Vacation in Scandinavia on a Budget
How do you travel to Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden without blowing a hole in your pocket? Here are some tips for how to experience these beautiful, happy and, yes, expensive countries with as little price shock as possible.
Invest in a good guidebook
Having and using a good guidebook as your main travel tool is essential. The most popular guidebook series is from Lonely Planet — an especially good choice for young budget travelers since they are the original publishers of Europe on a Shoestring. Other options include Rough Guides, The Saury Backpacker and Rick Steves’ Europe. These guidebooks will help you pick the best activities, including walking tours, parks and restaurants for all budgets. They’ll also include maps and heaps of history and local insider knowledge.
Skip the rental car (and book early)
Once you’ve found a good deal for your round-trip airfare, it’s time to book your regional or incountry transportation. Renting a car is going to cost a pretty penny in any Scandinavian country. Instead, use the region’s great public transportation systems, which include a range of affordable options.
As for trains, we recommend obtaining a Eurail Scandinavia Pass that lets you explore Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The best part for budget travellers: If you take an overnight train, there’s no need to pay for a hotel.
The bus is an even more cost-effective mode of transportation, and Scandinavian companies are known to offer clean and comfortable buses that come with bathrooms and free Wi-Fi.
Meanwhile, cyclists will be in heaven: Major cities in Scandinavia offer bike-share programmes and rentals plus bike lanes that are often better tended to than the streets.
Take advantage of free city culture
While you’re spending time in Scandinavia’s great cities, you should enjoy the freebies. Many museums, markets, concerts, outdoor gyms, castles, cathedrals and UNESCO World Heritage sites come without a price tag.
It’s also worth checking out the cost-benefit ratio of a city pass, if you’re visiting one place for more than a few days. For example, in Norway, the Oslo Pass gives you free admission to 30 museums and attractions; free travel on all public transport; free entry to outdoor swimming pools; free walking tours; discounts on sightseeing, concert tickets and ski rentals; and special offers in restaurants, shops, entertainment and leisure venues.

For those who love sports, adventure travel can have a whole different meaning than for those who like history. The physical travel types that you can find include such adventure travel as white water rafting ( 白 浪 漂 流 ), kayaking or climbing and hiking to some mountains somewhere. To the hiker, backpacking across Ireland might be their adventure. For this type of person, adventure travel almost always includes something physical. Often the goal is to push their body’s limits and test their individual endurance (耐力).
For those who less want to climb mountains, adventure travel might mean traveling to Nepal and taking in the local festivals. Wine tasting in Italy is also vacation adventure for the more relaxed traveler who enjoys peace and comfort. Anything that is opposite to the normal scope (范围) of the traveler’s lifestyle defines (定义) adventure.
Adventure travel is not necessarily a one-size-fits-all type of vacation. Adventure depends on the person’s physical limits, how much money the person has and what the person enjoys doing. Going beyond the normal is adventurous for many. If your life is quite busy, then sitting on a beach in the moonlight with your family might be adventure for you. The point is not what you do but that you have a good time and that it is an adventure for YOU — not for the person next to you.
Do not sit home this year when vacation time rolls around. Go beyond your normal routine and try something new. If you usually spend your vacation sunbathing on a beach, try hiking, instead, through the mountains. Look around you, think beyond your comfort zone and head out on an adventure vacation.

“Apart from the exotic outfits and tasty kimchi, I really appreciated local people’s friendliness and the convenient language environment there,” said the 27-year-old woman, who traveled to the country in October 2011 and came back with bags of fashionable dresses and cosmetics.
“We have provided many services to Chinese visitors, including free transport cards, handbooks for individual tourists, and more liberal visa policies.”
“We believe that no country can compare with the ROK in providing services for individual Chinese travelers,” said Zhu Linlin, media manager of the Korea Tourism Organization’s Beijing branch.
Favorable visa policies contribute to the popularity of the ROK as a destination for Chinese tourists. Only a passport and an ID card are needed for a Chinese citizen to get a visa to the ROK.
However, some suggest that ROK hotels should provide special dining rooms for Chinese customers due to different eating habits. “ROK people often cross their legs when they have meals, but for most Chinese people, especially those who are elderly or fat, it’s very hard for them to sit cross-legged without feeling numb.”
In 1998, China granted the ROK approved destination status, which allowed Chinese citizens to travel to the country in tour groups.
According to statistics from China Tourism Academy, the number of Chinese tourists visiting the ROK reached more than 2 million by the end of October 2011, up 19.9 percent compared with that of the same period last year. China recently became the Republic of Korea’s main source of foreign tourists in both number and spending.

The COST
Two nights at Monterey Tides cost $ 710; lunch and a couple of rounds of beers at Dust Bowl Brewing Co. were $ 90; and entry to 17-Mile Drive was $ 10.50 per vehicle.
THE BED
We have stayed at Monterey Tides several times. Its direct beach access to Monterey Bay has kept us coming back. We love falling asleep to the sound of waves cashing. My parents had a room with a king size bed, and my family’s room with two queen-size beds was right next door. The hotel offers facilities including beach-side yoga on Saturday mornings. We saw a group of people stretch into their poses as we chased our kids. Maybe next time.
THE MEAL
I’ve been a fan of Dust Bowl brewing Co. for years. The Turlock, California-based brewery (啤酒厂), opened its Monterey Tap Depot this year in a former train station near Fisherman’s Wharf (码头). Along with a bar inside, there’s an outdoor seating area. We ate a tasty lunch and I chose one of my favourite beers, Hops of Wrath, an Indian pale beer that reminds you of John Steinbeck’s classical novel The Grapes of Wrath.
THE FIND
Cannery Row, another Steinbeck’s novel, takes place in Monterey during the Great Depression. The current Cannery Row is lined with restaurants, hotels, shops and the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. On our trip in early October, we bypassed (绕过) Cannery Row to explore the coast from Pacific Grove south to Asilomar State, which has easy access to tide pools.
THE LESSON LEARNED
When you’ve been somewhere countless times, you sometimes take it for granted, but when you go with someone who has never been there, you see it from a new point of view.
1. What does the author like about Monterey Tides?A.Sleeping in the queen-size bed there. |

C.Hearing the sound of the sea when he sleeps there. |

Moominsummer Madness
By Tove Jansoon
What I love about this book, as a child and still today, is its mix of the fantastical and normal. On the one hand, it’s about a family and their friends all enjoying themselves, quite happy not doing much. On the other hand, it’s about characters that can change into strange shapes, magicians coming down from the moon and strange creatures coming out from the roof. That mix of the familiar and extraordinary informs all my writing.
The Histories
By Herodotus
By the time I was 12, I was attracted by Ancient Greece and Rome. At first, I found the early section of The Histories really boring because it’s like a long story that never gets to the point. In the second half I was rewarded with the stories I’d been waiting for, like the battles of Marathon, Salamis and Thermopylae. Over the years, I came to value the infectious curiosity of the first half and the description of the world in the fifth century BC seen through the eyes of this extraordinary Greek historian.
A Distant Mirror
By Barbara W. Tuchman
Tuchman’s book The Guns of August won the Pulitzer Prize, but it’s this slightly less wellknown work that provided me with a role model for my own writing. Both scholarly (学术的) and interesting, it’s a description of the 14th century in Western Europe and brings medieval civilization (中世纪文明) to life, transporting the reader back to the horror of the Black Death, the Peasants’ Revolt and the Great Papal Schism. I felt I knew what it was like to die of the plague (瘟疫) or to have a sword put through me — real stories told outstandingly.
1. What do we know about Moominsummer Madness?A.It’s both typical and imaginary. |
B.It tells the writer’s life stories. |
C.It’s undervalued by readers. |
D.It features family struggles. |
A.It’s quite stupid. |
B.It’s entertaining. |
C.It’s culturecentered. |
D.It’s hard to understand. |
A.The Histories. |
B.A Distant Mirror. |
C.The Guns of August. |

Norwich, Norfolk
With 31 surviving medieval (中世纪的) churches, Norwich is an easily overlooked historical treasure. Roadside signs show this “A Fine City" and for good reason. The pubs are among the best in English, with the delightful Adam and Eve dating back to 1249. And with an annual arts festival taking place every May, its modern cultural offering makes it far more than a museum piece.
Dungeness, Kent
The only place appointed as a desert in the UK, Dungeness is completely unique. Located on the Kent coast, its windswept beaches and inland nature reserve, coupled with big skies and sea air, make it the perfect place to spend an afternoon getting the freshest air imaginable. The coastal village with the same name is something of a time channel, with a railway carrying passengers along the coast to the town of Hythe.
Manchester
Northern England’s cities often get unfairly crowded together, but there’s a distinctiveness between Leeds, Bradford, Liverpool and Manchester that makes them all worth a visit. It's the latter, though, that’s the big hitter. The vibrant Northern Quarter is great for shopping, while places such as Bridgewater Hall, Home and the Albert Hall make it the place for culture lovers. Forget complaints about the wet weather in England; Manchester is the real deal.
Glasgow
It’s easy to overlook Glasgow, which is the charm of Edinburgh. But as Scotland’s largest city it easily matches the capital when it comes to architecture, art and culture. The Kelvin grove Art Gallery is world-class, while the West End’s shops and bars are the perfect places to spend a relaxing afternoon. With a thriving music scene and top restaurants like the award-winning Stravaigin, it’s undoubtedly one of the country’s best destinations for a city break.
