Marie had always dreamed of becoming a professional dancer and was preparing for a high-level dance competition which was aimed to draw excellent dancers from all over the country. It was a prestigious (负有盛名的) event, and Marie knew that if she wanted to make a name for herself in the world of ballet, this was her chance. She spent every waking moment practicing, determined to give it her all on the big day.
When the day of the competition arrived, Marie was nervous but excited. She had trained hard for this moment for years and felt confident in her well-prepared dancing. As she walked onto the stage, the bright lights blinded her momentarily, but she quickly regained her composure and began to dance.
The music swirled around her as she moved gracefully across the stage. Her movements were fluid and precise, each step perfectly executed. The audience watched in awe as Marie danced, completely lost in the moment.
But then, it happened. During a particularly difficult jump, Marie landed awkwardly on her ankle and felt a sharp pain shoot up her leg. She tried to ignore it and continue dancing, but the pain was too much. She fell to the floor, clutching her leg in agony.
Paramedics rushed onto the stage to tend to her, and Marie was taken to the hospital. The diagnosis was devastating: she had torn several ligaments (韧带) in her ankle and would need extensive surgery to repair the damage. Marie was held by desperate shock. She had worked so hard to get where she was, and now it seemed like all of her dreams were slipping away. For weeks, Marie was confined to a wheelchair, unable to move without assistance. She felt helpless and alone, wondering if she would ever be able to dance again.

As a sixth grader, I found it hard to fit in and make friends.
Our teacher had assigned (布置) “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and picked out one. By the middle of the week, everyone had turned this assignment into a competition to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package with a box of powder (胭脂粉). The girls sitting near me laughed at the gift I had received. What’s worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in. “How terrible,” I heard myself saying, “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn’t even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks (评论) and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normal like me to say mean (刻薄的) things like that about someone.
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face. She shouted at me with anger, “If you don’t want my gift, you can just leave it instead of laughing at it. This is the best powder from my mum!”
Hearing Janet’s words, I made up my mind to say sorry to her.

It was lunchtime, Jerry, David, Tom, and I went to the dining hall to have lunch. I glanced across the busy cafeteria and saw the new student, Jack. He was holding his plate and waiting in lines.
David noticed him too. “Why’s the new kid dressed like the headmaster?” he asked. Tom and Jimmy laughed.
“Jack’s cool. He’s in my English and history classes,” I said. However, I kept the truth that Jack and I had become friends when we worked on a project together. We discovered that we were both enthusiastic readers something I would never admit to Jerry, David, Tom.
I saw that Jack was walking toward us. “Don’t do it,” I thought, but in seconds he was at our table. My friends raised their eyebrows. Jerry, David, Tom piled their backpacks on the table and chairs so that there was no space left for another person to sit down. David said. “I don’t think we have room.”
This awkward situation froze the air. I could feel Jack looking at me, but I stared at my lunch as if it contained precious pearls of wisdom instead of rice and beans. After a long, uncomfortable pause, Jack left. I should have spoken up for him, but I couldn’t walk away from my three friends, could I?
Jack didn’t speak to me after that meeting. He was soon hanging around with another group of kids. A few months later, I saw an announcement about Jack being chosen to be president of the school book club. I was happy for Jack’s achievements, but I realized I had made a big mistake when I said nothing at the lunch table that day. Why was I so afraid that my friends might find out that I like to read?
As I stared at the announcement. I knew I needed to apologize to Jack — even if he did not want to become my friend again. I thought that my three friends would not agree. I also thought that I risked losing them as well. However, I knew that I would lose myself if I did nothing.

One warm, sunny morning, Marsha jumped right out of bed.
Today was the first day of summer vacation and also the last day she’d be spending with Tanya, her very best friend. Tanya was going to camp in another state. She’d be gone all summer. Marsha and Tanya always spent their summers together. This one would be no fun without her!
Marsha’s mom came in.“What’s the matter, Rabbit?” she said.
“I miss Tanya already. Isn’t that silly?” Marsha said.
“No,”her mother said softly.“Missing a best friend isn’t silly at all. ” Marsha’s eyes were wet.
“I know how you feel.”“You do?”asked Marsha. Marsha’s mom nodded.“I had a best friend when I was your age. And she went away to camp, too.”“I felt pretty sad,” Marsha’s mom said. “I wanted my best friend to think about me. So I gave her something.”“What?”asked Marsha.“I gave her my best necklace,” her mom said.
“You did?”asked Marsha.“Well,I wanted her to have it,” Marsha’s mom said,“Maybe you could give Tanya one of your favorite things to take to camp. How about a doll? Then she will never forget that you are her best friend.”Marsha wiped her eyes.“Mom, that’s a great idea!” she said.
“Are you going to give Tanya your Glenda Glitter doll?” said Marsha’s mom.“Yes, Mom,”she said.“This is the one I want her to have. But now I’m going to get Glenda all nice and clean. ” Soon, Glenda Glitter looked just like new.
Next it was time to dress the doll. Marsha ran to her room. In a flash she was back. Her hands were full of doll’s dresses. “This is the one I like best,” she said.“And I know Tanya likes it best, too.”
“Let’s see.I think I can fix this little rip(口子).” Marsha’s mom was good at fixing things. The doll dress soon looked good as new.
“Look, Mom!”she said. “Glenda looks beautiful.”
“You know, Kitten,”said Marsha’s mom, “Tanya will like this present so much.”“Tanya will be leaving soon,”she said.“We better hurry up.”Marsha and her mom walked over to Tanya’s house. They rang the bell.

Marty was new at school. Usually when you're the new kid, you lay low, but not Marty.
On his first day, he made a toothpick disappear. One second he was holding the toothpick, and the next second it was gone! Everyone was asking him how he did it. “It's magic! At my old school, they actually called me Magic Marty. " Marty said proudly. “Is he serious?" I whispered to my friend Brian. “I don't know, but that was pretty cool, "Brian said, still watching Marty. I knew Marty's magic was fake, but I just couldn't prove it.
Another time, Marty pulled a water bottle out of his bag, along with a cup and carefully poured water into it. Marty got a handful of ice cubes! Applause filled the hallway. When asked how he did it, he just smiled," Sorry, but that's the first law of magic. A magician never reveals his secrets. "
Well, he won't have to, I thought to myself. I'll reveal his secrets for him.
That night, at home, I sat at the kitchen table for almost an hour, trying to figure out the trick. " At it again, honey?” My mom watched me wiggle (摆动) my fingers hopelessly over a cup of water. "He's tricking people!" I cried. " Sounds as if he's trying to make friends. "My mom patted my arm.
Magic Marty had me stumped (把…难住), but the next day I caught a lucky break. At lunch, Marty was going on about how he could make things float. He had a ring in one hand and a pencil in the other. That's when I saw it: a thin piece of fishing line tied around the end of the pencil and attached to a button on Marty's shirt! Sure enough, he made the ring “float” by sliding it over the pencil and hanging it from the line. No one else noticed, and soon the whole cafeteria was clapping. However, I wasn't.

Fiona Famous was a very popular girl at school. She got on well with everyone. From an early age, she had made an effort to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party and from time to time she would give presents to everybody. She was such a busy girl that she hardly got a chance to spend time with individual friends. However, she felt very lucky; no other girl had so many friends.
But everything changed on National Friendship Day. On that day, at school, everyone was having a great time, drawing, painting and giving gifts. Everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. Fiona enjoyed the task of choosing three from all her friends.
However, when all the presents had been made and shared, Fiona was the only one who had not received a present! She felt terrible and spent hours crying. How could it be possible? So much effort to make so many friends and in the end no one saw her as their best friend. Everyone came and tried to calm her for a while. But each one only stayed for a while before leaving. This was what Fiona had done so many times to others.
When she got home, Fiona asked her mother where she could find true friends. “My dear,” answered her mother, “you cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words. If you really want true friends, you will have to give them real time and affection. For a true friend you must always be available in good times and bad ones.”
“But I want to be everybody’s friend! I need to share my time among everyone!” Fiona protested (声明).
“My dear,” said her mother, “you can’t be a close friend to everybody. There isn’t enough time to be available for everyone, so it’s only possible to have a few true friends. The others will be playmates, but they won’t be close friends.”

Robert and Henry were good friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school when Robert shouted at Henry and said ,“You are a coward(胆小鬼), and I won’t play with you.” Without any words, Henry was a little angry and went home alone.
The next day Henry went to school as usual, but Robert told all the boys that Henry was a coward and all of them laughed at Henry a great deal. Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he played with some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play.
A few days later, Robert was swimming with his new friends in a river, and he struggled in the water and suddenly cried “Help, help”. His new friends didn’t help him and ran away as fast as they could.
