For many years I always invented excuses for either picking this    1     gathering that on my trips outdoors. My reward(回报)from these adventures goes beyond just harvesting. Each trip adds another level    2     knowledge. And trips to the woods take me back to the pleasure of my youth-enjoying time in nature on family outings.     3     (grow) up on the farm, I would walk into the woods late in the day, at first only     4     (prove) that I could find my way back. I enjoyed the silence, but listening more carefully brought the woodland sounds of squirrels or wood ducks chattering to protest my presence.

The wind blowing through pine needles(松针)made    5    (quiet) and more peaceful sounds than through oak leaves. The woods became alive with sound when I    6     (final) stopped to listen.

Then my eyes began to see more. Wildflowers only hardly    7     (recognize) at first as a mass of color were later admired for their beauty and occasional scent. Animals became visible (看得见的)after my eyes    8    (train) to notice small movements, patterns out of place with leaves, or just    9     slightest sound that did not fit with the forest floor.

Understanding nature has been a lifelong pursuit. Each visit to the woods is a    10     (remind) for me to appreciate life.

A few weeks ago, a series of deadly earthquakes     1     (strike) Syria and Turkey, causing massive damage. Rescue     2     (worker) continued to search for survivors in the rubble (废墟).

Ali Cakas is a 33-year-old world-famous mountain biker and coach for the Turkish national mountain bike team. He’s also a firefighter, so when     3     natural disasters occurred, he didn’t hesitate to search a collapsed apartment building in Nurdagi, Turkey.

Ali found a little black and white cat and the cat was clearly very happy to see his rescuer. A photo of Ali     4     (wear) a bicycle helmet (头盔) with the cat on his shoulder quickly went viral (走红), attracting animal lovers across the     5     (global).

It seemed the cat had been trapped for several days and nights     6     Ali rescued him, and this grateful cat wasn’t about to let his hero out of his sight! Ali had no choice but     7     (adopt) the animal and bring him home. Ali named the cat Enkez,     8     means “rubble” in Turkish.

Enkaz has now become the unofficial face of Ali’s fire department! The cat seems to be settling into his comfortable new home very nicely, and Ali     9     (frequent) updates his social media pages with pictures of Enkaz enjoying treats. Ali even has set Enkaz up with his own Instagram page so the kitty’s new worldwide fan base can keep up     10     his every move.

Herman Travis, 55, lives in Holly Courts, a low-income neighborhood in San Francisco and he has not so many     1     (possess). Every Tuesday, Travis fills a shopping cart (购物车) with groceries from a local food bank Then he makes home deliveries to his elderly and disabled neighbors. He began doing it in 2007 and when he first started, people were doubtful. They didn’t welcome it as he had expected. “At first people were     2     (caution). They didn’t let me in.”

“However, only after they     3    (get) to really know me were they pleased to see me eventually. But I wish that I had started doing it earlier.” Travis once told me I am one of Travis’ neighbors     4     receive deliveries from him. To some degree, I depend on him to live my life. Like everyone else, on the one hand, I sincerely appreciate his help, and on the other hand, I expect     5     (see) the joy Travis gets out of making     6     (he) rounds. If he didn’t come to see me, I should miss him very much now. When we meet with each other on the way, he may stop to chat with me for some time so I know much about him. He often says it is not so stressful a job. Having kept doing such a thing for about fifteen years already, he is admired and respected by everybody. Some people once asked him,

“Do you think it is worth doing such kinds of things?” He nodded his head, saying, “I think so. ” He’s so kind and warm, always     7     (smile), as if he were doing     8     favor for his own family.

What he does always appeals     9     other people in nearby neighborhoods that have been trying to poach (挖走)Travis for years. They suggest paying him to go and deliver food for them when they run out of food. But he simply wouldn’t do it for money.

It might be a small thing that Travis is doing so, but he does that with big love. It’s     10     (spiritual) rewarding for himself.

I had to wait for them to call number 63 before I could get my food.     1     (give) a plate by a lady, I felt ashamed, embarrassed. I wondered if she thought that I was worse than her.   However, before I knew it, I received my food: a little container with a meal and some pudding. I did not have to look at the woman any more.     2     feeling of shame slowly disappeared.

Ivon suggested that we walk to Bayside. When we arrived, Ivon told me     3     desperately had to use the bathroom. He began to take     4     from his pocket that he wanted to leave with me. I thought it was a phone,     5     it was a knife. “You never know when you have to use this,” he said.

After about twenty minutes, Ivon came back. He suggested     6     we move nearer to the Miami River where it was cooler. I walked down the street,     7     (hold) the plastic bag with my food. We settled down under some coconut trees. He pointed out some police officers     8     (stand) in an area where the     9     (home) used to sleep next to a hotel.

“I guess they didn’t want us next to the hotel. You can’t have people looking     10     of their windows and seeing us,” he said.
