3     (note) this resemblance before. Now, suddenly, we`re like two shiny-headed. bearded peas in a pod. There is a certain poetic justice here, and I suffer regular flashbacks to the bald jokes I’d tell at my dad’s expense.

Whether he’s     4     (blame) for my hairline is matter of debate. Studies of identical twins have found that heredity (遗传) factors account for around 80% of men’s tendency to go bald,     5     the genetics are poorly understood. An old wives’ tale dictates that hair loss is passed down via the mother,     6     means your maternal grandfather’s hairline is the best predictor of your own.

Lifestyle factors can play a part, and I often wonder whether my fate was hastened by eating trans fats and not sleeping enough, or by living in big cities during some of its most seriously     7     (pollute) years. But my hairline’s retreat was likely predestined. As such, I am at peace with it. Although I didn’t grow bald gracefully, I can still aspire to be bald with grace.

Anton was the first among my friends     8     (go) bald. While I had the luxury of holding out until aged 35, he was 18 when he first found clumps of hair on the pillow. Anton’s advice for me and fellow newcomers is as follows: Moisturize (滋润) your head daily, shave it every few days and wear hats to protect against the sun and heat loss alike. If you have a beard, keep it     9     (brush); if you’re muscly, be aware of terrifying people and disarm them with a smile. And remember, he concluded, the way you carry yourself matters more than     10     is — or isn’t — growing from the top of your head.

If life is a river, it is the most exciting is that     1     section of adolescence.

Flowing a trickle of     2    (children), life began to     3    (rest), personality spray, a piece after piece of Pentium the melody of youth. It is surging, it's always a time of the wild and intractable, slap embankment, heaving ship of life.

As an individual, water is gentle and weak, often easily     4    (conquer) by other objects. As group. The water is tough, it can constantly wear stone,     5     fear of breaking off the mountains. So, water is the most talked about team spirit. Its initial exploration may be blind, but once it determines the future direction of its own, it will not hesitate to rush up, in the earth sketched out a trail of pioneers.

A hedge     6     keeps friendship green. It is not big, it has a strong     7    (vitalize), with flexible ways of showing the wisdom of waves, lakes, rivers, oceans, and even people's sweat and the eyes are the soul of the container. It corrects the coordinates of human relationships with detachment. So water is a gentleman in all things.

The water of youth has never been so many scruples and rules and regulations, once the old river bed can not break the outbreak of youth,     8    (break)through the shackles, and create a new channel. Its thorough reflection of the world's bright, its     9    (simple)is often easy to cause sediment mixed, its courage to frighten the road ahead of the trip stone, its unruly and often hurt innocent. Simple and complex intertwined, creation and destruction of     10     same life, this is the youth, a colorful journey of life.

【推荐2】First thing in the morning, I check the social networking website Facebook, only to see how I’ve already fallen behind. A workmate has written a new book. Two of my     1     (hero) have completed a big project. One of my old college friends posted a video for an online program she     2     (take)at the moment. She looks successful, shiny and     3     (charm) while I’m still in bed, bleary-eyed.

Am I really falling behind? Did these people post any of these things     4     (make) me feel bad? Of course not. But if I'm not careful, it's    5     (terribl) easy to see social media as     6     reminder of all the things i'm not doing and dreams I'm not fulfilling.

But     7     isn't a social media problem. It's a comparison problem. it's all about how I think about it.

And I know it's not just me. Our culture is full of comparisons, and it's hard not to look around     8     what other people are doing with their short time, and ask, "What about me?"

But all these years I've learned one thing: don't compare your insides with someone else's outsides. You have no idea     9     it took for other people to get where they are. Don't act as if it was effortless or pure luck. it's much     10     (easy) to look at someone "up there" and be jealous of what they have than to be happy for them and make yours better.

We want our children to succeed in school and, perhaps even more importantly, in life. But the paradox(悖论) is that our children can only truly succeed     1     they first learn how to fail. Consider the finding that world-class figure skaters fall over more often in practice than low-level figure skaters. Why are the really good skaters falling over the most?

The reason is actually quite simple. Top skaters are constantly challenging themselves in practice.     2     (stretch) their limitations, they keep trying their best. They fall over so often, but it is precisely why they learn so fast. Lower-level skaters have a quite different approach. They are always attempting jumps they can already do very easily,     3     (remain) within their comfort zone. This is why they don’t fall over. In a superficial sense, they look successful, because they are always on their feet. Never     4     (fail) in practice prevents them from making progress.

5     is true of skating is also true of life. James Dyson worked through 5,126 prototypes (原型) for his newest vacuum before coming up with the design     6     made his fortune. These failures were essential to the pathway of learning. As Dyson put     7    : “You can’t develop new technologyunless you test new ideas and learn when things go wrong. Failure is essential to invention.”

In healthcare, however, things are very different. Clinicians don’t like to admit to failure, partly because they have strongegos (自我) —particularly the senior doctors—and partly because they fear litigation (诉讼). The consequence is that     8     learning from failure, healthcare often covers up failure. The direct consequence is that the same mistakes     9     (repeat). According to the Journal of Patient Safety, 400,000 people die every year in American hospitals alone due to preventable error.     10     healthcare learns to respond positively to failure, things will not improve.
