Which book you should read is based on your next travel destination.
As you’re traveling around Amsterdam, read “he Fault in Our Stars”.
Previously adapted into a film in 2014, John Green’s story of star-crossed teenagers famously includes a trip to Amsterdam. The Anne Frank House and The Rijks Museum are two of many major destinations mentioned in the book. Plus, the bench from the film adaption of this novel has even become its own tourist spot.
“The Elegance of the Hedgehog” is excellent reading for a trip to Paris.
Before wandering down the Champs-Elysees, open Muriel Barbery’s novel for a delightful peek into the lives of wealthy Parisians. Set in an upscale French apartment building, the story follows two totally different people who discover they are kindred souls.
Bring “One Hundred Years of Solitude” to read in South America.
A significant work of literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic follows generations of the Buendia family as they live in their South-American town. Garcia Marquez’s magical realism paired with his lush descriptions makes the book a perfect read for visiting some of the breathtaking sights of South America.
“Call Me by Your Name” by Andre Aciman should perhaps be read in the summertime, in Italy.
Andre Aciman’s novel is said to take place in the Northern-Italian seaside region of Liguria. And if you’ve seen the 2017 coming-of-age film adaptation of the book, you’ll already know the story describes beautiful summers in Northern Italy, complete with seaside encounters and lush greenery.
If you’re visiting New York City, enter the mind of Holden Caulfield.
“The Catcher in the Rye” is a classic tale of a lost teenager’s unplanned trip to New York City. In the J. D Salinger’s novel, Holden visits a nightclub in the East Village, goes ice skating in Rockefeller Center, and takes his sister to the Central Park Zoo.

These writers are famous all over the world because their books have been translated into many different languages. In the UK, their novels are celebrated as some of the best that have ever been written. We say that these novels are “classic” because they are still read and enjoyed years after their publication.
I read classic novels not only because they are part of my university lessons but also because I enjoy them. They can teach you a lot about how people used to live and what society was like in the past. Novels like Hard Times by Charles Dickens remind us of the poverty in London during the Industrial Revolution while Jane Austen’s fiction shows us what family life was like in the 18th century.
Classic novels usually have memorable stories and interesting characters. One of my favourite books is Charles Dickens Great Expectations. It is about a boy called Pip who suddenly receives a lot of money from a mysterious supporter. As he grows up, his character changes: he becomes quite selfish and mean. Another important character is Miss Havisham. When she was young, her fiance ran away on their wedding day. She lives in a dark house and still wears her wedding dress. She is a fascinating character, both sad and scary.
Reading classic novels enriches my knowledge and life experience. And it has become part of life.

【推荐2】Jackie Kennedy once said, “There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” But experts disagree on how to inculcate (灌输) this love of books into our children’s worlds.
The Michigan Health Lab shares a study in favor of keeping company with your toddler (学步期儿童) and reading an old-fashioned print book. Researchers observed interactions of 72 parents reading to their toddlers. According to the study, parents of children aged two to three years old interacted more with their little ones when the bedtime story was a traditional book, which is averse to a Kindle or other digital book formats.
In their scholastic reports, researchers suggest that digital book sessions with little kids are often more about the technology and less about the book. Print book interactions by contrast, focus purely on the story! Plus young children love things they can hear, see and touch.
However, when it comes to your elementary-school-aged reader, keep print story time an option, but don’t worry about introducing an e-reader as well.
University of Akron’s Digital Text Initiative director, Jeremy Scott Brueck, tested this theory by giving his preschool students a book to read. He found about one third knew all the words in the story. He then reintroduced the story with an interactive digital reader. After students read the book again, 54% were able to recognize the words in the story. Not only that, but Brueck found that students were really engaged because of the e-reader’s interactive features.
For people of all ages, human connection tower over both print and digital media. Reading with your children of all ages and spending quality time with them is the best way to ensure they are not only “reading ready” but that they also develop social and emotional skills, and self confidence. Every child is unique, so parents can experiment to find the best way to bond with their children over books.
1. Why is Jackie Kennedy mentioned at the beginning of the text?A.To make comparisons. | B.To introduce the topic. |
C.To provide an example. | D.To support an argument. |
A.Similar. | B.Related. | C.Committed. | D.Opposite. |
A.Younger children love old-fashioned print books. |
B.Digital readers may be more exciting to older children. |
C.People can benefit from both digital and print books. |
D.Digital readers can develop children’s strong personality. |
A.To promote learning and bonding. | B.To keep them out of online games. |
C.To get them familiar with reading apps. | D.To help them gain a sense of achievement. |
【推荐3】Written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein, The Giving Tree is a children’s book that tells the story about a young boy and a tree in the forest. The story starts with the boy and the tree being the best of friends and having fun. As the boy grows older, he asks more from the tree, which willingly agrees until all that is left is a stump (树桩). In the end, the boy, now an old man, comes back to the tree and tells it that all he wants is a place to sit on, something that the tree eagerly provides.
In the book, each part of the story goes straight to the point without confusing readers. The book doesn’t include the events that happen to the boy in between. We see how the boy’s needs increase to a point that the tree finally gives its trunk as he grows. It makes the book easy to read and understand. The writing style may seem plain and boring at first but we need to keep in mind that it is a children’s book. If it weren’t that way, then it would be unattractive to its young readers.
The words used are very easy to understand. The phrase, “and the tree was happy”, is quite moved and shows the tree’s love for the boy. The use of the word “need” also shows readers the attitude of the boy. The change from “need” to “want” in the end also tells readers the changes that the boy goes through.
Though the book has been criticized as it can be understood in different ways, it is because of this that the book succeeds. Again the book is written for children. Different children have their own ways to understand the book and will consider it interesting.
1. What is the book mainly about?A.A boy’s great love for a tree. |
B.A boy’s relationship with a tree |
C.A boy’s dependence on a forest. |
D.A boy’s interesting life in a forest. |
A.Its story is touching. |
B.Its expressions are simple |
C.Its writing style is humorous. |
D.Its topics are varied. |
A.The comments kids gave. |
B.The writing style. |
C.The pictures in it. |
D.Different ways to understand it. |
A.To comment on a book. |
B.To introduce a writer. |
C.To recommend a story. |
D.To give readers a lesson. |
