Yakushima
Yakushima, a small island off the coast of southern Kyushu, is often described as magical and enchanting and otherworldly even. Home to some of Japan’s last primeval (原始的) forests, you’ll find the yakusugi, an ancient tree native to the island whose giant roots form alien tentacles (触手), Hiking trails underneath them cover craggy terrain, often fuzzy with moss. The scariest part of it is that no one will ever see it coming. Though technology helps us prepare, but it never actually tells the people when it’s going to hit. It is always estimated but the result is never 100% accurate.
However, that is not the point of this article. Two different natural disasters in two different parts of the world have happened in the past few weeks. One was a major flood that has hit Louisiana in the United States. The other was an earthquake that hit Amatrice, Italy. However, there is a major difference in the news coverage of the two tragedies.
As for the flooding in Louisiana, it is reported that this disaster is the worst to hit the United States since Super-storm Sandy and it’ll cost at least $30 million. In only the first couple of weeks, 13 people had died. However, like me, many people did not hear about this tragic event. I did not learn about it until about three weeks after it happened.
In Italy, however, it covered all media instantly. The earthquake in Italy happened on Tuesday morning. That same day, I was on Twitter and that was all that was over the news feed. Every other post was about the earthquake. Some would have the opinion that Amatrice, Italy was one of the most beautiful towns in that country. I got in deep sorrow because there were more people killed in this quake than the flooding. So far, they have a total of 73 dead and over one hundred missing.
I understand that technically the earthquake in Italy was worse than the floods in Louisiana. However, I believe that if a natural disaster happens, they all should be equally covered and taken equally seriously. We are one world united and should be there for all of the people who are in need of help. We may not be able to accurately predict disasters but, we can surely lend a hand out for the needy.
1. What really concerns the author about the two natural disasters?A.The death and the injured. |
B.The media report. |
C.The government’s responsibility. |
D.Their economic loss. |
A.He didn’t care about the flood. |
B.He felt nervous about the news. |
C.The media didn’t cover it in time. |
D.The flood frightened the author a lot. |
A.Italy isn’t good at predicting the natural disasters. |
B.All natural disasters should be covered equally. |
C.The world should be united into one instantly. |
D.America should help Italy predict natural disasters. |
A.By making a comparison. |
B.By following the time order. |
C.By listing some examples. |
D.By analyzing the causes. |

At one point the woman asked, “So, how have you been?” And the boy --- who could not have been more than 7 or 8 years old ---replied, “Frankly, I’ve been feeling a little depressed lately.”
This incident(小事件) stuck in my mind because it confirmed(证实) my growing belief that children are changing. As far as I can remember, my friends and I didn’t find out we were “depressed” until we were in high school.
The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years. Children don’t seem childlike anymore. Children speak more like adults, dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to. Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say, but it is certainly different. Children as they once were on longer exists. Why?
Human development is based not only on innate biological states, but also on patterns of access to social knowledge. Movement from one social route to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status. Children have always been taught adult secrets, but slowly and in stages: traditionally, we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders.
In the last 30 years, however, a secret-revelation (揭示)machine has been installed in 98 percent of American homes. It is called television. Television passes information indiscriminately to all viewers alike, be they children or adults. Unable to resist the temptation, many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging, more vivid moving pictures.
Communication through print, as a matter of fact, allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access. Reading and writing involve a complex code of symbols that must be memorized and practiced. Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials.

B.a mental state present in all humans, including children |

D.something hardly to be expected in a young child |
A.through connection with society | B.gradually and under guidance(引导) |
C.naturally without being taught | D.through watching television |
A.the widespread influence of television |
B.the poor arrangement of teaching content |
C.the fast pace of human scientific development |
D.the rising standard of living |
A.It enables children to gain more social information |
B.It develops children’s interest in reading and writing. |
C.It helps children to read and write well. |
D.It can control what children are to learn. |
A.He feels their adultlike behavior is so funny |
B.He thinks the change worth our attention |
C.He considers it a rapid development |
D.He is extremely upset about it |

Chinese TV drama Awakening Age, which narrates the story of how the Communist Party of China (CPC) was founded in 1921, ended several months ago, but it remains a hot topic on social media, where discussion shows that it has played a positive role in educating young people about China’s revolutionary history.
The TV series celebrating this year’s 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC has won high praise online. The stories of the young people in the drama — who gave everything, even their lives, to the revolution — have touched a large number of viewers. The storytelling in the show has also been hailed by viewers for successfully showing the depth of the CPC’s history and spirit, as well as the warmth of China and every family in the country.
Many audiences were inspired to find background information about the series and commented that this is their first time to voluntarily learn the history about the founding of the Party and the country. “I read many of Lu Xun’s novels such as A Madman’s Diary when I was in elementary school, but I couldn’t understand why he wrote them or the angry feelings hiding in the characters. After watching the drama, I read these novels again and found that I can now understand what they wanted to convey to readers,” said Li Lin, a 29-year-old viewer.
Some school teachers have been showing video clips from the series in classes to arouse students’ interest in the time period and help them learn more about history.
